David Hayter Says He Has No Role Whatsoever in Metal Gear Solid 5

"I am not in Metal Gear V. In any way. At all. No joke," series voice actor says.

Ever since it was announced that 24 actor Kiefer Sutherland--not longtime voice actor David Hayter--would play the role of Snake in Metal Gear Solid V, some fans have continued to wonder if someway, somehow Hayter would still appear in the game. Hayter now says it's not going to happen.

"Guys, for the millionth--and last--time. I am not in Metal Gear V," Hayter said on Twitter. "In any way. At all. No joke. Just not. True story."

Explaining the decision to go with a new actor--Sutherland--over Hayter, Metal Gear Solid creator Hideo Kojima said in March 2013 that, "It's a new type of Metal Gear game and we wanted to have this reflected in the voice actor as well."

In addition to playing Snake and Big Boss in the Metal Gear Solid series, Hayter wrote the screenplays for movies like X-Men, The Scorpion King, and Watchmen.

Metal Gear Solid V: Ground Zeroes launched in March 2014. It serves as somewhat of a prologue to the upcoming open-world/sandbox game Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain, which is reportedly 200 times larger than Ground Zeroes. Publisher Konami recently published a 30-minute gameplay demo that you can watch right now.

its because Solid Snake is 12 to 13 years of age thats why he is not the voice of Solid Snake Simple as that.

and Big Boss He didn't had to be the Voice on first place.

Avatar image for Dredcrumb9

<< LINK REMOVED >> Solid is a clone of Big Boss. Hayter has voiced both Solid and Big Boss more than a couple of times.

Hayters gonna hayte

All the while, Akio Otsuka remains as the protagonist voice actor in Japan. Yeah Kojima, I ain't buying your bullshit. BTW, Sutherland suuuuuucks as Snake. It just doesn't feel right.

He didn't say Metal Gear *SOLID* V though :D #HopeNeverDies

Barney's "true story" is a common meme of something that is not the case. So... David Hayer confirmed.

Kiefer Sutherland is doing a great job in Ground Zeroes. :) He'll also be voice acting in Phantom Pain too. :) David Hayter is also a great actor too. ;) Kiefer Sutherland and David Hayter are my favorite Voice Actors. :)

<< LINK REMOVED >> kiefer sutherland barely talked on that game except for "sorry to keep you waiting" line.

Avatar image for cashandchecks

Kief voice doesn't live up to the level of immersion I got listening to Hayter. Sad to say.

Avatar image for jonny_dutch

<< LINK REMOVED >> Immersion? This is the game where a malevolent AI calls you up and tells you to turn the console off, if you're feeling immersion you probably have some issues with reality.

this is just my opinion, but to not play a GAME because a certain voice actor isn't voicing a main character is a little ridiculous. the game play will not be effected and to tell the truth, i watched that 30 minuet demo recently and did snake even utter one word in that demo?? if he did, i missed it. if people arent going to play this game because of this fact, oh well, your loss i guess. I am going to play the hell out of this game because ill be too busy playing the game to even care how a voice sounds.

Avatar image for Utra

@ricku1967 I agree with you here, Sutherland as BB in my opinion is auful, it dosent suit the charicter at all, the second he opened his mouth in ground zeros i cringed, im very disappointed Kojima chose to drop a long time addition to the team for no reason other than his own attempts to please his new Hollywood friends, especially as his own experience of the game (playing the Japanese variants) wont change.

That being said,

Will it stop me buying the game? Sadly no,

Will it stop me playing and maybe even enjoying the game? probs not.

It will however ruin the experience for me, would be like Rambo without Stallone, Die Hard without Willis, Iron Man without RDJ, it will never portray to the characters as i be-leave they should, these developments have lowered my respect for the series but in the end they still get my money so Konami really dont care, sad...

I have been a customer and fan of this franchise since i first saw and heard snake talking to campbell over the codec at the age of 9 my opinion on this is not going to change any time soon.

