Destiny 2 Devs Define What's Free And What's Paid Going Forward

Free updates vs. DLC

Destiny 2 has been a little unclear about what content is free through updates and what will only be available to players who shell out for the optional DLC, but in an update today on Bungie's official blog, the developer tried to make that designation a little clear.

As the graphic below makes clear, there are three basic tiers of content: expansion, seasons, and Eververse. Expansions are "purchasable updates that typically add new Story, Destinations, and Gear, as well as new Crucible, Strike, and Raid Lair content." So new Legendaries and Exotics, destination rewards, and additional campaign content will require buying into the game's DLC.

Free players will have access to "Iron Banner, Faction Rallies, and their rewards." And the developers added that "new Seasonal rewards from Crucible, Strikes, and Trials of the Nine will be available to all players." This follows the progression from a previous update where, following the cancellation of December's Faction Rally, both that mode and the Iron Banner were opened up to all players.

Eververse will still be a separate "elective" purchase, however Bungie is making several big changes to how that content will be distributed. These changes will all go into effect starting February 13 on Xbox One, PS4, and PC with the Crimson Days event, and Bungie promises "even more changes on the way in Season 3." And you should also check out Destiny 2's upcoming Masterworks update, which will introduce armor to the system. Faction Rallies are coming back soon, and quality-of-life changes are on the way.
