Dark Souls Creator Planning to Launch "Several New Projects"

Hidetaka Miyazaki also discusses sci-fi Dark Souls.

Dark Souls 3 is the "turning point" in the franchise and will pave the way for something new, according to series creator Hidetaka Miyazaki.

Speaking in an interview with GameSpot, Miyazaki was asked if he has given any thought to expanding the Souls series beyond fantasy and into other genres such as sci-fi.

"Dark Souls is my life’s work," he replied. "Everything I came up with for Dark Souls 3 is based on my personal preferences. However, Dark Souls 3 is also actually the turning point for the franchise."

Pressed on whether he would explore the sci-fi or mech genres, perhaps by applying the Souls framework to them, Miyazaki said he "definitely wants to bring the Miyazaki Touch" to them.

Miyazaki, who previously served in directorial and design capacities on Demon's Souls, Dark Souls, and Bloodborne, was appointed president of developer From Software in May 2014.

As part of his remit as president, Miyazaki intends to launch "several new projects," but didn't specify what these would be.

"I do want to work on something new," he added. "I’m pleased to hear people are interested in seeing that."

Dark Souls 3 is scheduled to launch in early 2016 for Xbox One, PlayStation 4, and PC.

The Dark Souls franchise has now shipped around 8.5 million copies across its previous instalments. This figure does not include sales of From Software's other popular games, Demon's Souls and Bloodborne.

Take a look at some screenshots from Dark Souls 3 below.

If done correctly, a true spiritual successor to Dead Space 1&2 could result from a marriage of Dark Souls (1) and Sci-Fi.

...maybe a little SHODAN flavor in there too, for good measure, since Dead Space was originally a spiritual successor to the almighty System Shock 2.

I want him to make a Souls game à la Tenchu. Some tactical ninja game.

Or maybe...a game à la Legacy of Kain.

I'd pre-order that game for 200$ no questions asked!

i'd like to have that sci-fi vibe/mech kind of souls game. like a skynet infested future environment. i just home they'll make it without too much reliance to artillery/ or projectile kind of weapons.

@riku610: It might actually work very well if ammo was very rare. Knowing I've only got, say, 9 shots to get through an entire area and kill a boss would be very tense.

Personally, I wish Miyazaki would rest the Souls' series for awhile. Although I love the games, I'm starting to feel a bit of exhaustion with the franchise. Souls deserves more than to devolve into ASSASSIN'S CREED. I also wish that Miyazaki would leave the Souls series firmly in a medieval world; having grown out of KING'S FIELD, Souls games feel perfectly set in their fantasy quasi-medieval worlds. Moving them would -- in my opinion -- feel too much like CASTLEVANIA: LORDS OF SHADOW 2 where a modern day setting sucked the life out of the storyline and I relished gameplay back in "memories" (IMHO CLoS 1 is a brilliant).

I do want to see From Software move again into games other than Souls (although I'm no fan of ARMORED CORE). Being a fan of their TENCHU game, I'd love to see more of that with Miyazaki's influence.

@battlefront1943: Ok dude. The issue with your statement is that Dark Souls is not Assassins Creed, and FromSoft is not Ubisoft. I am so tired of people putting FromSoft and Souls in the same category as that trash, and what it tells me is that you have 0 appreciation for art, and/or have never played a Souls game before in your life.

@battlefront1943: Ultimately, it will depend on what Namco wants. The series doesn't sell all that well though, so From might be able to get away with it.

@sethfrost: i wasn't talking about Spinoffs. And give me a break do you really want Souls to enter Assassin's Creed territory of release rates?

Sure, a bad Souls game would be better than the best AC game. But I for one - even though I have way over 1000-1500 hours of Ds,dks1,dks2 and bb - would prefer having some break from the series.

I think the series need to take a longer break to build a brand new and innovative Souls game. Maybe a new engine, a new but familiar feel.

Bloodborne was fantastic, I loved it. It also felt fresh and different in many ways. The new Dks3 doesn't look that new&exciting so far.

Look, I am sure DKS3 would be a good game, but so far it doesn't look better than BB nor DkS2.

@GunEye: "Doesn't look better than Dark Souls 2". Uhhh, wtf are you talking about? Miyazaki did not direct, nor design the areas in Dark Souls 2, He DID direct and design the areas/levels in Dark Souls 3. That is the most ridiculous thing I will hear today. You clearly know nothing about FromSoft, or Dark Souls if you honestly think that What they have shown, and what we know about DS3 already doesn't surpass DS2. Ba bye.

@GunEye: ah, I see. Makes sense. Still, you made interesting points.

To me, Dark Souls 2 already feels like a 'sequel/franchise' Souls game. In many ways 'more of the same', but without the touch of Miyazaki and his team, who were working on Bloodborne, not DS2. It is still a good game. Better than many others. But it didn't 'feel right' - at least to me (and some other people).

Demon's Souls and Dark Souls (1) have a distinct 'feel' to it. Dark Souls feels like a more intrinsic experience, due to the outstanding level-design. I saw the level design in the 3D map viewer a couple years ago and you can see how everything is connect.

Bloodborne in many ways WAS this 'fresh' and 'new' step forward, from the Souls games. Familiar enough and yet filled with new, exciting gameplay & ideas.

I would trust Miyazaki to be as meticulous with his approach to DS3, but I too also fear the 'franchizing' of a success story. We will have to wait and see.

Not too excited.. as a Soul/bb fan with some common sense, sounds like they are rushing and pushing the series. Releasing several games a year or at least a Souls game per year - which is very bad on my book.

BB was excellent and polished and Ioved DkS2 as well (even if it wasn't directed by M.) But I think the series need some break, some rest before coming back with something grand, fresh and exciting.

Otherwise we might get series fatigue here or simply a been there done that product. Ds games are very time consuming therefore making some breaks between releases is a good thing.

The Witcher wasn't released every year, neither did Metal Gear or Fallout etc, and the results show

@GunEye: Also: Metal Gear Plus spinoffs, which are still metal gear games, made by konami) = 1987, 1990, 1998, 2000, 2001, 2004, 2005, 2006, 2007, 2008, 2009, 2010, 2012, 2013, 2014, 2015.

@GunEye: I'm so tired of hearing "Souls Creed". There's a major difference between assassin's creed games, and souls games. Souls game haven't lost any value by coming out at a faster rate. Blood borne isn't technically a souls game because it was developed in cooperation with sony. Dark Souls 3 is essentially a fixed Dark Souls 2. And then From Software has already stated that they plan on taking the franchise in a completely new direction. So relax your little "FRANCHISE FATIGUE" whining and realize that some people want these releases. From Software does not need to cater to people who aren't dedicated fans. They are pleasing their core audience, heavily.

@jdlok: The Witcher isn't generic at all. It's not as unique as the Souls series (which i find to be better than the witcher), but it still shits over almost every other fantasy RPG.

@GunEye: Keep in mind he worked on Dark Souls and then BB; Dark Souls 2 had nothing to do with him, so it wasn't really a 'rush' since they were completely different teams of developers. The release time between DkS and BB was much longer.

"Dark Souls 2 had nothing to do with him." That is where you are wrong. Miyazaki wasn't directing the game, but he still was the supervisor so you can't say he didn't have anything to do with DS2.

@joku760: Precisely!
I mean let's face it, the "Guts Greatsword" was already a hint that he had an hand in the development (Miyazaki loves Berserk and always have a few Berserk inspired themes/objects/enemies or Berserk References in his games).
