Death Stranding Invents A New Genre, Kojima Says

Death Stranding is an "action strand game," says Kojima.

There's no denying that Death Stranding looks like Hideo Kojima's typical brand of perplexing. While it has elements of modern game design, what we've seen from the game doesn't seem to fit into any one specific genre. According to Kojima himself, that's because he has invented something new with this one.

The Japanese auteur took to Twitter to break down exactly what he's set out to do with the new PS4 exclusive. Death Stranding is an action game, as evidenced by the release date trailer above, but Kojima says the game is creating a hybrid of something entirely new. He calls Death Stranding an "action game/strand game(social strand system)," a project that's not quite a stealth game but not quite a first-person shooter either.

Now Playing: Death Stranding Release Date Trailer

There are elements of both featured in Death Stranding, with protagonist Sam Porter Bridges (portrayed by The Walking Dead actor Norman Reedus) shooting and stealthing his way through the dilapidated world Kojima has conjured up, but Kojima seems more interested in the "strand" part of Death Stranding. He says the game is "incorporating the concept of connection(strand)" to create a "totally brand new genre."

Genre creation isn't new for the prolific developer. With the Metal Gear Solid HD Collection, Kojima coined the term transfarring, a portmanteau of transfer and sharing in which a save file could be moved between the PSP, PS Vita, PS3, or PS4, allowing for seamless, continuous play. The Tactical Espionage Action of the Metal Gear franchise also falls into Kojima's genre-blending/creation ethos.

Kojima managed to get some big name actors to appear in Death Stranding. Along with longtime collaborators Guillermo del Toro and Norman Reedus, Death Stranding will star Lea Seydoux (The Lobster, Spectre), Lindsay Wagner (Grey's Anatomy, The Bionic Woman), Mads Mikkelsen (Doctor Strange, Rogue One: A Star Wars Story), Margaret Qualley (Death Note, The Leftovers), director Nicolas Winding Refn (Drive, Valhalla Rising), Tommie Earl Jenkins (The Bourne Identity, Gambit), and Troy Baker (Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain, The Last of Us).

Death Stranding releases for PS4 on November 8.

Salty wannabe game journalist pre-judgers comments getting on my nerves these days. Why can't people just wait and see? I have lost faith in the imagination of the gamer (if they ever had any). I can't play another stale shooter (I go days/weeks without touching a controller gasp these days) and would welcome anything/something/God please new. Kojima will bring the magic and mystery that I crave and don't get these days. Kojima is the anti cookie cutter game.

I've yet to see a single thing about it that suggests "new genre". This is just his typical self-aggrandizing marketing twaddle.

Admittedly, the lack of transparency in the game has stagnated my interest for the time being. I can't wait for the release of course, but the mystique has vaporized for me. I have high hopes for a solid title.

Very excited to see what this ends up being. The trailer looks amazing and hints at deep and entirely novel world building. Some of it makes me think of Dune, especially the bridge babies, which remind me of Dune’s guild members that people use for space travel. My mind is whirling just with the flashes of concepts we’ve been shown.

It's weird that the west has become more conformist than Japanese. He wants to try new things outside rpgfpsfortnite and he gets bashed.

@cetaepsilon: I think what I've seen so far looks cool, but I think the way Kojima is handling the release of information about this game could be problematic for some. This could contribute to some of the bashing that you mentioned.

There are two camps on this one I think. First, we have the folks who would buy anything by Kojima,, no matter what. No probs with that then.

Then you have the folks who won't buy this game just because his name is on it, or haven't loved his games in the past. Things are probably a little more problematic for these folks because even with everything that has been shown so far, we still really don't have good details on gameplay mechanics, story, etc.

I think by now we all expect this level of secrecy and weirdness with Kojima, but before it was with MGS, so no matter how funky pre-release footage/info got, we still pretty much knew for the most part what we would ultimately be getting.

Not so with DS. We know who is in it, we've (maybe?) seen a very little bit of the mechanics, and we know it's pretty. That's probably not enough for anyone who might be on the fence about all of it.

