Dark Souls III is Faster, Smoother, and More Fluid Than its Predecessors

Still as cruel and foreboding as ever.

My footsteps echo down down the hallway of these castle ruins, and all is quiet while I step into the shadows. But then it's there, snarling and vicious, leaping at me with fangs bared. I roll aside just in time, spinning around for a counterattack. And then they come from behind--four gruesome, twisted figures with long limbs and drooping skin. My stamina recharges quickly, but my frantic dodges are limited in this cramped space, and the creatures finish me in seconds.

This is Dark Souls III. It's faster and more streamlined than its predecessors, but still brutal enough to kill me without warning. It requires more patience and defense than Bloodborne does, but borrows from it as well; From Software is taking cues from its newest franchise in more ways than one.

"Dark Souls and Bloodborne are two separate franchises, but both have [Hidetaka] Miyazaki-san’s personal touch," producer Brandon Williams says. "One thing that people are already noticing is the faster speed at which combat and action in Dark Souls III moves. It’s a bit faster than previous Dark Souls games but not as fast as Bloodborne. I’d say it’s just right."

This speed is apparent right away. In true Dark Souls fashion, the demo begins at a bonfire, and this is the only respite form the dangers below. I descend a nearby staircase and confront two hellhounds, both of which pounce on me with alarming agility. In earlier Dark Souls titles, I might have raised my shield in defense. But because of my time spent with Bloodborne this year, I opt to dodge between the beasts, splitting the difference as they pass right over me.

The roll in Dark Souls III isn't as quick and shifty as the sidestepping in Bloodborne, but it is more responsive than the dodge in Dark Souls II. Stamina is also less of a problem here than it used to be, but if I'm not careful, I can still exhaust my character, leaving him defenseless against the monsters all around me.

If I do conserve my stamina, there are new options for me this time around. As a Dark Souls veteran, I appreciate any new tools I can use against my powerful foes, however rare they might be. And with Dark Souls III, From Software is implementing a feature called Arts.

Much like Trick Weapon transformations in Bloodborne, Arts abilities let me explore alternate attacks without switching items. For instance, with my starting weapon--a longsword--I can add two more attacks to my move set. One is a wide swipe, while the second, more powerful strike propels me forward with a heaving thrust. There's a windup period, and timing it so I avoid damage in the process is tricky. But then again--Dark Souls always is.

"One of the things Miyazaki-san and the team at From Software is trying to do is make Dark Souls III a smooth/seamless experience, without lowering the difficultly; and the new weapons, Battle Arts, character builds will play into that," Williams says. "The heart of Dark Souls will not change, but the team believes that expanding the way weapons can be used will be an important and welcome evolution of the Souls formula."

These Arts are limited to 20 uses between bonfires, so conserving them for tougher enemies is paramount to survival. Toward the end of the demo, in a grassy courtyard surrounding a chapel, I find two knights. They're patrolling the entrance to the looming structure, and as soon as I engage them, their long javelins pin me into a corner, where I can only raise my shield, hoping for a chance to escape. I fight back, but my basic attacks aren't enough to repel the warriors.

I die again, and return to my bonfire, with all 20 Arts at my disposal. The next time, I eliminate the two guards, with both Arts abilities and Estus (health) flasks to spare.

A cutscene triggers, and then, from the dim spires of the chapel ceiling, the boss drops. It's a contorted, towering beast, with long hair and massive blades in each hand. It lunges at me, and dodging its attacks means deciphering its odd spinning technique. This isn't easy, and I die several times before doing real damage to it.

But after resurrecting, the level design facilitates quick access back to the boss, if you know where to go. There are shortcuts behind hidden doors, branching paths that loop back on themselves, and a verticality that's been largely missing since the first Dark Souls. The condensed level design is reminiscent of Bloodborne, but the medieval structures and foreboding dungeons remind me of Dark Souls more than ever.

No Caption Provided

The next time I return to the boss, I stay close to its body, where its swipes can't hit me. By dodging its attacks, and using a massive uppercut Arts ability with my great sword, I finish it off, and absorb the souls from its dead husk.

"With Dark Souls III, we are trying to bring the best aspects of Dark Souls I and II together to create an amazing, truly new Dark Souls experience," Williams says. "The team is exploring ways to bring more players into the franchise, such as increasing the game speed and expanding weapon capabilities, but the characteristic difficulty of the franchise will remain intact."

From what I played, Dark Souls III does feel more accessible than earlier franchise installments. And that's not necessarily a bad thing. It's intuitive and smooth, with tight controls and more abilities than ever before. And based on the difficulty of the demo, I'll need every option I can get.

I haven't played a Souls game yet but I'm knee deep in Bloodborne. I've grown to love the challenge but I'll admit that those early days were extremely frustrating and I didn't know what the hell I was doing. DS3 looks great and if it plays anything like BB I'm in!

@skrilla99: I loved Demon so I bought DS1 back in the day, played it for 10 hours and got so pissed I sold it- bought Skyrim- played the shit out of that. Then 2 years later picked up the greatest hits DS1- got really into it and wondered what the hell I was thinking 2 years ago, lol.

@skrilla99: Thats how its supposed to be! The pain turns to pleasure. Darks souls is quite a bit better than BB, not to say BB is a bad game in any respect. Try out dark souls 1 & 2, the graphics arent quite as pretty as BB, but theres no way you won't enjoy it considering you enjoy BB.

