Destiny 2 is getting updated to take advantage of the power of the Xbox One X and PlayStation 4 Pro, developer Bungie announced today. Bungie will update both games to support the new consoles on December 5, which is the day that Destiny 2's Curse of Osiris expansion launches. December 5 is also the start-date of Destiny 2 Season Two.

Bungie's blog post announcing the updates does not go into a lot of detail about what players can expect in terms of upgrades or enhancements on Xbox One X and PS4 Pro, only to say you'll see "stunning gameplay with high dynamic range lighting." Additionally, there will be "adaptive 4K resolution" on PS4 Pro and regular 4K on Xbox One X.

"If you're migrating to these new consoles, or already have, we'll make it worth your investment," Bungie said.

The Xbox One X was released earlier this week, on November 7, while the PlayStation 4 Pro has been available since November 2016. Microsoft bills the Xbox One X as the most powerful console ever made; it is reportedly 40 percent more powerful than any other system on the market.

Given that the Xbox One X and PS4 Pro are significantly more expensive than the standard models, they will likely have a smaller install base, at least right away. Some games play and perform better without patches but dedicated patches typically take things further. We'll report back with more details on Destiny 2's Xbox One X and PS4 Pro patches as details come to light.

NO FPS in 2017 should be locked at 30fps! Destiny is the ONLY FPS/game this gen that mandates 30fps. The xbox one X is more than capable to run this game at 60 with a dynamic res.

@nativepixel: Did you not hear? The Xbox One base model is locked to 30fps? The base model is so weak there's no way it will run 1080p/60. The Xbox One X owners that play online can't be at 60fps while the majority are at 30fps. Why is this so complicated for you guys!!??

Avatar image for sladakrobot

@khanwashere: that opens the question why Bungie didnt made the game with 60 fps in mind for the base consoles

Rather have 60fps, MS put themselves in quite the predicament with "4K" Machine Now devs feel the need to force that instead of 60FPS. I prefer what Rise of the Tomb Raider and Gears of War 4 has....options. 60fps EVERY SINGLE GOD DAMN TIME

@chiefwiggum16: They already told that its up to the Devs what they are gonna focus on, perfomance or visuals. They are not forcing anyone to put the games on true 4K. Not even Halo 5 patch gave up on perfomance to achieve the true 4K, the game still has the dynamic resolution on Xbox One X locked on 60fps

Avatar image for sladakrobot

@25kim25: Halo 5 on XbX uses dynamic resolution but if i recall it correctly, most of the time Halo 5 runs at 4k/60fps according to DF

@sladakrobot: My point is, if even the strongest microsoft exclusive focus on perfomance over pure resolution, why would they force other devs to put their games on true 4k over an locked 60fps?

And I know Halo 5 reaches full 4k most of the time, but thats not the point of my argument

@chiefwiggum16: The reality of online play at the same framerate seems to consistently be lost on people. No game console will run a game at 60fps when the same exact community has a lesser console of the same gen running at 30fps. YOU CANNOT MIX AND MATCH FRAME-RATES ONLINE WITH XBOX ONE S AND X.

Blame the Xbox One S for that problem.

@chiefwiggum16: I'll be mostly playing this for the campaign and maybe the Raids(PVE), and for that I am fine with locked 30 fps - 4K. I agree it would be nice to have 60 fps, but for PVE it's less important to me. For PVP though it's more important to me and with games like Halo 5 and Gears 4 are 60 fps online pvp so at least I have that. But yeah it would be nice for PVP fans of Destiny 2 if they could get a 60 fps mode if possible.

This didn't already support PS4 Pro? (Edit: yes with 4k, but no HDR) Developers still treating mid gen consoles like an afterthought

This is what you can expect X1X owners, enhancement patches that lag behind

@girlusocrazy: Lag behind? Everything is all good and on time with the x enhancements chill.

Avatar image for girlusocrazy

@nativepixel: Yeah I'm talking about for the PS4 Pro, the patches at first were coming fast and then it slowed to a trickle as the incentive to do them wore off. Same thing will probably happen to X1X unless it manages to grab a huge chunk of the market to make it worthwhile for developers.

Finally, every x enhanced game ive checked out these last two days have been remarkable. Destiny 2 should be no exception. The whiny kids demanding their precious 60fps need to just stick with pc and shut their mouths already. Games have survived without 60fps for decades without complaints.

Avatar image for Alucard_Prime

@khanwashere: yeah I'm quite pleased with the upgrade, that is the bottom line is that it's a big upgrade from the base XOne, and many games I have played so far have 60 fps options. I'm fine with 4K though, I prefer to stick with that in Gears PVE and for pvp it is 60 fps so that's great for me.

Avatar image for khanwashere
KhanWasHere

@Alucard_Prime: It's true, a lot of games are 60fps whether it's in a 4K mode or 1080p. Cod WWII is fantastic. Without directly a/b comparing it to my PC version at 4K I would easily think it was the PC version.