Avatar image for ricku1967

<< LINK REMOVED >> i do understand the argument. i really do, its just me i guess..it just doesnt bother me the way it does others. I am still going to play the game, im still going to enjoy it. but comparing this situation to live movie characters being replaced isnt quite a fair comparison. Right now, i cant picture anyone other than ledger playing the joker in any more batman movies because he gave a stellar performance. voice acting in a game isnt on the same level as that to me. Like i said to someone else, it would have to be an extreme change for it to bother me. Like pee wee herman, or robert godfry ..THEN it would be a huge problem.... sutherland isnt that extreme of a change in my opinion

Avatar image for sephiroth068

I know you have your opinion and i respect that. However i disagree with one portion of your comment. Comparing it to replacing live action movie actors is a fair comparison. Having a voice actor change has relatively the same impact as seeing a live action actor changed unless the new voice is practically indistinguishable from the original, which unfortunately Sutherland is not. To say it isn't a fair comparison is an insult (at least to me anyway) to all those that worked on something as a voice actor and was replaced and to the fans that enjoyed the work itself. It implies that a voice actor is insignificant as a job when compared to a live action movie role (not saying that's what you mean, just that it's what it implies, though in terms of popularity, a VA is less significant) and that replacing them is an easy thing to do and should not be a big deal.

You say that you couldn't imagine anyone else as Joker than Heath Ledger (which is a moot point now anyway sine he passed away not to mention that particular Batman universe is done anyway so he would've been replaced anyway). Well I'm sure many felt the same about Jack Nicholson back then when he did the Joker and he's never been cast again (of course he was younger then). It's the same principle for the whole Sutherland as Big Boss thing. Some people just can't stand the idea of Hayter not voicing him because he's done it for so long that it's practically him. You can't just easily replace someone like that and expect many people to not care.

Sorry to bring this whole thing up again but that particular comment really rubbed me the wrong way even though I'm sure you didn't mean anything negative by it. This is just my opinion just like you have yours. With all that said, I'm still playing MGSV regardless and I'm actually warming up a bit to Sutherland. I just didn't expect to like the chance get at first and I was right about that but I did eventually adjust.

Avatar image for edhc44

<< LINK REMOVED >> I've read some of your comments and while your entitled to your opinion, people who disagree are entitled to theirs. Even though I won't avoid MGSV due to this change, I just can't take it passively. David Hayter has been Snake since 1998 and it is disrespectful, to say the least, what Kojima did. I remember the first time it was announced. Hayter was surprised that he learned of MGSV just like us: on the internet. I mean, c'mon! Like someone else already said here, at least give the guy a call! Even if his main job, as you claim, is not voice acting, there's no denial that he is the one who gave life to Snake. Whatever Sutherland is attempting to do, he's no match for Hayter's portrayal. It is a matter of legacy.

Furthermore, have you ever played a Metal Gear Solid game? Storytelling is as much a big deal as gameplay, time and again the series has even been criticized for putting too much focus on cutscenes, even. In some games, story don't matter (in fact, some games should not even try to have one at all), but in Metal Gear it does as much as in a good, old-fashioned J-RPG, so if they change the main character voice actor, it is not ridiculous AT ALL if people steer away from the game due to that. I for one, find it painful hearing Sutherland's voice coming out of Snake's mouth. The only thing that match this pain is Kojima interview as for why they had this chance. Look for it on youtube. THAT is what I'd call ridiculous.

Avatar image for ricku1967

@edhc44 @ricku1967 and if you did read my comments you would see i wrote "this is just my opinion" in one and in another i wrote "i understand what you are saying, its just my opinion"..in no way did i not let anyone voice their own opinion or disparage them for making their opinion. if i did, i will apologize to them, that wasnt my intent...

With that said...i have played every single metal gear game. love the series. and in MY opinion, the only way a voice over change would bother me would be in the extreme..like pee wee Herman voicing snake or something ridiculous as that. it just doesn't bother me as much as the next guy. thats just me..I happen to like sutherland's voice work..is he better than Hayter?? that debatable, probably not...but having Sutherland be the voice for snake in this game is not a game changer to me by any means. I am still going to enjoy the game as i always have...and to me, me alone, not calling anyone else out when i say this, but my feelings on this is i wont let a voice change effect my buying decision ..to me its ridiculous not to buy a game because a voice actor isnt involved..thats just my opinion. it just a game after all. The way he was treated, it is bad, but thats between him and them, has nothing to do with me..me voicing my anger at thier dicision isnt going to make them change their mind

By the way, i respect your opinion and you have every right to voice your opinion. If in anyway i offended you with any of my opinions i do apologize.

