With all the reshuffling that has taken place at Warner following the release of Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, the status of some of the projects that don't slot into DC's cinematic universe has become unclear. One such film is Justice League Dark, which looked to be moving ahead late last year. However, it now seems that it might be coming our way as an animated feature.

As reported by Comicbook.com, the British Board of Film Classification recently certified the contents of the upcoming home entertainment release for the animated Batman: The Killing Joke. One the bonus features is titled A Sneak Peak at Justice League Dark, strongly suggesting that an animated version of the property is in development.

Following the criticism that Dawn of Justice received for its dark tone, it would certainly seem logical that Warner would seek to adapt this supernatural spin on the superhero team into an animated feature instead of a live action movie. It was recently reported that the studio was very supportive of the decision to release The Killing Joke with an R certificate.

A movie version of Justice League Dark has been in development for some time. Last year both Colin Farrell and Ewan McGregor were rumoured to be in consideration for the lead role of John Constantine. Guillermo del Toro was at one point in line to direct, and submitted a potential script to Warner in 2014.

All will be revealed when The Killing Joke arrives on August 2. The much-anticipated adaptation of the classic graphic novel stars Kevin Conroy and Mark Hamill--watch the trailer here.
