The upcoming Destiny sequel has been "rebooted," according to a report from Kotaku. Additionally, the site claims there was a staff reorganization and The Taken King director Luke Smith is now leading development on Destiny 2.

This information was mentioned in a new report about Destiny's rumored Rise of Iron expansion. A poster for this expansion recently popped up on Reddit and was verified by two sources at Kotaku. The add-on will reportedly be announced at E3 and released in September.

"From what we hear, Destiny 2 was recently rebooted, with Taken King director Luke Smith taking the reins of that project in the wake of a Bungie staff reorganization," Kotaku reported.

The nature and extent of the reported reboot was not detailed.

Destiny 2 was officially announced in February as part of the Activision Blizzard earnings report. There is basically nothing to go on yet about this game, as all Activision has said is that it's a "full game sequel" that's due out in 2017.

Fans won't have to wait that long for more new Destiny content, however, as the new expansion referenced above is due out later this year. All Activision has officially said is that this year's expansion is a "large new" one. This suggests it could be on par with The Taken King, rather than the smaller The Dark Below or House of Wolves DLC releases.

According to Kotaku's sources, the Rise of Iron expansion will add a new raid that is thought to be themed around the Fallen. The raid is "based loosely" on a raid that was cut out of 2015's House of Wolves, sources said. Overall, the expansion is rumored to be "larger" than The Dark Below and House of Wolves.

Destiny has three expansions thus far: The Dark Below, House of Wolves, and The Taken King. More recently, the game celebrated hitting 30 million registered players.