While I know I'll be picking it up, maybe Kojima should talk a little less, and show a little more. I don't want to hear about how it's a whole new genre, I want to see something to actually back that claim up. If it's really all that, the haters and doubters would get on board, (even if they probably wouldn't admit it, since it's cool to hate on everything now).

I'm sure more info will be forthcoming before release, but as much as I like Kojima, this whole "I'm too cool to just show you my game" routine is getting a bit old.

All just my opinion of course, not looking to piss Kojima fans off or anything.

Dude, Kojima is high on himself. He's not a WRITER. He has crazy ideas and mashes them together in a game.

MGS V was the worst game I played that year. What a mess.

@willowvale75: And yet, Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain was objectively the highest rated game of 2015, and if I'm not mistaken a true 10/10 rating here on Gamespot? Subjectively I think MGSV: TPP is one of the greatest games of all time, I absolutely loved it. if Kojima was actually allowed to finish it, MGSV would be the first 11/10 game.

Yet more inane BS from the guy whose only good series was metal gear solid. And even then, it got more and more confusing towards the end.

Kojima is a hack. The game is obviously just like farcry. Just with a more sci fi dystopian future quality to it.
Stealth shooter with some horror aspects thrown in.

@forester057: Yeah? What facts? All you have done is attempt at insults.
Whereas, below, I have shown the logic behind my thinking. Here, let me copy paste it for you to read!

My statement was meant to imply that this game would probably end up playing like farcry. A futuristic dystopian Farcry.

Guys in trucks with guns. Stealth and guns. Open world. You'll probably end up taking over some outposts at some point! With some horror aspects thrown in for the invisible guys chasing you down.

To put it simply: Your own ineptitude at conversation aside, my points (both logical and reasonable) stand. All you have done is attempt insults. For which I hope you get banned.

@Mozelleple112: The first metal gear game to be on those charts is sons of liberty. It's sitting at 42.

Then the Phantom Pain (5) at 62.

But if you would stop fanboying for a second, and consider the following:

The only games, make by Kojima, that have ever been fantastic were Metal Gear games.

The rest were niche games that no one, outside of fans of those games or Kojima loyalists, remembers.

No one remembers Boktai. No one remembers Penguin Adventure.

No one remembers Policenauts.

If someone says "Hideo Kojima" most gamers go "Metal Gear".

Some of them would go "Who?"

But not a single one of those games made by him, outside of metal gear solid, has ever been constantly successful.

This game looks like a complete and total narrative mess. No one has understood the trailers. And I bet there's going to be another one of those Metal Gear 4 hour long cutscenes.

The man should just make movies. So, yes. One hit wonder. Hack. These are words I associate with Hideo Kojima.

Not to mention the sheer arrogance of the man.

@vilified_signals: Metal Gear Solid 4 scored 10/10 here at Gamespot, which is a dime a dozen, it also scored a 10/10 at IGN, only 7 or 8 games in history have scored perfect 10s from the two biggest gaming reviewers, and one of the others are MGSV: Phantom Pain. That's two Kojima games. I can easily imagine Death Stranding getting 10/10 from here *and* IGN. if you prefer metacritic, well all five games from Metal Gear Solid 1 to Metal Gear Solid 5 are in the top 100. That's not a bad record for a man. in Godjima we trust

@Mozelleple112: Ok, sure. I haven't once knocked the quality of the Metal Gear games. But it was only the metal gear games that were any good. There are no other games from Kojima that were even remotely as well thought out.

This is his failing. Kojima is only good at making Metal Gear Solid. And nothing else.
The trends of his career support this. The trends of his games made support this.

Death Stranding will be no different.

Not even touching on the sheer Peter Molyneux-like arrogance "I made a new genre".
It'll just have a futuristic dystopian scifi setting. Possibly even a paranormal/horror setting.
An third person action adventure shooter with stealth elements. Nothing new here.

