Dark Souls Creator Planning to Launch "Several New Projects"

Hidetaka Miyazaki also discusses sci-fi Dark Souls.

Dark Souls 3 is the "turning point" in the franchise and will pave the way for something new, according to series creator Hidetaka Miyazaki.

Speaking in an interview with GameSpot, Miyazaki was asked if he has given any thought to expanding the Souls series beyond fantasy and into other genres such as sci-fi.

"Dark Souls is my life’s work," he replied. "Everything I came up with for Dark Souls 3 is based on my personal preferences. However, Dark Souls 3 is also actually the turning point for the franchise."

Pressed on whether he would explore the sci-fi or mech genres, perhaps by applying the Souls framework to them, Miyazaki said he "definitely wants to bring the Miyazaki Touch" to them.

Miyazaki, who previously served in directorial and design capacities on Demon's Souls, Dark Souls, and Bloodborne, was appointed president of developer From Software in May 2014.

As part of his remit as president, Miyazaki intends to launch "several new projects," but didn't specify what these would be.

"I do want to work on something new," he added. "I’m pleased to hear people are interested in seeing that."

Dark Souls 3 is scheduled to launch in early 2016 for Xbox One, PlayStation 4, and PC.

The Dark Souls franchise has now shipped around 8.5 million copies across its previous instalments. This figure does not include sales of From Software's other popular games, Demon's Souls and Bloodborne.

Take a look at some screenshots from Dark Souls 3 below.

@blackamerica: What exactly is the reason? If it's the slow combat, like evarin said, Bloodborne is a great starting point. If it's the difficulty, you can summon people to help, and if it's still too difficult for you, then the series just isn't for you.

@blackamerica: A good starting point, especially if you can't get into the Souls games, is Bloodborne. The faster pace will make it more engaging if the slow, careful style of the main series didn't appeal to you.

This whole Dark Souls pop phenomenon is a bit scary.
It will be its own enemy, due to its popularity.

I'm afraid it will be going mainstream.

On the other hand, Demon's Souls and Dark Sould I&II were top notch games.

If they can deliver this kind of quality without going too mainstream to please everybody, I'll be happy.

@xolivierx: what's wrong with more people knowing about the game? Seriously. The games will still be great because Miyazaki is a genius designer.

@masterkushh: agree! Demons Souls was the best.... and also inovative. Sequels are good but they started looking for their pockets. People need to know about Souls but still fear it for what it has to deliver... a persistent punishing game.... but after tooo many sequels this feeling has gone...

I always thought that the Souls games would be perfect for a Castlevania license.

@TheLeftHandDoom: Yeah, but Bloodborne already does Castlevania better than Castlevania could ever do Castlevania, if you know what I mean. Plus Castlevania = Gone forever because of Konami and Pachinko.

@jdlok: BB will never beat Castlevania as they are two very different games, BB at it's best is just another ticket to a dark souls games which is the only reason it sold so well apart form the lack games on the ps4 at that time.

@Leonagard: Why do indie games not count? Sure they don't have as much content, but they are priced accordingly. Ori and the Blind Forest, Rocket League, Transistor, and Shovel Knight are some of the best games of the generation. I don't get why people want to use the word indie in a negative way. It just means they don't have the constraints of a publisher.

@zeldafan195: Indies are the only ones that counts right now thats the problem for me... they have been released on pc a loooong time ago many of them... and I have all on Steam even on ps3... why should I care about them on PS4?... see psplus offer this month... Tomb Rider - Temple of Osiris... Limbo.... maybe in 2017-18 we will get this gen started... So Bloodborne became the best game avaliable this year before witcher 3 mainstream appeared... I know ppl that bought BB and cant play it past Gascoigne... they sold this game like a mainstream due the lack of good games... BB is amazing but not for everyone and I pre-ordered and bought my ps4 only because of it...

@Leonagard: I'm not talking indie rereleases. I listed 4 outstanding indies that came out this past year. While AAA games weren't good last year, this year has been great so far. Bloodborne, Pillars of Eternity, and Witcher 3 were outstanding RPGs. Arkham Knight, despite the DLC garbage, is still supposed to be fairly good. Nintendo hasn't done a ton, but Splatoon is one of the best multiplayer shooters released in years, Mario Kart 8's 2nd DLC was fantastic, and MH4U is supposed to be really good.

@zeldafan195: I agree with you and I also whish more indies to come EITR is the most expected indie for me (just an example)... You missundestod whats the point here... my coment was about a lack of AAA, more precisely on consoles only Bloodborne's instant glory among other titles this year, a game made for "everyone" and still too hard for those who plays Batman.

Any Dark Souls news is good news, anytime, and to the people saying that the franchise is getting "milked": It's the only good franchise getting milked, and it's not even getting milked, if you look closely at the release history. Dark Souls 3 looks absolutely stunning, and it will be the culmination of Miyazaki's work thus far, obviously. We are in for a treat, me thinks.

If it's a Miyazaki game I'm in on default. He is one of two such creators for me, the other is Ken Levine.

Praise those devs. Best developers in the gaming industry hands fking down. All they need is an engine that isn't running on two potatoes and a toaster and they're set to dominate this gen.

@silversix_: Absolutely, hands down the best and most creative devs in the industry, by far. I chuckle a little bit when all the casuals exclaim how Godly Naughty Dog is. Naughty Dog honestly doesn't have a quarter of the artistic and creative talents that From Software has. Not only that, but no Western developer can come close to matching the Japanese when it comes to any kind of RPG.

@jdlok: You are talking about two very different developers who make very different games. The Last of Us is brilliant in a lot of ways that Miyazaki's games aren't and they are brilliant in a lot of ways Naughty Dog's aren't. For example, Naughty Dog creates exceptional AI in its games. They also design very smart puzzles, and they merge narrative and gameplay in an incredible way. The Souls games, meanwhile, have astounding combat engines, brilliant online features, and more style and atmosphere than most any other game out there. But the AI is pretty simplistic, there isn't much of a story, and their idea of a puzzle is putting something in a place no one would possibly imagine finding. Of course Naughty Dog's games lack a unique visual style, the combat is merely mediocre, and the online is good but standard.

@Setho10: I agree that the Last of US is a DECENT game, it's not great, it's decent. You do the same thing the ENTIRE game, there are no creative puzzles or interactions, or anything. I just got done playing it because I heard it's the greatest game of all time from some people.