Avatar image for pizzaman107

<< LINK REMOVED >> I do agree its ridiculous not to play the game because they changed the voice actor but it doesnt mean i have to like the idea.A characters voice actor is very important. He is what defines the character among other things.Ive associated snakes character to David Hayter and i consider anything else bs.Its like watching breaking bad and all of a sudden they decide itd be a good idea if pinkman was done by Ashton Kutcher or some shit. Its totally absurd.Nevertheless i have faith in Kojima.

Avatar image for ricku1967

<< LINK REMOVED >><< LINK REMOVED >> i understand what you are saying, its just my opinion. its absurd to me to not play a game because a voice is different on a character. it has never bothered me in the slightest in the 30 some odd years i have been gaming. changing live actors in a show/movie is a different situation all together...some actors play a character so well, they are unreplaceable. to the point you cant picture anyone else playing that role. Like i cant picture anyone else playing stark in ironman than Downey Jr. for example. voice acting and live acting is like apples and oranges..different altogether.

Avatar image for youlostme302

David hayter is solid snake.

Keif Sutherland is big boss.

And I'm sure kojima will release a story dlc letting them face each other. Like the MSX version.

Avatar image for edhc44

<< LINK REMOVED >> I don't understand why people keep hammering on this "Sutherland is Big Boss" bullshit. As if David Hayter hadn't been cast as Big Boss in MGS3, Portable Ops and Peace Walker. Get over it people, this is just Kojima crapping all over the place. There's no logical explanation.

I will not touch this game nor GZ. To screw a guy over that helped your game series to classic status & your name stay prominent is bullshit. Not even a cal saying thanks for everything but we're not going to have you help this time. That would have showed respect. DH helped this asshole take the MG name out of the dump after the fanboy outcry cause of Raiden & also make more money with Twin Snakes, because Hayter basically made TS's happen by taking a pay cut & convincing the other voice actors do the same. Real loyalty.

It was a million years ago, but I remember this too. I want to say it was GamePro or Game Informer revealed this in their physical magazine, in an interview with Hayter.

Avatar image for ricku1967

<< LINK REMOVED >> ahh ok...i never heard that, thats why i wanted to know. but since Hayter wrote the screenplays for movies like X-Men, The Scorpion King, and Watchmen. i think he is doing just fine without MG

Avatar image for neocaleb

I like Hayter, but despite that, I still think Kiefer Sutherland is a great choice for the series. He was very good in Ground Zeroes.

Avatar image for ricku1967

@neocaleb i just watched an old interview with IGN he did and he said voice acting is his side job, he takes it seriously, but his main job he cares about is his screen writing and acting. so, I think he will be fine without this one game under his belt

Avatar image for PSYCHOV3N0M

I believe that he is telling the truth that he will def NOT be in MGS5 at all.

However with that said, I STILL have to say to him: "C'mon man I don't believe you. I know you're gonna be in the game."

Avatar image for MichaelPayneV

<< LINK REMOVED >> He said Metal Gear V, not Metal Gear SOLID V!

Avatar image for firehawk998

Now while I liked Hayters voice for BB in the previous games to me they should have hired another VA for BB. While Solid is BB clones , he is not the perfect clone like Solidus was so BB having a different voice than Solid wouldlnt have been far fetched. Besides I think Keifer does a good job voicing a more darker , experienced BB.

Kojima has verbalized how he wants to end Metal Gear. I can't think of a better way then subtracting a fundamental part of it. I will play this game. Although I hope Kojima can move on and make another coat tail shake'n series. (Snatcher/Metal Gear fan)

Avatar image for Redsyrup

Not playing this till David Hayter is on board.

Avatar image for rocky_841

I love Sutherland in 24. But in MGS5, every time I hear his voice I feel like Jack Bauer is speaking. It pretty much kills the immersion. I would have been equally upset if they had cast Hayter to voice Jack Bauer in a 24 game. Even Richard Doyle would have been far better than this if they were upset with Hayter for some reason.

Anyway, what's done is done and it's no use crying over it now. All I can say is that I would be more than happy to pay for a Hayter voice pack as DLC which dubs over (replaces) Sutherland's voice. Even a Doyle voice pack would be great. A game like MGS5 deserves perfection. Cmon Kojima, there's money in it!