@vilified_signals: Your whole post is ignorant nonsense. Zone of the Enders 1 & 2 both released to unanimously solid reviews, PT was considered a horror classic and it was literally a demo, Policenauts was one of the biggest and last point and click adventure games (and it was developed for the PS1, a system that wasn't even known for it), and the game he produced, the Castlevania entry Lord of Shadows was considered the best 3D title to date. He's done plenty outside the MGS series to validate the hype surrounding this project.

It looks literally nothing like Far Cry, btw, and I have no idea how you came up with that idea besides possibly picking it out of a giant felt hat

@Kintaro5000: If they had unanimously solid reviews, why didn't they continue to make games?
Kojima isn't known for Zone of the Enders or Policenauts. The only people who know him for that are the ones who have closely followed his career. You know, fans. Rabid that they be.

My statement was meant to imply that this game would probably end up playing like farcry. A futuristic dystopian Farcry.
Between the guys in the trucks and everything else. Stealth and guns. Open world. You'll probably end up taking over some outposts at some point! With some horror aspects thrown in for the invisible guys chasing you down.

Kojima is just full of it. Like he always has been. He's going to become the new Peter Molyneux.

@Sound_Demon: Oh it's logic that you saw in that response? So, logically, let's look at what the OP stated......he was specifically talking about "series".....and I see the commentor speaking about a bunch of single games and a demo...it's possible you could say ZoE was a series of 2 games that only old people know about....which was rated ok, certainly not great....or it might have not ended at #2 in 2003! Do I totally agree with the OP, no....I don;t think there is any chance anyone not a weeb thinks this game is as good as any of the Far Cry games....and that includes Primal!!!

@Arkhalipso: lol....dude, like MGS was totally revolutionary for its time....like hiding in a box was visionary stealth mechanics.....so visionary it's been copied by.....*crickets*. I freely admit I cannot speak to those games in their day, but I can speak to MGSV in 2015 and that game was hot garbage, yet the Kojima fan boys slurped it (same way they've been slurping Death Stranding while having NO CLUE what the game was....not even the genre).....how garbage was that game....same year as Fall Out 4 and Witcher 3.....compare it to either game....you can't...trash.....pretty good stealth mechanics.....one of the worst stories in any video game I have ever played.....utter Japanese nonsense......154 of the exact same side-op, with 3 variations in every single 3-hut town.....kill X, fulton X, steal the docs....over and over and over....and you always had to jump back on the damn chopper, spend 5 minutes getting to the nonsensical mother base, where there was NOTHING to do, just to go back out......and 50 main missions.....I mean 34 different missions, with the final 16 being the same as the previous 16, you just need to do them better.....and after EVERY SINGLE main mission credits rolled like it was the end of a movie.....immersion factor = 0.....amateur hour, yet still lauded by the weebs.

How about we just drop all the ridiculous hyperbole and let the title speak for itself.

I was a little apprehensive about how Death Stranding was coming along considering the relatively little news released about it. That changed dramatically a week ago with the unveiling of its new trailer (as well as its release date.).

If anything, my interest is peaked hearing its relatively soon release window.

All I know is that if what Kojima is saying about this new title creating an entirely new genre of game is in fact true then the gaming industry might be in for a big surprise.

While some would argue that Kojima didn’t create the “stealth” genre in modern gaming it was Metal Gear Solid’s stealth influence that has seeped its way into every action type game out there. Seriously, every title that has gamers doing stealth kills/takedowns owes at the very least a sliver of their gameplay to MGS.

If Death Stranding is able to pull of the same kind of thing in this new genre it could change the landscape of gaming forever.

@videogameninja:

We've been conditioned to be apprehensive, it spares us a let-down later. Making a new genre is something people will just say. Yet stealth came alive though MGS, no other game will have me sit still so long...so can lightening strike twice?

I agree, the game seems to take on more shape with each teaser. Like seeing how many characters are in that recent trailer; it actually felt like a world instead of a desktop wallpaper. It makes sense not to spell it all out like a menu.

I respect Kojima's coyness, he's been known as that crazy MGS guy all his career. Anything he puts out will be scrutinized. And Kojima has the patience to take it all. I don't doubt this game will be something special, maybe not "new genre", but it still seems like something of an experience that shouldn't be pieced out months before it's due.
