Now Playing: GS News Update: Dark Souls Remastered For PS4, PC, Xbox One, And Switch Announced

GameSpot may get a commission from retail offers.

Bandai Namco has confirmed that Dark Souls Remastered is being released for PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC on May 25. This is in addition to the Nintendo Switch version of Dark Souls Remastered revealed during the surprise Direct event. According to a press release, Dark Souls Remastered is being developed by From Software, the studio behind the original trilogy, instead of being outsourced to a third-party studio.

"Experience the rich world of Dark Souls in upscaled 4K resolution with 60FPS when playing on a PlayStation 4 Pro system, Xbox One X, and PC," reads the press release. "Also, 1080p resolution with 30FPS is available when playing the game on Nintendo Switch with its TV mode."

"From their first timid steps to absolute mastery, players will build their characters by strategically adapting to daunting foes, exploring haunting locations, and amassing a large collection of weapons, armour and magic spells to utilise for a truly unique playstyle."

Dark Souls Remastered will also support "up to six players" for online multiplayer. A Dark Souls Trilogy box has been announced for PlayStation 4 in Japan. It features Dark Souls Remastered, Dark Souls 2: Scholar of the First Sin, Dark Souls 3: The Fire Fades Edition. Additionally, it will have soundtracks for each of the games, knight and bonfire bookends, an encyclopedia, and a special art set. As of yet this has not been announced for other regions.

At this point, developer From Software's Dark Souls doesn't need much explaining. It's a beloved, influential game that is critically acclaimed and has a fanbase as passionate about it today as they were when it originally launched in. These people have been calling out for a remaster of the game, especially considering that the original version had a number of glaring technical faults.

In GameSpot's original Dark Souls review Kevin VanOrd awarded it a 9.5/10, describing it as "riveting."

"Dark Souls requires intense focus," he said. "This isn't a lighthearted romp in a bright and colorful fantasy world; it's a methodical journey into the frightening unknown. And that's what makes it so riveting. Some games try to scare you with bump-in-the-night shocks and far-off howls, but Dark Souls doesn't require such predictable methods of terror. Its terrors emanate from its very core, each step bringing you closer to another inevitable death.

"How amazing that such a terrible place could be so inviting. The game's world is so memorable, and its action so thrilling, that it might invade your thoughts even when you aren't playing, silently urging you to escape the real world and return to this far more treacherous one. Dark Souls doesn't just surpass other dungeon crawlers; it skewers them with a razor-sharp halberd and leaves behind their soulless corpses."

These remasters are usually worthless like Skyrim for another 60$ and it still doesn't look as good as people made it look for PC a year or 2 after it came out. For years you could play dark souls on PC with good high resolution and framerate unlock mods. Remade games are when anything actually changes like the Shadows of the Colossus Remake, though they could have added in some Colossi for more reason to play again.

I only just bought this game again on PC (after having it on the 360). I don't think I'll be rushing out to buy this version. Tired of remasters to an extent, although I do enjoy them for certain games.

Can you imagine how nasty blightown will look without that tedious frameskipping.

I am SO tired of remasters pushing back new titles. Don't get me wrong, I think updating old games has a place, but FFS, dedicate a department of development to rewriting these (mostly) complete games, instead of pulling away devs from new IPs or long-promised sequels. It's not like you have to rewrite the entire plot and logic tree of the game, or come up with entirely new design elements. The original makes a great guide for new models and dialogue, already. Just have the newbies at the company slog through it: it'd be a great test of their work ethic to see what kind of work they will do on altogether new games.

On a lighter note, if you wanna go back further than Demon's Souls, the King's Field series was an earlier precursor to the Souls games, with many similar elements, though admittedly in a much simpler form. Bonus points for ASCII Entertainment and From Software including some of the names of the series' fans in the 3rd US release. Look for me and kill me. I'm the only NPC you can, without negative consequences. I am the original undying soul, reincarnated everytime someone fires up The Ancient City on their PS2 :P

Reading the comments it seems people actually excited for another game (demon's soul) than the dark souls remaster lol.

@sakaixx: There are always those people who think the first one is always the best, no matter how much better the newer ones actually are.

But it's also subjective matter, so each for their own. I personally think Dark Souls improved on all fronts compared to Demon's Souls. I can't find a single gameplay element that is actually better in Demon's Souls.

@groowagon: Demons souls game is much more gloomier than any of the Dark Souls game which is what I liked about Demons Souls. All souls games are great nevertheless.

@groowagon: It was the first to bring the gameplay, the mystery the excitement, the originality. It was way harder than any other souls game. 2 was actually kinda easy in comparison.

@groowagon: its actually because of the world setting. Demon souls world building is much better than dark souls personally. The nexus in demon souls also felt like home. Well hope this remaster does well, well enough for sony to issue a remaster...

I bet sony just want to wait for ps5 before remastering the game..

@sakaixx: I would absolutely love to see a Demon's Souls remaster but I am ecstatic that Dark Souls is being done. It was my first Souls game and I think it deserves a remaster more, at least from a technical perspective. DaS1 was probably the least polished entry of the series.

Avatar image for deactivated-5bda06edf37ee

@decadentdescent: Actually, if you look at it from the technical perspective alone, Demon's Souls is much, much crappier than Dark Souls. Demon's Souls looks like an early test version of Dark Souls.

@groowagon: What a load of crap!

@groowagon: form a technical prospective, there were way more bugs in the other versions. wait man, did you really play the game?

@wr3ckloose_: way more bugs in Dark Souls? wtf man? did YOU really play the game?

I hope they make the movements and animations as fluid as Dark Souls 3 and Bloodborne. It would make Ornstein and Smoughs gank fight along with Kalameet 1,000,000 times less stressful lol.

Avatar image for decadentdescent
DecadentDescent

@sonypony4eva: Well if they were to do so, they would have to change the enemy and boss animations as well. It wouldn't be DS3 maneuverability against DS1 enemy movement.

@monkey_shines: I’ve beaten all of the Souls games including Bloodborne multiple times, but the Combat engine/system of Dark Souls 1 ,2, and Demon Souls are extremely slow and outdated. The games are awesome, but the movements and animations haven’t aged well. Dark Souls 3 and Bloodborne revived the franchise with their fast paced game engines. Ornstein and Smough aren’t hard since you only need to strafe around them, but it’s sooooooooo slow.

Arguably the greatest game ever made. It was released ~3 weeks before Skyrim but it's legacy will live on much longer for me.

Stop re-releasing games if they already look good in their original format.

@Jag-T1000: Dark Souls was beautifully designed but nobody ever thought it was graphically stunning. Besides, the online in the original is almost dead right now. I'm stoked to have a screen full of summon signs again and have a 6 player rumble in the forest. Oh and to play blighttown at more than 10fps.

@Jag-T1000: Didn't you read the article? You think adding 6 players online and dedicated servers not worth a remaster? Who knows what else. Maybe they will fix some of the issues that broke certain covenants. I am looking at you Gravelord covenant, you are supposed to award humanity for killing a servant not an eye of death.

Just confirmed that owners of Dark Souls on Steam won't be getting a discount. Skyrim and Bioshock offered free upgrades, not expecting it for free but a discount would be nice. Thanks Fromsoft and Bandai.
