Dead Island Definitive Collection on PS4 Only Includes Original Game on Disc [UPDATE]

Dead Island: Riptide will be included as a download on PS4.

[UPDATE] Deep Silver responded to our request for comment and said, "There are limitations where you are unable to have multiple multiplayer experiences on the same disc, unfortunately we can’t comment further." The original story follows.

When Dead Island: Definitive Collection releases on PlayStation 4, only the original game will be included on the disc. If you want to play Dead Island: Riptide, however, you'll have to download it. This is unique to the PS4, as both games are included on the Xbox One version's disc.

Publisher Deep Silver revealed this in an exchange on Twitter. The two games not being included on the same disc is weird, considering Uncharted: The Nathan Drake Collection, Borderlands: The Handsome Collection, and Deep Silver's own Metro Redux all brought multiple games to the PS4 on one disc.

"We could've worded that better," Deep Silver clarified on Twitter. "You need a separate menu, you can't just put two games on disc the same way as on XB1."

Why Metro Redux had two separate menus for its games, while Dead Island doesn't is unclear. We've contacted Deep Silver for further comment on the situation and will update this story as we receive more information.

Dead Island: Definitive Collection releases for PS4 and Xbox One on May 31. PC players can buy each game individually on Steam.

Dead Island and Riptide aren't the only games included in the Definitive Collection. The third is Dead Island: Retro Revenge, and the game's premise revolves around you wanting revenge on the zombies that stole your cat. You can watch the trailer here.

I bought this game few months ago and just sat down to play riptide and very annoyed to find it not on disc.

I have been ripped off as it clearly states all three games.

Playstation also has an issue with Retro Revenge. It's not showing up in people's libraries or in the PS Store. We were supposed to get it on May 31st. I've also seen people on Steam claim they didn't get it either.

So is it a code (most likely) or a patch?

I think I see what they're trying to say now.

Bascially what they want is to combine both games into one package. So as soon as you finish Dead Island, it then goes into Dead Island Riptide without having to change the game. So essentially both games are merged into one.

Where as a Limitation on the PS4 means that they'd have to have menus to select which game you want to play.

In the case of Borderlands each game was treated as seprate therefore they could actually get away with having multiple MP experiences on the same disc. Becuase each game was its own game if that makes any sense.

My issue with the PS4 version is that they'll use this as a means of DRM to prevent players from trading in second hand copies. Similar to how online passes worked. If they include a code to download Riptide then that's an idiotc thing to do. They should instead have Riptide download as a patch.

This collection screams bargain bin and I'll pick up the XBone version in a couple of months for around $15-$20. Buying Day One just doesn't appeal to me when games drop so fast in price these days.

My question is who exactly asked for a remastered version of Dead Island? The game was fun when it came out but Dying Light overshadows it in every single way.

Pfft after you play Dying Light you won't even bat an eye to dead island.

It's at least 10x better.

@Silverline62: While I agree, I did love Dead Island and its story. It was also filled with the whole government cospiracy thing plus they had them working with a known criminal who got loose and apparently had plans to unleash the virus on the world. I mean it was really exciting from a story standpoint. I also never had a single bug in the game myself. The only annoying this I ever encountered was I did crash ONE TIME in Riptide, not the original, because me and a buddy were out on a boat in the swamps getting a letter from a campfire. A horde attacked us after we managed to land and we had tons of those mud men follow us too. Then a Butcher happened to also be nearby. We had well over 100 zombies in a small spot and I don't think my old xbox 360 could handle it (have a original white 360). Thats the only issue I ever encountered within the games. An I played it from day 1 always online. Both of them.

I do feel bad for those who claim they have issues with games that are said to have massive bugs. As I never have encountered one of them from any game I ever play. Though to be honest I guess it evens out as I tend to have bad luck in real life. So having good luck in the virtual world is nice.

Well, seems like they just prefer to make a separate app rather than having multiple games in one app, like GTAIV.

They did with SRIV before with GOoH, and it's fine. Having a separate trophies list and application are better.

@Kupin: I've got no issue with that, but it still doesn't explain why you'd need to make on of them download only. The box better say it in large print somewhere or they'll have someone who's not online buy it and kick off another PR stink that that department over at DS towers can't really afford at the moment with all the other crap they've pulled.

@7tizz: how did Sony miss anything? This is a deep silver issue and their excuse doesn't hold water, because as mentioned the Handsome Collection had both games on 1 disc and guess what? They both have multiplayer. So clearly it can be done

What happened Deep Silver? Did you master the discs without both games on and you're too cheap to fix it or something? Half the reason I like to buy disc versions is so I don't have to download games again if I deleted them and want to go back to them, so I'd skip this disc if I, um, wasn't already. Borderlands had two games on a disc, they both had the same drop in, drop out style of multiplayer.

@7tizz: if only you'd read his post where he states borderlands has the same drop in, drop out style multiplayerand has 2 games on 1 disc, exactly what deep silver is claiming prevented this from being done.... Ie a blatant lie and they are not further explaining. This is a developer/publisher issue, that's the bottom line.

@7tizz: No, I wrote this after reading the update in which Deep Silver gave a reason that makes no sense and then said they weren't going to explain it. If you found any explanation that made sense in that update, please, feel free to share it with the class.

@7tizz: I have done a little coding myself using the discs that are for a ps4. I can tell you from experience that they could have managed to get both games on the disc considering the world of even one borderland is much bigger than the world of one of the Dead Islands. As such the amount of data of both Borderlands was much more than the amount of data both Dead Islands would have taken. Considering that Riptide was actually smaller than the first game.

@7tizz: What are these limitations? Why haven't they affected other games? Why don't they affect Xbox One? Why give a one sentence answer that answers nothing and then say you're not going to elaborate on it? Do you take everything you read at face value and just accept it? Actually don't answer that 'cos I'm not coming back here to debate it any more. Let me know when someone actually explains it all.

@flames325: This is a reason? Something you'd never heard about before this very second - and is clearly bullshit that Deep Silver made up to cover up whatever nonsense they've done - factored into your console choice?

Wait, people actually want to buy these games? How many times do they have to try to release this crap before they cover their losses?
