Destiny 2 Offers Free PS5 And Xbox Series X Upgrades

Buying the Destiny 2: Beyond Light expansion will get you access to it on PlayStation 5 or Xbox Series X, depending on your current platform.

Destiny 2 is officially coming to both PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X, and players won't have to pay to make the transition to next-generation consoles. Bungie shared the news as part of its reveal event for Season 11 and the future of the game, and although details remain scant, we do have the outline of how it plans to handle next-gen.

Destiny 2 will launch on both PS5 and Xbox Series X, and expansion content you own--including the upcoming Beyond Light--will carry over to next-gen systems. Bungie says that Beyond Light supports Smart Delivery, so buying it on Xbox One will get you access on Series X. Similarly, although Sony has not announced an official Smart Delivery-style service, a Beyond Light purchase on PS4 will get you it on PS5.

Now Playing: Destiny 2 Coming To PS5 & Series X With Free Upgrade | Save State

This setup does raise at least one big question, as it doesn't sound as if you'll be able to upgrade to the PS5 version for free if you buy Beyond Light on Xbox One, or to Xbox Series X from PS4. Cross-save should mean you can make the transition without issue, providing you're willing to pay.

In terms of what to expect, Destiny 2 on PS5 and Xbox Series X will run at 4K and 60 FPS. Cross-play will be available within a console family (so PS4 and PS5 players can play together, while Xbox One and Xbox Series X players can do so). Any expansion content you own now or in the future will go with you into the future.

Bungie says more details will be shared in the coming months, so we shouldn't necessarily expect clear answers on everything just yet. With PS5 and Xbox Series X still lacking release dates, we don't yet know when exactly we'll be playing Destiny 2 on next-gen.

The stream was not the first reference to Destiny 2 on next gen. It was expected to launch on the new consoles, and Bungie previously said it would be playable on them, although that could have simply been through backwards compatibility. This latest news makes it clear Destiny 2 will be a native PS5 and Xbox Series X game.

Not to be funny (or a butthole) but Destiny 2 is already free to play........you only have to pay for DLC. Is this article saying that DLC will transfer over? Because if not, it seems like clickbait to me.

I own it for Xbox One but haven’t tried it yet, and was momentarily marginally excited I’d get to try the upgraded version, only this explicitly sounds like you DO have to pay, namely by buying an expansion (and then I guess get the rest of it for the new system too?). Oh well, I’ll have to “make do” with “only” the Xbox One version lol

Was really hoping to finally see true cross play from the new updates. One X to Series X is not what I consider cross play. I never anticipated we couldn't play across the same brands.