I never played the games but my brother loves them. The trailer at Microsoft's gamescom showing really wowed me and I think I may jump in on this entry.

Glad the combat is getting faster and more responsive. I hate how sluggish the combat is in Demon Souls and Dark Souls 2. Oddly enough, I didn't mind it so much in Dark Souls 1.

@seven7swords: I'm 50/50 on it, I'm worried that the faster response and battle speed might translate into shorter less memorable fights, or even just easier game play. I hope they are doing it to improve the gaming experience VS catering to peoples complaints. It could get irritating in previous titles, but a little anger is good in a game. Just like sex.

@gregyeah3: "A little anger is good in a game" absolute most retarded statement I have ever heard in my life. A game is created to have fun with, if you get mad with it the developer have failed their job. You people are masochist, not gamers,

@datownywitcher: You have never enjoyed a game where you became even a little frustrated? That seems like bull to me. I don't think theres a game alive that doesn't have some sort of frustrating aspect to it. I think you may be misinterpreting what I mean when I say that. I speak of those "awww damnit!" moments that all games have.

edit: I mean I guess I could see the lack of appeal in the dark souls series for people who have anger problems, like bi-polar people... and unfortunately spoiled brats. I had a friend that used to throw the controller at the $1200 Flatscreen his parents bought him when he got pissed at a game. when xbox 360 first came out..and flatscreens were much more expensive than they are today. He eventually broke the TV, and his parents promptly bought him a new one. Pretty sad,

@seven7swords: I'm guessing it's because the trickier weapons that required more planning to use in DS were also generally more powerful to make up for it. Not so much in DS2 where weapon power became generally uniform after a certain patch.

Try playing DS2 without any of the updates when many of the spells and weapons were "unbalanced". No online, true, but it's a little more interesting when you know some weapons are worth your time more than others. Part of the fun, at least for me, is having a weapon in mind and then going for it before you're supposed to. When every weapon is kind of the same...yeah, not so much fun.

@Barighm: Too true! One of my favorite aspects of DS1 is assembling various "kits", and using the widely varied styles that each kit offered. HUGE variety in weapon & damage types, indeed...

@deathstream: this is only a problem if the game is bad. Consider that the company is growing, they are gaining profits and resources, which allows them to produce more games at a higher quality. That can be scary - true, but it would be dishonest to say the company only cares about money. If that were the case they would make it much easier. Money is what ruined CoD and assassins creed. In this case, it might actually benefit the gamers. Time will tell.

@deathstream: Still better than CoD. At least every Dark Souls game has new maps and traps to learn, usually a bunch of new enemies, and some unique bosses. CoD? No matter what changes they make to the game, you will always be shooting some dude in the face with the same rifles, shotguns, and SMGs in roughly the same map set-up. For a game like Dark Souls, I can think of a few concepts they haven't done yet.

@Barighm: I respectfully disagree. I LOVED Demon's Souls but have been less impressed with each subsequent game. Bloodborne shook up the formula a little and now they are adding those changes to Dark Souls (despite laughable referring to them as different franchises).

Yearly, or near yearly releases almost always mean bad things for consumers, be it CoD, AC, DS, or Madden.

@deathstream: I'm with you on caution for annual releases, but that's really not the case here.

Demon Souls launched in 2009.

Dark Souls (1) - a new franchise - in 2011

Dark Souls II in 2014, so 3 years between sequels and was done under different direction that 1.

Bloodborne in 2015, but was in development for 3 years prior by the director of Dark Souls (I)

And now Dark Souls III planned for 2016

So the closest two releases within a franchise are minimum two years.

@MTLevan: Exactly. They're not rushing the games. It's all because they wanted to make a new ip with Sony that they decided to create a sequal to DS with a different director and team to not let the fans waiting for 5 years, so Bloodborne and DS 2 were developed at the same time by different teams (sadly this was a mistake since DS2 was not as good imo).

@kianhatef: funny thing is, I would rather play a lesser of the souls games, than 95% of the other games out there! I compare all games to souls games and all those games lose every time! Don't get me wrong, there are a lot of good games out there, just none that come close, IMO that is! Good gaming to all!

@rimbrocop: BB's PVE is tops, but its PVP is bottoms.

DkS1 & SOTFS are tied for first. Then Demon's as a close third, and BB in a distant last place. Vanilla DkS2 is actually last, but SOTFS fixed so much that it bumps to the top. The truth. BB's problems seem too core to the game's mechanics to be fixed, but I could be wrong.

@plaintomato: And because PVP in Bloodborne is not as good you give it a distant last place? For me the PVE in Bloodborne is so good, it's a tie with DS1. I love the more patience approach from the Souls games, but the more fast paced combat in Bloodborne is great! Also I eventually played every Souls game after my first playthrough without a shield anyway because I love dodging more that blocking. So for PVE:

DS1 and Bloodborne > Demon's > DS2 in a distant place (no matter if it's vanilla or SOTFS, it just isn't a good souls game)

for PVP it's a different story.

I've played all the Souls games including Bloodborne and really liked each of them, but to me Dark Souls 1 was the best. I would rather the combat be slower and more deliberate than fast.

It'll be great no matter what but I hope it;s most like the original Dark Souls.

The first thing I noticed from the trailers is the enemy bosses...most are humanoids/knights. Please don't make the same mistake as Dark Souls 2.