Avatar image for chiefwiggum16

@khanwashere: 60fps over 4k any day, Gears 4 1080p 60fps looks ten times better than Gears 4 at 4K 30fps

Avatar image for khanwashere
KhanWasHere

@chiefwiggum16: The added smoothness of 60fps is nice, no one can argue that but damn, it looks awful at 1080p on my 4K OLED display. I played it last night in that mode and decided, f^ck that I want my clear graphics back. It still looked generationaly leaps ahead of the base Xbox One though. I can handle the beauty of 4k just fine at 30fps. Seriously, until gaming consoles reach a point no con-game true definitive 4k/60 for everything, PC is the place to be for that. I bet the followup generation of consoles in a few years will finally get us there. I can't take anyone serious when they expect more from a $500 console than what a typical $1000 PC provides. It's a freaking miracle of science that the Xbox One X does what it does already. If all X games provided 1080p/60 and 2160p/30 I bet everyone would be happy.

Kick it up to 60fps and just let all the poor ass kids’ heads spin with anger and frustration in multiplayer. Quality and performance is what it should be. However quality and tolerance is what we’re getting.

Avatar image for Lord_Sesshy

The game already looks good enough. I'd rather have 60fps.

Avatar image for twztid13
twztid13

@Lord_Sesshy: then the original consoles would be at a disadvantage, so they'd have to segment the user base if they wanted some to be on 60fps & still support the original consoles which are only capable of half that at best.

Avatar image for chiefwiggum16
chiefwiggum16

@twztid13: Not my fucking problem, what do you think pc has? Some people running at 720p and some at 4k. Who do you think has the advantage?

Avatar image for Lord_Sesshy
Lord_Sesshy

@twztid13: Not all PCs run the game 60fps though. So why don't they limit that to 30fps for the people that can't get 60.

Avatar image for darkelf83
darkelf83

@Lord_Sesshy: It's understood and accepted that PC is the open platform. Consoles have been a locked box since the start and consumers like it that way. PC also comes with choices where as consoles usually do not. To a point parts of this are slowly changing but this is can of worms and is better left alone.

Avatar image for nativepixel

@twztid13: you think every PC is running this game at a locked 60 fps? This excuse is ignorant at best.

Avatar image for restatbonfire

I do not care for 4K, I want 60fps for every game I play. Took a break from D2 would gladly return just to play in 60fps

Avatar image for xcrimsonxsynx
XCrimsonxSynX

@restatbonfire: Its not that simple. Most console versions of games have a locked frame rate. It would take serious time and money to rework a game to open its frame rate.

Avatar image for restatbonfire
RestatBonfire

@xcrimsonxsynx: that’s what the xb1x is for?

Avatar image for chiefwiggum16
chiefwiggum16

@restatbonfire: Sometimes you can have both, 4k 60 is freaking beautiful on the xb1x. Problem is it's just not powerful enough to push that on every game. Base line should be 60fps and dynamic scaling.

Avatar image for girlusocrazy
GirlUSoCrazy

@restatbonfire: Just turn on video smoothing on your TV. Boom, 120fps

Avatar image for chiefwiggum16
chiefwiggum16

@girlusocrazy: That's what I do, but the input lag is real bad. I have no issues with some games but shooters I just can't do. That's why I love the patches with 60fps, Gears 4 and Rise of the Tomb Raider.

Avatar image for girlusocrazy
GirlUSoCrazy

@chiefwiggum16: Yeah I agree. I was half joking because of the lag issue but I actually do this too for some games, such as Zelda, where I don't notice the lag at all. Native would obviously be better!

Avatar image for PSYCHOV3N0M

@restatbonfire: 60fps is the primary reason I haven't purchased Destiny 2 (my personal friends want me to join them like I did in D1) aside from the game being a never-ending repetitive grindfest.

IF I ever buy D2, it'll be when I've built my PC rig in 2018. 4K ULTRA/60fps is the goal.

Avatar image for games2525

@PSYCHOV3N0M: ok but how many people have a 1080ti to reach that goal?i ve personally built a gaming pc and athough its way more powerfull than my ps pro i am tired of all the poor ports.yesterday i was trying to fix wolfenstein 2 from repeatedly crashing and tearing, and im playing it 4k/60fps.now i would rather buy it on my pro to avoid these problems...

Avatar image for Attitude2000

@games2525: Tell me about it. Started dabbling with Gears of War 4 and forgot the campaign is 30 fps. Went to start it on my PC...the latest update broke it. 😕

Destiny 2 already has PS4 Pro support?

Avatar image for darkelf83
darkelf83

@TheAlmightyCow: Ya, I do not understand what this is about. According to Digital Foundry, PS4 Pro already uses a checkerboard technique to render at 4k with some dynamic horizontal scaling. Though stress tests did not reveal any drops.

The Bungie page says the update is for "high dynamic range (HDR) lighting" and "You’ll also see adaptive 4K resolution on the PlayStation 4 Pro and 4K on the Xbox One X."

My guess is they may have made a change to the dynamic scaling on Pro to work with the new lighting, not sure if this only works if you have HDR or not. Also noticed they avoid using the term "native" when referring to the X. Have to wait for DF to get a hold of the DLC and test it out.

Avatar image for xcrimsonxsynx
XCrimsonxSynX

@darkelf83: You left out of your qoutes "...regular* 4K on Xbox One X." Its safe to say thats straight 4K, not "adaptive."

Avatar image for darkelf83
darkelf83

@xcrimsonxsynx: My quote is from the Bungie website and they do not use the work "regular" in reference to the 4k on X. https://www.bungie.net/en/News/Article/46467

GameSpot is the one who used the word regular. For all we know it could still be non native 4k but never dip. In which case it wouldn't be adaptive and hence the distinction.