Avatar image for rocky_841

I love Sutherland in 24 but now every time I hear snake talk I feel like jack Bauer is talking. It kills the immersion. I would be just as upset if they got hayter to voice jack in a 24 game. Heck even Richard Doyle as snake in mgs5 would have been far better than this.

Avatar image for DanielL5583

If I had a penny for all the cries to change back to Hayter rather than Sutherland, I would probably be able to buy a PS4.

Yes, Hayter is the iconic voice of Solid Snake. BUT NOT BIG BOSS. Three out of the six games that have Big Boss as a voiced character have performances attributed to Hayter, with two credited to Kiefer Sutherland, and the last to Richard Doyle. Sutherland can bridge the gap between Hayter and Doyle, and, in fact, Sutherland's acting fits in well with Big Boss's emotional stresses at this time.

Bear in mind that Hayter is in his early 40s, whereas Sutherland is slowly approaching 50. Big Boss, at the time of PP, will be 49. Big Boss is going to feel old and decrepit, and Sutherland can express these emotions effectively and be able to give a convincing performance because of it.

Also, what's wrong with a change of actor? It's like changing the actor in something is the worst thing ever or something with you people...

Allow me to remind you of the 007 franchise. Six Bonds for 23 films, the first Bond being Sean Connery. He had a break, they got George Lazenby in for one film, brought back Sean for another, he retired from the role, they got Roger Moore in his place, he then retired from the role after a seven film run, to be replaced by Timothy Dalton, who lasted two films before Pierce Brosnan filled his shoes for four movies, and now we have Daniel Craig.

In the span of 50 years, James Bond has been portrayed by six individuals in the main movie series alone. And for Metal Gear, Hayter has portrayed Snake and Big Boss for 12 years, from MGS to PW. What's wrong with bringing in someone else for the role when there have been other things that have done it successfully?

Oh, and for the love of God, the Kojima hatred based on a voice actor change can go do one. I'm sick of it, and quite frankly, if you don't like the change, then either deal with it, or leave. I'm sick of it, and I'm sure Kojima and Hayter are sick of it also. In fact, we already know Hayter is, given that Tweet.

Avatar image for hystavito

<< LINK REMOVED >> I'm not a big MGS fan so I have no loyalty to past actors. However, I usually don't like highly familiar or distinct sounding Hollywood talent for voice acting because my mind always pictures that person when I hear their voice. That can work out fine or even very well when the character has been designed specifically for the voice actor, like in some animated movies, but in the case of MGS it's probably going to have a somewhat jarring disconnecting effect.

Avatar image for Hellhound30x

Kojima << LINK REMOVED >> that, "It's a new type of Metal Gear game and we wanted to have this reflected in the voice actor as well."

Avatar image for Xcalibur_basic

<< LINK REMOVED >> I think it may have something to do with the casual gamer or American community in general being confused that Big Boss is not the same as Solid Snake. Remember that dilemma with the character Quiet and how the way she was dressed caused an uproar. Then all these so-called fans came out and blasted Kojima for it? Most were just casual gamers of the series and had no idea the way Kojima puts effort into characters and story. In short, casual gamers unfamiliar with the series backstory would be confused.

Avatar image for PlatinumPaladin

Still not buying it. This is a product of Kojima after-all.

Avatar image for blackace

Meh don't care. If I ever decided to buy MGS 5: PP it won't be until the game is well uner $30. Hideo can suck it. When is he ever going to make a new IP? I would love to see a Snatcher sequel or something completely different from him.

Avatar image for DanielL5583

<< LINK REMOVED >> Snatcher hasn't really done well commercially, or Policenauts, or Boktai...hell, Zone of the Enders is the only other thing Kojima's made that's actually even remotely commercially viable, though considering the rarity of ZoE2, that likely isn't going to happen.

Avatar image for Xcalibur_basic

<< LINK REMOVED >> He wanted to leave or at least pass the torch to a new director/group in the past because he wanted to work on other projects. Everyone was just too afraid they would screw up the metal gear series so they pleaded (probably begged) him to remain as director. The games he puts out are few because his games aren't even given a release date until he is confident it will be finished.
