Destiny 2 Not Launching September 2016, Report Says

Higher-ups at Bungie have pushed a full sequel to the sci-fi shooter.

Although Destiny 2 was forecasted to launch in September 2016, it will no longer meet this window and will be released later than initially expected, a report has claimed.

While the sequel has not been officially confirmed by developer Bungie or publisher Activision, court documents published in September 2015 laid out the roadmap for the sci-fi shooter franchise.

The release schedule indicated a new entry in the series would be launched in September 2016, but this is no longer the case according to a report from Kotaku. Citing sources "familiar with goings-on at the studio," the site reports "plans for Destiny's future are constantly in flux" and "just last week higher-ups at Bungie delayed Destiny 2 out of this September."

It is worth noting that original release schedule in the documents were based on the first Destiny launching in 2013, which it did not. The title was delayed and instead launched in 2014 in order to accommodate "substantial revisions" to the story.

Bungie and Activision intended to release new, disc-based sequels every other year until 2019, with large downloadable expansions in between. It is not clear if plans were amended in light of the delay, but the release of The Taken King in 2015 suggested a full sequel would follow in 2016.

In November 2014, Activision Publishing CEO Eric Hirshberg revealed that development has started on the next "full game" in the Destiny series.

"Work has also begun on future expansion packs, as well as on our next full game release," he said at the time.

As of August 2015, Destiny has accumulated over 20 million registered players, who have clocked 20 billion hours in the game.

In December 2015, Bungie community manager Eric Osborne addressed concerns there "won't be any more substantial content until [the studio ships] another full game, or that all of the content for the rest of Year Two will come in the form of timed events."

According to Osborne the studio has a whiteboard full of "developments planned for Destiny's not-so-distant future," including new "events, activities, content, and features."

"The first of these early 2016 experiences will be on a scale close to Festival of the Lost," he said. "The second will be far larger than anything you've seen since the release of The Taken King. There's also another significant update to the world and sandbox planned in this same window."

The experience "on a scale close to Festival of the Lost" mentioned above is the Valentine's Day in-game event, called "Crimson Days." The event begins on February 9 and runs for one week. As part of this, Destiny's social space, the Tower, is getting a visual overhaul themed around the color red. The Crucible mode, meanwhile, will have a new 2v2 variant called Crimson Doubles.

Bungie, I'll make it easy for you. Do you know what you need for Destiny 2 to be successful? A war. Not of countries or ideologies or even games. You need a war IN Destiny. When I played Planetside 2, I FELT like I was in a war. Maybe it was brevited of some things, but when you hopped into a Prowler column and rolled over a hill to the next base, you FELT like a tank commander. When you were in a Reaver or a Scythe, doing recon on enemy forces, that's what it felt like.

Destiny 1, sold itself on this epic story of being in a war against "The Darkness"(And FFS, PICK A NON-GENERIC NAME NEXT TIME My god, the four INDIVIDUAL races that comprise The Darkness, have better names!!) But wars aren't fought in repeatable instances, that do the same thing over and over again. Going by the success rates of Guardians against the NPCs, I'm wondering why The Darkness was even a threat to EARTH let alone to The Traveler(AGAIN, FIX THAT NAME!) They're not fought in pointless PvP matches. Make people FEEL like they're champions of humanity, in a last ditch fight against The Darkness, not like the 3rd Street Saints on a Solar-System spanning power trip, ridin in their highly customizable lo-lo ships that do nothing but fill a loading screen, and commenting on how much they had to farm to get a shader for their armor.

@Khasym: I like what you said but I also think a lot of people really enjoy that repeating instanced farming grinding kinda gameplay.

Destiny 2 would be only welcomed if you could carry over from Destiny 1, otherwise peeps wouldn't even bother going through the same thing just with a different coating, it's basically like that cryptarch pic where he is holding a legendary engram, while in the bottom it's ripped a little bit and you can see the green color showing.

I'd rather they delay Destiny 2 well into next year, rather than push out something that doesn't improve much over the original.

I hope Destiny 2 is actually a "shared-world" shooter. The hub shouldn't be a menu in space it should be on the planet itself for one. Secondly if they are going to have events in particular areas such as Taken King bosses to defeat and there almost never anyone instanced in with you, then it fails.

Also they need matchmaking for raids.

Also having a better system for spotaneoulsy forming fire teams from the Tower would be great. You should be able to register on a board for a fire team to go and do content.

Shouldn't even be a sequel! The game requires online to play....just update it via expansions.....there's no WoW2 just expansions and that game is still king over a decade of being out.

So no sequel....no expansions in year 2 other than gayness like festival events and the laughable racing? GTFO......bring on the division!

why would an online only game need a sequel at all? could they not just maintain the current expansion every so often model?

@pboontap: Because instead of just buying $40 DLC here and there, you're now having to buy a $60 sequel every year or so AND $40 DLC on top of that.

In other words it's delayed... surprised.... I'm betting it's not because of any real delays, but on par with the original Destiny, they're just trying to figure out what they can skimp on and hold back for expansions lol.

Destiny article cue the complain-a-thon...people with crystal balls and psychic abilities will chime in about what the future holds(funny they are on here and not rich with such abilities). Then we have those who say the game is this and that and they stopped playing but somehow can't not post in an article about it based on their biased ideas about it from 2014 and no actual playtime with the current form of the game. Oh internet you are sole source of internet attention ho's and liars of the highest order, never fail me in that regard.

@xenomorphalien: lol.. they said the ip, the franchise would run 10 years... not this one game with patches a la WoW... this was very clearly stated. At the same time they also told us the plans of running each installment every 2 years, with dlc in between.

@xenomorphalien: Thinking isn't an option it's actually necessary, who the hell runs one game for ten years? No one sets out to do that, if it happens is another story but what you're suggesting is utter nonsense. I was always a 10 year franchise consisting of 4 games in total. We perish because we lack information.
