Death Stranding Sequels Might Be Necessary, Kojima Says

Kojima Productions' upcoming PS4 game could end up being the start of a series.

Death Stranding releases for PS4 on November 8 and, in the lead-up to its release, director Hideo Kojima has been discussing its themes and his ambitions for it. Kojima previously said that, for him, Death Stranding marks the creation of a new genre, which he called "Strand Games." However, for the genre to be explored properly, more Death Stranding projects may be required.

Speaking to GameSpot, Kojima indicated that Death Stranding alone may not be enough to give Strand Games the permanence he wants the genre to have. This, he believes, is because the concepts and ideas are new territory for him as a creator and for those who play the game and experience them.

Now Playing: Death Stranding Sequels Could Happen - GS News Update

What is put forth in Death Stranding could serve as the foundation for the genre, but Kojima also expressed a desire to refine them, which would also ensure awareness of the genre remains.

"I'm not really sure," he said when asked if Death Stranding would become a series. "The most difficult part is, when you create something new, you have to create a sequel and then a third version or it [will] not remain as a genre.

"When this game comes out there will be a lot of pros and cons, and [these elements could become the essence of the core part], but I think it's better that I keep it going in a sequel."

While Kojima seemed to suggest a revision for- and/or a sequel to-Death Stranding could be required, though he noted there were other projects on the table too.

"Yeah, probably at least 1.5, and then 2, maybe, at least so that it remains and people are aware of the genre. There are a lot of other projects that come up like TV dramas and things like that. A lot of pitches come my way."

A roadblock, however, is finding the time to tackle follow-ups and exploring other projects. "Why I can't say it's definite is because I only have one body, and there are many projects that I have to be involved with. And it's really tough for me physically to do many things at once."

Kojima has been open about not completely understanding his own game since its gameplay and world view are something new. However, in the interview he said that much of Death Stranding is inspired by the Japanese concept of "omoiyari," which can be loosely translated to compassion for others. He goes on to explore the various ways this omoiyari can manifest, the feelings it can inspire, and how that all manifests in the game.

Death Stranding had a major presence at Tokyo Game Show 2019, where Kojima appeared on stage multiple times to demonstrate various aspects of the game. These include Death Stranding's core gameplay, which involves making deliveries. He also showed off what players will be able to do in Death Stranding's safe house, where main character Sam Bridges recovers between jobs.

Maybe consider not tweeting something like what you're eating or which celebrity you're meeting every 10 minutes then?

He might called them “Strand Games” but my guess is people will call it a Walker or Delivery game. It’s not often that genres are named after games. “MetroidVania” is an exception.

@glaciusts: As long as this is not a new term for soap opera nobody will care. To start a new genre the game would have to be mindblowingly good. It will be interesting to watch what unfolds but I will be busy tending to my backlog.

@timemasheen: No. What's incredible is that the creative mind behind the game doesn't actually know what it is.

This guy thinks he OWNS the new Genre...lol You know, other devs and people can make games in your "genre" if they want.

Ok so why can't you tell us, what this genre is? IN a nutshell? What makes it different? What am I doing differently here, that makes it a new genre? He can't even explain that!! lol

@willowvale75: He wants other people to make games like this, Willow. That's why he's expressing his desire to continue this mechanical exploration and establish the genre. He's got this thing and is unsure how it should ultimately be expanded upon and/or non pejoratively streamlined. Iteration is required.

You can watch the presentation and perceive that the core of this game revolves around walking to locations across varied terrain surfaces, while managing your stamina. There's also within the core itself contained the combat and infiltration modules of V which amount to the whole of that game's core.

However, the gameplay appears not far removed from their previous modern efforts, which were in themselves not far removed from the efforts of more traditional AAA developers, by virtue of its high level components. The open world side content busywork and discrete progression systems in place.

@willowvale75: Nowhere is it mentioned nor implied that he thinks he owns the genre, merely that it takes multiple (successful) games for a genre to be established. It is also mentioned in the article that he fully admits he doesn't quite have a grasp on what the genre is... he is still exploring it through this game.

As skeptical as you may be about Kojima's comments, remember that it was Metal Gear that established all of the conventions for the stealth action genre. Likewise, the stealth action became a genre after Metal Gear and it's successors.. In the history of video games that will be told whether you agree or not, the OG Metal Gear will always be considered the pivotal game in creating stealth action genre. It may not be the 'first' game to implement stealth elements, but it is certainly the most important.

Maybe they will put tree's in the next one. Anyone else notice the distinct lack of foliage, plants and trees so far?

@barcaazul: You make foliage grows by peeing on it (not even joking). It's a mechanic that Kojima took almost 5 minutes to explain, the more players piss on the same spot, better the "reward".

