As the leak detailed, the game will also be available for free to those that digital pre-order Dark Souls 3 on the console. This pre-order bonus is available "for a limited time."

It is unclear whether the free copy of Dark Souls given to pre-order customers is just the base game, or if it includes the Artorias of the Abyss DLC.

Dark Souls 3 launches on April 12 for PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC. Series creator Hidetaka Miyazaki previously indicated he wants to wrap up the Souls saga with this game.

Having been promoted to chief executive of From Software, Miyazaki said he believes the studio needs to aggressively pursue new ideas. You can read GameSpot's full Dark Souls 3 interview with Miyazaki here.

On February 6, Rockstar Games' Red Dead Redemption became available to download and play on Xbox One, indicating it would be officially added to the backwards compatibility library. Microsoft quickly removed the ability to acquire the game and said it was mistakenly made available.

"Microsoft tests all Xbox 360 games with our [backwards compatibility] emulator to ensure a quality experience across a breadth of titles," said Microsoft's Larry "Major Nelson" Hryb. "Due to an error, some of the games currently in test were accidentally made available. We have since removed access to those games, and apologize for any confusion this may have caused. We will have more information on upcoming releases soon."

With Dark Souls now having been confirmed, a Red Dead Redemption announcement may be on the way soon too.

after playing dark souls on PC i cant go back to the console version . . . still an amazing game though

@uchihasilver: You mean you can't go back to the version that can actually be played without installing a mod to fix its frame rate drops or using a different input method because KB/M is unusable? Are you serious?

Avatar image for uchihasilver

@chaosmagicka: OH NOES!!! man people like you greatly over-exaggerate these things it literally takes less than 2 minutes to install and set up DSFix and so what I have to use a controller? majority of pc players will own a controller but hey better resolution and frame rate must not be a good trade off for 2 minutes work right?

Excellent! I never did finish that speed-based build that was so much fun... And frankly I rarely fire up the 360 anymore (although I converted it to a SWEET mobile-on-a-tray setup).

As with others below, let's hope they add BC to the original Dark Souls 2 as well.

I wish I could play the original Dark Souls 2... The Scholar of the First Sin is excruciatingly annoying for someone who is new. Does anyone know if they took away leisurely grinding in this version? Enemies disappear after killing them "X" amount of times? Or was this always a staple for the Souls series? Its just TOO punishing to the point where I don't feel accomplished after anything. Just a relief from the annoyance.

@obsidian_born: Yes, they stupidly made the front end of SotFS very offputting for new players. Souls gameplay doesn't handle multiple targets all that great in the first place, but they went and made a ton of gang fights right off the bat anyways. The dumber part though, in the later half they actually removed a lot of the difficult fights and is pretty much a cakewalk in comparison to plain DS2 at times (relatively speaking).

As for the vanishing enemies thing, that was just in 2/SotFS, not 1. You could join the Champions/hardmode covenant and they'll stay, but doesn't sound like something you'd want to do :)

@Sir_Meowcat_Esq:

No I would want them to stay. I am glad you told me where do I join?

@obsidian_born: In Majula, left of the huge obelisk that tells you the total deaths there is a path leading up to a statue with some homeward bones nearby. Interact with the statue to join.

It would be cool if Rockstar remastered Read Dead Redimtion. Free if you have it digitally or discounted. 40 bucks if you are new.

Avatar image for chaosmagicka

@freeryu: That would not happen. They would never give it away free if they remastered.

I was just about to pick this game up on PS3 (beat it along time ago on the 360). Still might due to wanting the collectors edition of DS III on my X1. Plus the reason I finally got a PS3 was for the classics I never did play such as Demon Souls (and the last of us OMG what a game but don't get why the fuss over uncharted, I cant get into them) which got me missing the original Dark Souls. I have DS2 on my X1 which I was on my 10th playthrough at least and my save got corrupted on my 360....it made it hard to start over again after so many hours but that didn't mean i never wanted to try again. I am basically collecting all of my favorite RPGs...As with any souls game though, you have to turn off every other game and just go for it. I need to play through Demon Souls though....I have only made it past the first boss and stuck on the bridge. Decisions decisions....

Avatar image for jagdedge124

@wolvklaw:

Yep. That happened to me with DS 2. Very close to finishing the game, i lost my whole save got corrupted on 360. I had to scream, and just refused to pick it up again. However, a couple months later, i started again and beat it, but NEVER was i going to get that again on One, and never did.

Anyway, it wasn't as good as DS 1. The movement was too sensitive, and fast. You didn't feel that "weigh down" by your armor, and in fact, DS1 had the best armor. It's a great game, and i have little faith DS3 is going to be any better. Looking forward to getting back on DS1 though.

