Bungie announced at Gamescom 2014 that it currently has two expansions for Destiny in the works, each of which will introduce new competitive and cooperative adventures, as well as new weapons, armor, and player gear. The first of these expansions, titled The Dark Below will launch in December and introduce "its own story," Bungie has said.

"We call it an expansion because it has one of all the activity types from Destiny, so it's story, strike and beyond—and competitive and cooperative experiences in there," Bungie Director of Production Jonty Barnes told Joystiq in an interview. "As well as new gear, new armor, new weapons and everything else."

Barnes said that at least some of the new story content will take you through different parts of areas included in the main game, so you'll still run into players who don't have the expansion. "We always want to create spaces where people can get together and cooperate, and we feel like that is a big innovation in Destiny," he said.

Bungie also released a trailer (above) showing off gameplay from the game's Mars location.

Publisher Activision recently revealed that Destiny is the most preordered new IP in GameStop's history. It launches September 9 for PlayStation 3, PlayStation 4, Xbox 360, and Xbox One.

"Reuses some areas" <--- HahahahoHohoHOha. Quick everyone go buy an expansion pack pass! Oh this August article is even funnier now after release. Not sure if I'm mentally stable laughing hysterically at the death of my hobby's industry. I wonder if they'll at least color the mobs differently for your ExPaNsIoN pack through already explored areas? Have fun with your blue/red/green/azure/rouge/platinum slime updates!

maybe I should just not buy this game at launch. it usually is down to $40 after a few months and the DLCs usually get a lot cheaper too after they skim the early adopters.

<< LINK REMOVED >> You'll probably want to wait until after Christmas for that. I doubt Activision will drop the MSRP with the holiday shopping season coming up. If they are below their sales projections, they MIGHT throw retailers a bone and give a Black Friday or holiday "sale" price of $45-$50, which would magically become the new retail price right after New Year's (I'm looking at YOU CoD franchise).

Well we'll see how the whole game does first, if I put down money for it and it sucks then this DLC won't be bothering me. If I like it, I'll put down money for this DLC and the second one as well, if it gives me hours of gameplay.

I work hard, I play hard. If it's worth my money, I'll pay the bleeding money to enjoy a good solid few hours of gaming, before I go to my monotonous job and life.

Games are an escape, they're not free.

Games I avoid like the bleeding plague this year will be Advanced Warfare, and maybe Battlefield: Hardline, nothing new there and not worth paying for.

<< LINK REMOVED >> DLC announced, talked and made before the game has even come out. WoW expansions came out much later after release. I cant stand it when developers / publishers do this. Give us the FULL game first, let us all play it for a long time, THEN make DLC / expansion packs.

Its basically saying, You buy the game, but it wont be complete until you buy this this and that and that. This S**t needs to stop.

<< LINK REMOVED >><< LINK REMOVED >> You do know that a lot of DLC is planned before hand right? Like for a lot of games, at release will have the first DLC almost done..... This counts for almost all the games that you play, and all of the games that have a yearly release!

<< LINK REMOVED >> You seem to think that WoW expansions started development after the main game. Untrue. The initial expansions were being developed (at least in storyline stage) while the main game was as well and expansions 1 and 2 were released within a year of each other. It's not like WD's exclusives which came out like 2 weeks after release, which I agree is ridiculous. This is 3 months after release. If you can't level up completely after 3 months then that's on you. You could probably level up all 3 characters. The existence of DLC was announced when the game itself was announced. We all knew that rather than having imminent sequels that there would be expansion packs. Whether those expansions affect the original gameplay (replacing story rather than adding non-essential story) remains to be seen but its ludicrous to think that just b/c DLC is being released 3 months after launch that it's adding cut out content. Activision might be publishing the game, but remember that Bungie is developing the series. Activision has given Bungie a rather large leeway in which to do as well. In an age where there are multiple games coming out each month, there has to be a reason to stick with a franchise. It's not like it was a decade ago when WoW didn't have to compete with anything. $30-$35 for 2 expansions isn't bad. It adds weapons, other items, and storyline, which, again probably isn't absolutely essential. I'd be far more weary if this game was coming out of EA or even Ubisoft studios, but its not.

Nothing pisses me off more than hearing about DLC before the game is even released. If the game isn't gold yet, then you're just leaving out content. DLC isn't "extra" content until there's something to be in addition to. DLC should be something that comes out six months after the game, to reignite your interest in the game. I don't care how good the studio is or how good their reputation is among gamers etc.. dlc announced before a game's release is nothing but a cash grab tactic and it's KILLING a lot of the excitement in this entertainment market.

DLC's like this are ruining console gaming. They should be part of the game. You reap what you sow.

Alternatively, they could distribute the game entirely digitally but at a reduced priced....

