DC Studios Announces The Authority Movie Based On Wildstorm Comics

The DC universe is about to get more extreme with the arrival of The Authority.

As the DC Universe begins a new era that is being spearheaded by James Gunn and Peter Safran, one of the surprise announcements today was The Authority, a comic from the Wildstorm publishing imprint. This project is still very early in development and is currently being written, although Gunn declined to reveal who the scriptwriter is.

"It isn't just a story of heroes and villains, and not every movie and TV show is going to be about good guy versus bad guy," Gunn revealed, per Variety. "There are people that are very questionable, like the Authority, who basically believe that you can’t fix the world in an easy manner, and they take things into their own hands."

Safran added that this version of The Authority is "kind of like Jack Nicholson" in A Few Good Men. "They know that you want them on the wall, or at least they believe that."

The Authority has had several incarnations over the years, with the original team lineup created by Warren Ellis and Bryan Hitch for Wildstorm Comics--which was later acquired by DC--consisting of a squad of superheroes who would often resort to extreme measures to help save the day. Over the years, several other creative teams have taken a crack at the team with one of the more recent examples being Superman and The Authority, which featured an older and wiser Man of Steel teaming up with his former nemesis Manchester Black to form a squad that could take on the jobs too dirty for the Justice League.