@jagdedge124: I had fun at first with DS2, but loosing that save killed it for me. There were things I didn't like such as Spells being based on use not MP and how you could grind a place out. I know that has been changed with DS3. I am hoping that since this is "supposed" to be the last in the souls series it takes the magic from all they have learned and combine it together. I have faith in it. But you are right there was a magic to DS1 that was unbeatable. Before alot of the patches DS2 did have it and I had alot of fun. But they made spells have less uses and that final crutch of loosing my save when I had put in so many hours....was murder for me. I have it for the X1, got it as a digital deal. I have tried to go through it again but I haven't been able to sink my teeth into it. I want to play the original again and like I said I just now got a PS3 at a deal and the first game I picked up was Demon Souls which reminds me of the first. But the hardest part about any souls game is the start. Learning your way around, getting more powerful and staying alive. I don't have a PS4 and can't speak about Blood bourne yet, although I will get one at some point for that game and the Last of Us 2. The only two games that spark my interest in the PS4 at this point. I know alot has been fixed in DS3, if you plan on getting it throw me a friend request my gamertag is Wolvklaw. It would be nice to have a buddy to play it with who knows their way around.

@bluefox755: good for those who have it on 360 too as you can now play it on your X`1 without needing your 360

Avatar image for bluefox755

@civilenginerd: I dunno, if it were me, I'd rather pop in my copy of Dark Souls on 360 and just play than messing with the X1, spending the time downloading a digital copy, unnecessarily clogging up my hard drive, when I can just pop it in my 360 and play it. To each their own though.

@bluefox755: Huh ? You made no sense if you're worrying about space wouldn't you install and play it on your xbox one instead of 360 and make more room for your 360 hdd or unless you got really slow internet because 360 are between 1-10gb.

Avatar image for jagdedge124

Hm. Good idea. I might have to get back on that. Best one out of all of them. I beat the game, but i never beat Artoria of the Abyss. That dragon wiping me out everytime, and nobody plays to help out.

Maybe bringing it to BC will get more people playing. Not like there's anything out there now. Only promising game i'm seeing is that WW2 game out mid next year.

Avatar image for jagdedge124

@Zicoroen:

Thanks bud. You're a gentleman. We'll see what happens when it goes BC, if the community comes back and plays again. That was always the great thing about DS. You have the most despicable people looking to rob you of everything, and than you have the Knight in Shining Armor types that help people. I've been in those positions, where i got messages thanking me a million, and i've been in positions so helpless, i was almost like a beggar lol. Great game.

Dark Souls and Bloodborne are great games. I haven't played Dark Souls 2, though, because I heard that game was a huge disappointment. I'll just skip it and wait for Dark Souls 3 instead.

Avatar image for cainetao11

@cboye18: I've heard DS2 isn't as good as first but never that it was a huge disappointment. A huge disappointment was the Order 1886. Something that scores 5/10 Imo.

Avatar image for donmega1
donmega1

@cboye18: its not as good as dark souls but its not even close to a disappointment. Dark souls really pushed the hardware limits of the consoles and this one feels more like the original gears or war vs gears of war 2. If you know what im sayin.

Avatar image for deactivated-58ce94803a170

@cboye18: Dark Souls 2 is still very good. Its just after you play Dark Souls, its a been there done that kinda thing.

Avatar image for PrpleTrtleBuBum
PrpleTrtleBuBum

@mesome713: It worked the other way around too. I played DS2 first and then I started the original a bit, but after spending so much time grinding DS2 I just wasn't interested in more of the same.

Probably a sign of me getting old. In the time of Crash Bandicoot, Medievil, Metal Gear, Halo, Splinter Cell it was exactly the same but I still played them all 100%, multiple times. These days repetive sequels (or in DS's case sort-of-prequels) turn me off almost instantly

Avatar image for cboye18
cboye18

@PrpleTrtleBuBum: Yeah same thing for me I guess; just can't get into sequels that play the same too much anymore unless a long time has past. Fatigue creeps in much faster in comparison to when I was younger.

Avatar image for cboye18
cboye18

@mesome713: Well the thing that kinda threw me off was the variation in boss design. Most of them were knights or humanoids which seems so uninspiring to battle. I just hope Dark Souls 3 won't make the same mistake.

Avatar image for deactivated-58ce94803a170

@cboye18: Yeah im not so sure. Its shouldnt be so bad either. They would have to really change it up for many to feel its a better game then first playing Dark Souls. Those first impressions are strong.
