DC's Batwoman Season 2 Will Feature A New Lead Character - Report
Ruby Rose quit the CW's DC show last month, but producers are not looking to recast the role of Kate Kane.
Ruby Rose surprised superhero fans when she announced she was leaving her lead role in The CW's DC show Batwoman after just one season. It has now been reported that she won't be replaced as Kate Kane and that there will be an entirely new main character in Season 2.
According to Entertainment Weekly, Batwoman producers are currently casting for the new Batwoman alias, a character named Ryan Wilder. The site states that a casting notice was posted on Reddit, calling for LGBTQ actors to audition for the role. The notice describes Ryan Wilder as "likable, messy, a little goofy, and untamed."
The document also provides some background to the character: "With no one in her life to keep her on track, Ryan spent years as a drug-runner, dodging the GCPD and masking her pain with bad habits. Today, reformed and sober, Ryan lives in a van with her plant. Ryan is the most dangerous type of fighter: highly skilled and wildly disciplined. An out lesbian. Athletic. Raw. Passionate. Fallible."
Rose was cast as Kate Kane in 2018. She initially appeared in that year's DC crossover event, before getting her own standalone show in 2019. Her departure was announced in May this year, and a subsequent report suggested that Rose was unhappy with the long hours that are required for a series lead, which led to "friction on set."
Batwoman Season 1 concluded the week of May 18, with a finale episode cliffhanger establishing a new villain. Season 2 is set to premiere sometime in January 2021, but it is unknown whether either the recasting process or the COVID-19 pandemic will lead to delays.