Gotta say, Im extremely skeptical of this game. Im also doubtful it will get many sequels.

I appreciate what Kojima is trying to do, the whole mind trip and ridiculous psychological horror with invisible alien fetuses. There is definitely a place for that in the industry, but its also definitely a niche space. I have complete faith in Kojima's brilliance and vision, but that doesn't always translate into a good game. It seems almost like Death Stranding is in the wrong medium, like it would be better off being a movie, and its being rigged into the format of a video game because thats what Kojima knows and is good at.

Nobody's played the game so this is all blind speculation of course. Lets hope Im wrong and it turns into an epic series.

@justin760: Let's see how it plays. I share your opinion but I also do think this game has more to offer in terms of gameplay than what we've seen. We've seen the mechanics applied in open world traversal parts but I'm thinking missions/levels will have more than delivery. At least I hope.

That won't be necessary. I'm sure playing the game with 100% pure artisan meth-heroin-LSD eye drops, nude with just my underwear on my head and tinfoil socks, combined with a mix of death metal and whale-mating calls crank to 11 blaring in the background will clear up any holes in the plotline.

My personal interest in this game has tanked considerably over the last few months or so, mainly because of underwhelming play-through demos and an onslaught of media presence. It's just killing my enthusiasm as each day passes and we're already having discussions about sequels. Really?

This game isn’t going to sell nearly enough to warrant a sequel. The amount of confusion it has already caused is not going to be good for sales. There’s a difference between creating mystery/intrigue and just being plain confusing and looking boring. I see FAR more comments of people saying it looks stupid, compared to the comments from people who think it looks interesting.

@justthetip: i made the decision to pass on this game entirely once Kojima said that even he doesnt understand it. I dnt want to play a game that i cant make sense of. Kojima is feeling the pressure that hes 92% done with a game with no purpose or substance. Which is why hes talking sequels so he can try to make sense of it. Either way, i'm not buying

Tbh, I wish less developers made serieseses. I prefer new IPs. Sequels are almost always disappointing. The only developer I can think of that makes sequels the right way (for me) is Taro Yoko's team.

@srfilk86: New IP's are a gamble and a huge investment. If they fail, entire studios can go down with them. When you have a hit, sequels are the best way to keep your company afloat, and your employees paid so they can take care of their families.

Look at how much hate Death stranding is getting. And you think companies are eager to create crazy new things for gamers to hate?

The gaming industry would die under such uncertainty and gamers don't like new things, as much as they say they do.

And I disagree, gaming is the only area where sequels are almost always amazing. It's movies where they always disappoint.

@srfilk86: well, I’m kind of with you. Sad truth is, gamers have such high expectations. New IP = trying out untested mechanics. Take uncharted for example. The first game is okay. If it released today albeit with better graphics, I don’t think it would do so well. I think games should be given sequels, but devs should be left to explore new avenues over time.

Uncharted 2 is a gem of a game and builds so wonderfully on the foundations of the first but couldn’t exits without number 1 selling well.

All this to say, without naming them, I’ve played some good games that sold poorly because of lower production values or untested mechanics that would have been really good franchises if a sequel had been greenlit.

@gleencross: You're the the one insinuating that his creation of the stealth action genre is no big deal. From your condescending language and use of exclamation marks.

That is the childish behavior.

An adult would recognize what an accomplishment it is that he left any mark at all in the world of video games and that the creation of a whole new genre is no easy thing.

Or should I end that with a "Woot" so you'd better understand it?

Releasing this so late for the 2011 tech out-dated PS4 (Xbox not any better btw) with the PS5 just around the corner was a horrible mistake. Hideo games were always, "special", for some the best works ever created (me for one), but horrible for newcomers to his type of games and gamestyles. Why would I buy a PS4 just to play that game? Should have released it for PC, and the PS5 better be able to play PS4 games.

@Bread_or_Decide: Plenty people do not have a PS4. I did not get one when the problems with the security and safety of users were in question (ALL creditcard infos and addresses got stolen by hackers, I hope ALL PS4 players updated their info !!!), and also while it had months online-gaming problems, safe to say, I was not the only one. We skipped it, and now that the PS5 is 1 year away, instead of enhancing the game for the PS5 and maybe bundle it, he went to make it for again, an outdated year 2011 tech console. Let's put it this way, it wasn't the brightest idea, otherwise he would have at least made it also for the PC.

@phili878: Plenty of people do have one. Over 80 million do. Not sure what you think is good business, but releasing a game with 80 million plus potential customers vs one million brand new customers. Do you know where the better odds are? Don't worry, I'm sure they will port an enhanced over to the PS5. Although I get the feeling you don't really care about the PS5 at all. You want the game on PC. That's all you're really trying to say in the end.
