Death Stranding's Review Embargo Has Ended: Come Read Our Review

Does Kojima Productions' first game match his work on Metal Gear Solid?

Update: The review embargo has lifted, and our Death Stranding review is now live, as are many other outlets' thoughts. Check out our video review above, and for more takes, check out our review roundup. You now have less than a week to wait if you're excited to get your hands on the game, with the PS4 release coming on November 8. If you'd prefer to play on your computer, a PC version was recently confirmed for release in 2020.

Original Story: First revealed at E3 2016, Death Stranding's development has been accompanied by a slow-drip of trailers and gameplay demos. Only in the past few weeks have people outside of Kojima Productions been able to get their hands on the long-awaited game, and although opinions are still under embargo, that won't be the case for much longer. The review embargo for Death Stranding lifts on November 1 at 12:01AM PT / 3:01 AM ET / 7:01 AM GMT / 6 PM AET. So not long now. If you need something to do while you wait, check out the Death Stranding launch trailer--though, be warned, it's a bit spoilery.

Now Playing: Death Stranding Video Review

The most recent opportunity for Kojima to demonstrate what he's been working on since leaving Konami was Tokyo Game Show 2019. There, over the course of two days, Kojima gave us a deeper look into the moment-to-moment gameplay of Death Stranding, which included everything from mundane traversal to battles against supernatural enemies. He followed that up with a closer look at the private quarters of Sam Porter Bridges, the main character played by Norman Reedus. It was a very revealing demo, though not in the way you might expect.

Reedus is but one of many celebrities that will appear in Death Stranding, along with Guillermo Del Toro, Mads Mikkelsen, and Lea Seydoux, to name but a few. Sadly, Keanu Reeves won't make an appearance despite rumors. We've also learned that real-world brands like Monster Energy will also be prominently featured in the game--it's anyone's guess as to whether or not these inclusions will have an impact on the credibility of the fictional (and strange) world that Kojima has crafted.

In fact, the strangeness has been at the heart of the game's messaging since the very beginning. If you fell off trying to make sense of Death Stranding a long time ago, now is the perfect time to brush up on everything we've learned so far, including details about the world, the characters that inhabit it, and the unusual constraints that will be set upon Sam as you guide him across treacherous terrain in a bid to reunite the once united states of America.

If our current Death Stranding guide isn't enough, you can also take Kojima's very straightforward explanation below:

After Death Stranding reviews land on November 1, the rest of us will have to wait until the game releases on November 8 to see what all the fuss is about. (Kept you waiting, huh?)

You guys are all wrong regarding online play, sigh.

First of all you can play the game 100% offline.

Second: Hideo said online play has extra content such as not-live player trade, side quest objective partial or full fulfillment (or required items), and more.

Basically, if you play offline and you have missing items required, another player with surplus of that can’t trade it or even give it to you for free.

If you are offline you obviously going to have to do all yourself.

Too rational and level headed.

People would rather get hysterical over mistrusts and lies than look up the facts.

@Bread_or_Decide: They're not facts until we're playing the game. I've bought plenty of games that were 100% different than the developers said they would be.

Admittedly, I haven't had this experience from Kojima. But if you try hard to avoid telling people what your game is actually like until the last possible moments, then you're kind of inviting them to maximize their made-up BS.

We got 45 minutes of game play.

Believe your own eyes. THAT is the game. Exploration, crafting, stealth, and delivering items. There are weapons and you have to take care of your jar baby.

The game play has been communicated many times. The world is mysterious and intriguing. People are confusing the two.

Going to be interesting to hear the consensus among the gaming media/community regarding Kojima’s latest.

Probably more-so than any game in the last few years Death Stranding has built up a ridiculous amount of hype and curiosity over not only its release but just what exactly it even is. For such a high-profile game it is almost unheard of for all in the gaming world to still not even know what the main premise/narrative of the game is.

Personally, I think this is a good thing as nowadays we seem to know any and everything related to a new title before it even launches. If anything, this strategy harkens back to the “old days” of gaming where you only knew about a game thanks to the various gaming magazines that all vied for one’s attention.

This ninja can’t wait to get his grubby little paws on this title as it is one of the few I have eagerly looked forward to in the last few years.

@Mozelleple112: Well either this game is a bonafide masterpiece then, OR, it's another scam and ploy, by Sony and Kojima and the press, to try to sell more games. And it will get 9 or 10's, whether it deserves it or not. I don't trust it. I was fooled once with MGSV. There is no in between. So either it's amazing or we're getting scammed again for sales.

So if they give it a 6 then the game is legit crap.

If they give it a 9, then the review is lying.

Hmmm...interesting scenario you've crafted.

Nah, it's a 5 or less and it's crap. Here is m y breakdown

10: give me a break, not it's not a 10

9: hmmmm. Maybe. But more likely just for fanboys

7 and 8: Must be good, probably too good for the masses, otherwise they'd give it a 9 or 10

6: niche, meaning you will either love it or hate it. Often misunderstood, but sometimes just mediocre. Rarely as bad as people think 6's are.

5: approaching crap

4 or less: avoid. I mean really why bother with 1, 2, 3, and 4 scores? Just mark it <5

Honestly if it were up to me, there'd be no scores, just reviews. Maybe a little "TLDR" blurb at the bottom of the review, but no scores.

Online is not required.

Scroll down to the online question. He specifically states online is not required.

" if you want to play the game stand-alone, without an online component, that’s perfectly fine".

From a few of the articles out there it sounds like Kojima may be utilizing a similar model more associated with the Soulsborne games in which online isn't necessary but it's addition can bring another dimension to the overall flow of the game.

If this system wasn't an option I could see some raising concern but I imagine that's not going to be the case.

Probably the best thing anyone could do before going into a title that has this much hype. I imagine if we used that approach with every game we might come away more impressed then we usually do.

Knowing 70% of a game before it even drops really puts a limit on just how much excitement and surprise one can have.

Well, having enough faith in your game to lift a review embargo a week early is rare, and is either a good sign or Kojima hubris. Let’s hope good sign.

Quoted for TRUTH!

I think the last game I saw something that far out for (and that had a considerable amount of hype going for it.) was God of War. And we all know how that turned out.
