At the 2010 EA Studio Showcase, Maxis lifted the veil on its latest project, Darkspore. The action role-playing game is an entirely new entry in the series, and now, it has spawned a release date.

Darkspore arrives on April Fools' Day in Europe. Hopefully EA isn't joking.

According to a message posted on the Darkspore forums by Maxis' community manager, Darkspore will be released in North America on March 29, followed by an April 1 premiere in Europe.

Maxis is currently soliciting beta applicants for Darkspore, and those interested in sampling the title prerelease can sign up at the beta program page.

For more on the game--which meshes character creation with Diablo-style hack-and-slash action--check out GameSpot's hands-on preview, as well as coverage of the hour-long Darkspore Comic-Con panel from July. At the panel, Maxis designers spoke at length about the title and explained, "This is not a sequel to Spore. It's not an expansion pack. It's a brand-new game."
