Diablo 3 Necromancer Class Confirmed

Blizzard reveals a new character class during BlizzCon 2016.

Today during the BlizzCon 2016 opening ceremony, Blizzard confirmed earlier rumors and announced that a Necromancer class is coming to Diablo III next year.

Necromancer was a beloved class in Diablo II and Blizzard's Frank Pearce said on stage at BlizzCon that Diablo III's version will be inspired by the one from that version.

He also referred to the Necromancer as a "master of the dark arts" and a "badass battlefield general." Overall, it's a character class that "takes advantage of everything Diablo has to offer," Pearce said. Classic abilities like Corpse Explosion are coming back; this is used to summon an ally.

Diablo III's Necromancer class will go on sale in a character pack in 2017, alongside "other great features." People in attendance at BlizzCon can play the character right now.

For a closer look at Diablo III's Necromancer, check out the video above.

That Diablo III is getting a Necromancer class is not a complete surprise, as art discovered on Blizzard's website recently revealed let this slip.

They are also putting in the original Diablo into Diablo 3 at some point. Something about retro filter for the graphics. Sadly doesnt sound like they updated the movement at all. Diablo is still great, but man the walking is hard to go back to. Hopefully they do something to make it feel more modern.

It's nice to see the hordes of skeletons but it's a shame Diablo 3's leveling system stifles any creativity. Some people like making sub-optimum or novelty builds because it can be fun but Bliz was like "Screw that, let's make Diablo for babbies who don't want to assign skill points"

@catsimboy: No creativity? In Diablo III you've got a bunch of different powers with a bunch of different modes, and a bunch of different utilities to pick from. And you can have access to all of them and switch them around whenever.

Diablo II had a bunch of skills too, but there were a ton of pretty useless ones and you couldn't try out different builds because you just got one respec per run. Plus you had to put points in skills you didn't want to get to the ones you did.

I don't see how Diablo III made the leveling system anything but better.

@catsimboy: Why are you defending the skill tree from D2? There were SO MANY USELESS skills!

@catsimboy: here's how skill points worked in D2:

Step 1: determine the skull path for your character prior to making hem and dedicate all skill points to only those skills, allowing you to use no other skills.

And for stat points:

Step 1: calculate the minimum required stat for dex/int/str to wear the optimum gear for that build.

Step 2: dump the rest in vitality.

Anything else yields your so called "sub optimum" build.

Interestingly enough, D3 is rife with sub-optimal builds that many people enjoy using, and doesn't require using a j2sp service to buy gear from farmers.

Glad we had this talk.

I never played D2. Is the necromancer all that different from the witch doctor? The WD had all sorts of undead summons and powerful death-related spells. Is the necromancer really all that different?

@Barighm: Yes and no. Both the Witch Doctor and the Necromancer have something to do with dead allies, however, the Necromancer is slightly more tanky (he had a skull shield skill) and offensive-like, while the Witch Doctor is more about poisoning and controlling enemies.

In short, the Necromancer needs to kill enemies and revive them to gain allies, or making them explode, while the Witch Doctor is more toward the path of mob control (confusing enemies converting them to his side, poisoning them, ETC).

It'll be kinda hard to make them both different enough, since both of them are somewhat similar, but knowing that Blizzard is skilled at that sort of thing, I am not worried.

LOL the first word he said in the video, it sounded like the voice of Death in Darksiders. And he said "death". And then "the balance bla bla", like in Darksiders. Is this on purpose? Because it's almost exactly identical.. Same blue-green color, scythes, skeletons summoning, soul absorption, tomb, spikes out of the ground, boney armor.

Yes, some of those concepts were in the D2 (diablo 2 but can also stand for Darksider 2!!) necro, but still. This is almost plagiarism.

If memory serves me well, most things about the necro in diablo 2 were just blue, not blue-green.

I guess I gotta re-download D3 for the 15th time, because necro was my favorite class in d2!

Nifty! I burnt out on D3, but by the time this comes out, I could see myself wanting to jump back in.

Plus, I always liked the Necromancer.

Wow Necromancer........ i am speechless i always wanted that or something.

If you are a multiplayer esports nut, then this Blizzcon was epic, if you are a fan of the more old school single player blizzard , then you just got a huge big F U from blizzard.

Disappointed they did not do something special for their 25year anniversary

Already played D3 to much to get too excited about this. Was hoping for D4, D2 remaster or at least a D3 expansion pack.

@mvilleguy88: You didn't already play Diablo 2 too much to get excited if they'd announced a remaster?

@Richardthe3rd: I think when person say better they a referring to the darker tone graphics D2 has... because i can't see how that system beats the current d3 system