There should be an organized boycott of all DLC's like this.

The hate for having DLC announced before the release is strong in these comments. As long as DLCs provide a lot of great content for the money I will buy them. I am also glad that companies have the foresight to split their team and develop DLC with one team and finish the main game with the other so that the DLC would be ready a few months after release. If the game is great I wont want to wait half a year for more content.

I don't think DLCs are always "just a cash grab." We should probably spare the moaning until the DLC is release and we see if it's a Shivering Isles or a Horse Armor first. For now I'll give them the benefit of the doubt and believe that their announcing the content is a way of showing that they'll continue to support the game and add great content at a steady pace after launch.

<< LINK REMOVED >> Devs don't need to support a game with dlc in the future if they put it in the game right away. Actually that's what they've always been doing. Before dlc there were expansion packs, which usually offered tons of new content.

<< LINK REMOVED >><< LINK REMOVED >> The big deal is that this expansion is coming so fast after the release of the game and they are talking about it before the game is even out. If it was out and they announced it 2 or 3 months after release then it would be fine. The $60 kinda loses it value as you spend your money on a partly incomplete game. There is no way that this could have not been in the full release of the game. It's just Activision and/or Bungie just making you pay more money on a game then you should have to. DLC's are not bad if used correctly.

I feel like the closer this game comes to release, the less I'm looking forward to it. I always get so amped up for games releases, and 9/10 times I'm disappointed with the end product.

As for the expansion packs, it's disappointing to hear that they will be recycling existing areas. A DLC should be all new! Don't recycle, and resell me the game that I already bought, if I'm gonna buy your "new content" I expect new content!

@themc_7 It s not really clear but it look like you ll sometime have to go through some of the existing area to go to the new dlc one ( they need people to be around for the random events after all ).So at least a part of each of those mission will have unseen area which is fine by me .

Announcing incoming DLC's is the only way to stay relevant and fresh in a market flooded with "AAA" sequels every year. I don't want Destiny 2, I want more guns, missions and stuff. Keep telling me more about the new content you're already planing on adding, haven't been this excited for a new title in years.

To the clueless haters, keep ranting and crying, this game is going to have everyone eating their humble pie come December when it's crowned the next WoW/Halo/Your Life, embrace it.

@aniruddh22 in all honesty I had more fun playing the destiny beta than I did playing any of the halo games. so I would say it not only compares with halo, but it is actually better than halo. It plays similar in some ways, but much more modern and innovated. bungie have done a fantastic job.

@Gravity_Slave So basically you played for 30 minutes ( not even trying a strike or pvp ) and then think you experienced the game enough to say we are stupid to think it s great ?

The only thing that i m amazed about is that you took the time to write something about a game you don t give a %$*% about from the moment you got inand that you think it s alright to judge people after experiencing pretty much nothing from the game .

If a game can't keep me engaged long enough (I played for 2 1/2 hours) to see the other stuff you're talking about than it can't be very good from the start can it?

I bet if I wiggled a set of shiny keys in front of you, that would give you the same enjoyment as a session with Destiny. I don't know what's worse...Destiny or the small army of twits waving it's flag.

They work on dlc and it's not only one i bet , and it's before game get's launched , I bet that dlc and one that comes after 1-2 month maximum will contain better gear than overall game, well sorry ppl but you deserve this coz you jumped on hype train and gave em those ideas. Activision knows that brainwashed ppl will buy those dlc's anyway so they will butcher , cut off any content and sell it for 20$ minimum.

I bet if Bungie had just kept quiet about the upcoming new content for December and beyond until say, November, nobody would even be making these idiotic complaints.

Even if they were producing it under the exact same method they are doing right now IE having people who don't work on QA/balance, working on the new content instead of going on leave or even being layed off.

Whatever... I got my PS4 white bundle at a great price, and with Gamestop's 2 year warranty I can body-slam my console in 23 months and get a $450 voucher to the new bundle that's out, plus a few new games whatever they may be come 2016 since the PS4 price is likely to drop by then.

Power to the gamers.... Right GS?

WTH! All it's adding is extra missions to the existing game. Major bummer!

@Jag-T1000 To play devils advocate (though I am also worried), they did not say that it will ONLY use existing areas. For that matter it doesn't specify whether they won't be new sections within the old areas, just that it will be set within old areas.

To quote "at least some of the new story content will take you through different parts of areas included in the main game"

It definitively states "different parts" of areas included in the main game. What this will mean in practice is as of yet unknown.

/devilsadvocateoff

Yeah I'm pretty worried about it, but the wording does leave room for them to not disappoint us. I hope.

I hope this makes people re-think their pre-order. The "value" that this game will deliver is the biggest thing in question...if you aren't at least a tad bit concerned, you may need an accountant.
