The Daikatana Deathmatch tournament kicks off at 5 p.m. Pacific Standard Time today (March 19) on Mplayer. The multiplayer demo version of Ion Storm's upcoming shooter will be the version of choice for the tournament (as well as being the only version of the game available).

Four tourney winners will take a trip to Dallas to face John Romero in a deathmatch of the game he created. The grand prize winner (who will emerge from those four Dallas-bound gamers) will receive a 450-MHz Pentium II computer system, a replica of the Daikatana sword and other prizes.

The Daikatana multiplayer demo includes two deathmatch maps - one from Kyoto, Japan of 2455 C.E. and the other from San Francisco of 2030 C.E. Five weapons are available in the demo: the Disruptor Glove, Sidewinder, Shotcycler-6, ION blaster, and C4 Vizatergo.

The tourney will run for four weeks on Mplayer. At the end of each week, the top 32 ranked players will face each other in a bracketed deathmatch tournament. The winner of each week's contest will head to Dallas to meet and engage in a battle of rapid motor responses with Romero.

Mplayer will also be holding weekly Daikatana-related prize drawings during the length of the tournament.
