Dark Souls Remastered On PS4 Pro: Watch 30 Minutes Of Gameplay

GameSpot may receive revenue from affiliate and advertising partnerships for sharing this content and from purchases through links.

See how the upcoming remaster looks on modern hardware.

From Software's brutally challenging RPG Dark Souls was one of the most acclaimed and influential titles of the last generation, and soon a new audience will have a chance to experience it courtesy of Dark Souls Remastered. The upcoming remaster is scheduled to release this May on PS4, Xbox One, Switch, and PC, giving players a chance to revisit the world of Lordran with improved visuals and framerate.

Dark Souls was already a beautiful game when it originally released in 2011, but the upcoming remastered version looks even better, particularly when played on a PS4 Pro or Xbox One X. Like many other contemporary titles, the game is tailored to take advantage of the added horsepower from Sony and Microsoft's new consoles, supporting 4K resolution and 60 FPS.

Now Playing: Dark Souls Remastered - PS4 Pro Gameplay

We recently got a chance to see just how Dark Souls looks and performs on modern hardware. In the video above, you can watch us play through the opening portion of Dark Souls Remastered, running through the first 30 minutes of the game on a PS4 Pro.

While the Switch version isn't quite as visually impressive, it still likewise receives a nice boost over the original game, running in 1080p at 30 FPS when docked. It will also release alongside an exclusive Amiibo figure that allows you to perform the famous "praise the sun" emote when scanned. Switch owners will have a chance to try Dark Souls Remastered out a little early through a network test beta, which will be held sometime ahead of the game's release.

Dark Souls Remastered launches for PS4, Xbox One, PC, and Switch on May 25. In GameSpot's original Dark Souls review, critic Kevin VanOrd called the title "riveting" and awarded it a 9.5/10. "Dark Souls plays by its own rules, and in doing so, provides an unforgettable adventure that seeps into your being and invades your thoughts," he wrote.

You people are just NEVER satisfied....you've all been asking for a "remastered" version of this game; you finally get it (and are now able to play the game on your PS4) and still complain about it. There is a difference between the terms "remaster" and "remake". This is a "remaster" and, despite the DS Fix mod on the PC, it still looks better than the original PS3 version. I could understand the disappointment if this was a "remake"; but it's not.

@chillingnaire: so just don't buy it then. Why people pay for a remaster of a game they've already played is beyond my comprehension to begin with (unless you no longer have access to play the original). But had they changed the graphics, people would be on here bitching how they wished it looked more like the original. The developers just can't win because people will bitch and complain no matter what.

@illnova1979:

It does look better. No question about that. I guess for me personally though, I was expecting it to look MORE better than it does to justify a brand new purchase.

I don't think it's unfair to observe that some folks (myself included) were hoping for a bigger graphical improvement on the original than what is being shown here to make the case for a second purchase.

I hate to use a term that might cause people to explode but this kinda looks...I dunno...a little "incremental" of an update rather than a real game changer.

@BeefoTheBold: The game is also $40 new, and with 20% off new game purchases from various retailers, that puts it at $32.

@chubby170: Let's hope at least PS5 is backwards compatible with PS4. Otherwise PS will start looking like one sad joke.

@ChrisAnetkaC: Yes sir!

I have purchased every Sony system since PS1 (minus handhelds), and the rest at launch since PS2. Every system has been backwards compatible at the start (PS3 changed that with newer models).

If the PS5 is not backwards compatible, I will really have to think of what gaming system I want in the future..

Modded old version still looks better. Well let's see if this gonna get proper mod support too, then we can start playing it again.

Would have expected a modernized UI at the very least (grid-based inventory, equipment condition outside of menus)... I was hoping for DS2-style cloth physics...

Man, this is disappointing.

What is the new Sony console they're talking about here? Has PS5 come out then?

@ChrisAnetkaC: Why you calling out just Sony?? It specifies both Sony and Microsoft. Also PS4 Pro and Xbox One X are classified as NEW consoles technically since their the last console versions the two companies made.

@DarkCaptain3: X1X can be called "new" but 1.5 years in IT is about middle age my friend. The Pro isn't even a console - it's a patch you can touch. Let's not kid ourselves.

@ChrisAnetkaC: The Xbox One X isn't any different really, both it and the pro are just 4k versions of their original versions. I have both consoles myself and I'm not sure why one console seems to always get hated by people from the others. It seems stupid and detrimental.

They should have shown footage earlier. They got everyone's hopes up with a graphical improvement. It's weaker than DS1 on PC with DSfix. Now all my hype is gone. What incentive do I have to buy and play this if I already have a version that runs at 1080p/60fps?

@archlvt: There is no incentive for you. Not sure why you were looking forward to this to begin with. Judging by every remaster they make for consoles, not sure where the high expectations came from. It would've been awesome to have a "remake" but for people like me who don't own a pc and don't have a PS3 anymore, it's the best thing ever.

@archlvt: Convenience, reinvigorated playerbase, rock-solid performance. Other than that, it does not appear to be worth $40. Maybe get it for cheaper on a Steam sale or something I dunno.

Is that all ? This looks almost exactly like the PC version. In fact, the original game on PC with mods like DSfix looks A LOT better. This should be a free update to all owners of the original Dark Souls 1. Can't believe they're charging 40 dollars for this...

@speed45823: While I agree that this does not appear to be worth the $40 they are asking, the changes are noticeable. The textures for many parts do seem much higher res and there are some lighting changes that appear to add at least one effect that I see that I don't think can be done through mods. Also, there were limits on how many textures could be modded in the PC version of the original as well as it adding lots of stuttering because it had to use a weird work around to mod in the textures. This version will most likely be free of those issues.

I did notice though that it does not appear to have as good of ambient occlusion that the PC can have added to it so this version may have improvements in some areas and downgrades in others... but if this new remastered version could have those mods added in as well then it will probably be the superior version ultimately.

This is just gamer porn at this point... If you played on PS3 or 360, the extra FPS are critical in this version.

I.e., if you love Souls and have the spare capital, you're buying it day 1.

Is it just me, or has this player never played against the Asylum Demon or its ilk?

@wexorian: New PC version is native 4K 60FPS. The video above was not recorded at 4K, streamed at 4K, nor is it the PC version. It's the lowest of the current 3 usable options.

@se7enxx89xx: I can play ds2 on my pc at 4k 60fps, and the first game too with dsfix, and it looks better than this video, only problem is the original is single threaded, so there are huge drops in some places. Was really hyped for this one, but not anymore, I'll pass.

@DeathCrusher91: If memory is correct (and according to like everyone who does streaming), youtube actually lowers the quality of EVERYTHING put on it. This especially has been true with games such as Subnautica and all where you can actually tell the difference when you have the game on the highest setting yourself and then compare it to a youtube version that you've made thats recording it. Youtube itself lowers the quality of all video's, that could be what you are seeing here since these video's we are seeing are coming from youtube.

Yikes. Perfect illustration of why no games and movies justify HD technology. Perfect illustration of how there just aren't enough games on modern systems that are worth getting. This game needs a graphics overhaul if it's to be ported onto the PS4, nevermind the Pro!
