Bungie has announced two new multiplayer modes coming to Destiny through the Taken King expansion. Design lead Lars Bakken revealed the new modes in an interview with Game Informer.

The first is called "Rift," and it comes to Destiny as a result of fans calling on Bungie to release a new objective-style mode. A twist on the traditional capture-the-flag mode, Rift is closer to neutral bomb assault.

When matches begin, an object called the Spark is placed at the center of the map. The goal is to carry the Spark to your opponent's base to score--but that's where the similarities to CTF end. First, you will earn rewards even if you don't reach the base, and second, you must deliver the Spark within a set period of time. If you fail to do so, the Spark will blow up and kill you.

Bakken said traditional CTF modes featured in other games can be too "binary" and "punitive." Rift will be a 6v6 mode.

The other new Destiny Crucible mode is "Mayhem." In this mode, you're basically a superhero. Your grenades, ammo, Super ability, and melee moves recharge "very fast." Bakken said Mayhem was designed to feel more like a "party game" that he hopes people will play to blow off steam instead of taking too seriously.

Mayhem may not be around forever, however, as Bakken said Bungie plans to deploy the mode with the intention of gathering feedback from fans. "We're gonna put it out there, we're gonna see what people think," he said.

In addition, Bakken said Bungie plans to introduce a permanent playlist for Elimination, the 3v3 hardcore mode from Trials of Osiris. Previously, this was playable only during the limited window when Trials of Osiris is available.

"I think players told us pretty quickly with Trials when we gave them Elimination as a rotating mode, the first posts that were popping up were, 'Oh my God, just make it permanent, you a**holes!' 'Just do it; we want to play it all the time.' So that's what we're going to try," Bakken said.

The Taken King launches on September 15 for all platforms. The expansion is set to make major changes to the overall Destiny experience. These changes and more will be chronicled in a weekly Twitch video series that begins tomorrow, August 19, and continues through the expansion's launch.
