Destiny development unaffected by Halo composer's firing

While he may be gone from Bungie, Marty O'Donnell's music will still be featured in its next game.

Any concerns fans may have about Destiny after Bungie fired composer Marty O'Donnell can be put to rest, as O'Donnell's departure will not have an effect on the game's release later this year, according to the developer's chief operating officer.

Describing Destiny as being "close to shipping," Bungie COO Pete Parsons told Eurogamer that O'Donnell's music remains in the game despite his recent firing. "I think the Bungie fanbase is going to look forward to hearing Marty's music, Mike Salvatori's music, C. Paul's music and Paul McCartney's music in the game," Parsons said. "That's going to be exciting for people. It's going to be a great, fantastic experience."

O'Donnell, who served as Bungie's audio director, recently announced he had been fired "without cause" by Bungie, although the details surrounding the situation have not yet been made public. Prior to working on Destiny, O'Donnell, along with Salvatori and C. Paul Johnson, worked on the soundtracks for the Halo series before it was handed off to 343 Industries. Paul McCartney, meanwhile, has been working with Bungie to write music for Destiny over the past few years.

Curiously, in a recent interview with DBO (via Superannuation), O'Donnell indicated he still has an ownership stake in Bungie despite his dismissal. The composer has yet to reveal what's next for him, but he did indicate that moving from games to films is a possibility. "I've never done a feature film, but I've worked on film scores, I've done commercials, I've done video games... if Spielberg called, I wouldn't say no," he said.

Parsons went on to say of Destiny, "There's a lot of polish left to do, lots of tweaking and tuning, but a lot is already complete."

The new first-person shooter remains on track for release this September on PlayStation 4, Xbox One, PlayStation 3, and Xbox 360.

Based on the fact that they left on good terms (although specifics are undisclosed) I would think saying he was "terminated" is a much better way to put it than FIRED.

Every single character in this game I've seen so far look like Quarians.

My bro is excited for this game, and granted im interested but I hate, heck detest, MMO's so if this can limit the MMO aspect I may have to get it. With it being released on PC too, probably not at launch, ill get it. The story looks good and I would definitely want to experience it.

Oh and Activision said that Bungie needs to cut costs. That way Activision makes more money too.

They fired MARTY!?! Are you f***ing kidding me? Who the hell made that decision?

From what I've heard of Destiny's soundtrack in the trailers so far, he's still as good as he was 10 years ago. Why the hell would they fire him?

@Aryck1095 I would assume he did something that went against company views via twitter or facebook on accident that they took harshly.

Unless Marty did something stupid, the only reason I can think of for his firing is that his salary was too high compared to the other talented composers at Bungie and in the industry in general, and Bungie wanted to cut costs.

A composer as awesome as Marty doesn't get fired "without cause", as he claims.

I liked Marty's music on Halo but the music in Halo 4 was fantastic too.

Go ahead 343! It's your time to do some human resources work now.

Why would his firing affect development? I understand he is great but music is arguably the least important part of the development process.

He shouldn't have any trouble finding work, his work with Bungie has been phenomenal.

Visceral should hire him for their Star Wars project just as they picked up Amy Hennig.

Please let him head to 343. He's probably the best composer in the gaming business.

Unfortunately the farther the series has gone the harder it is for me to recall songs because they always feel more like idle background hum. Halo 4 wasn't by Marty but it didn't have anything except that hum.

I don't know them or their work so I can't say yes or know. If they were the ones that composed the Chrono Trigger or Ocarina of Time games then I'd say no.

As folks have pointed out we don't have any factual information as to why Marty was fired. BUT this action and the fact that Bungie isn't really addressing it leaves me with that sense of uneasiness.

Bungie really should get in front of this and stake their position. I know that many folks don't give a s$#@ about this but it leaves me wondering about the type of company they may be turning into. This almost seems like the kind if thing that EA or Activision corporate would do.

Perhaps Sir Paul McCartney requested Marty be dismissed from his employment.

Honestly though, to fire someone who has been with a company for so many years just seems so cold. We don't know the reason for the firing, but it stills seems crazy considering how much O'Donnell's music contributed to the games Bungie made.
