Dark Souls Creator Planning to Launch "Several New Projects"

Hidetaka Miyazaki also discusses sci-fi Dark Souls.

Dark Souls 3 is the "turning point" in the franchise and will pave the way for something new, according to series creator Hidetaka Miyazaki.

Speaking in an interview with GameSpot, Miyazaki was asked if he has given any thought to expanding the Souls series beyond fantasy and into other genres such as sci-fi.

"Dark Souls is my life’s work," he replied. "Everything I came up with for Dark Souls 3 is based on my personal preferences. However, Dark Souls 3 is also actually the turning point for the franchise."

Pressed on whether he would explore the sci-fi or mech genres, perhaps by applying the Souls framework to them, Miyazaki said he "definitely wants to bring the Miyazaki Touch" to them.

Miyazaki, who previously served in directorial and design capacities on Demon's Souls, Dark Souls, and Bloodborne, was appointed president of developer From Software in May 2014.

As part of his remit as president, Miyazaki intends to launch "several new projects," but didn't specify what these would be.

"I do want to work on something new," he added. "I’m pleased to hear people are interested in seeing that."

Dark Souls 3 is scheduled to launch in early 2016 for Xbox One, PlayStation 4, and PC.

The Dark Souls franchise has now shipped around 8.5 million copies across its previous instalments. This figure does not include sales of From Software's other popular games, Demon's Souls and Bloodborne.

You know what I'd like to see, a new Armored Core along the lines of AC3, Silent Line, or 4 Answer. I liked the speed. The games were fine, they just needed more substance to the missions.

Do the Dark Souls games tell one consistent story at all? I loved Bloodborne and haven't played any Dark Souls games, and might pick up Dark Souls 3 if I'm not missing anything important.

@Dudez32: Yes and no. It's like they are set in the same world but you get the impression that they are different continents or different eras. They relate but aren't directly tied to gether like a proper sequel. You could play Dark Souls or Dark Souls 2 in any order and it would make just about the same amount of sense. Think of it like a zombie apocalypse movie: Every country is dealing with it and so the overall story is related but each country is dealing with it a little differently. Say the US has it in a semi-controlled state but in China it's a constant fight for survival. Same problem, different circumstances.

I would like to see PC and/or gaming journalism that actually reported ...something. There's no info here, no depth, no substance - nothing. It's just a hype bump - a reminder the game is in development - can't let the ADD kiddies forget about it - has to be a reminder of it every few days.

@Voqar: The is the result of internet news. There's is a constant need to fill your site/blog with news. New stuff doesn't happen everyday, at least not always stuff worth writing about. Eventually, you're reduced to producing stuff like this.

"I do want to work on something new."

It would be funny if the working titles are Darker Souls, Really Dark Souls, and Darkest Souls.

I loved old school Armored Core, but I'm not sure how I'd feel about a sci fi Dark Souls. This year is already heavily saturated with sci fi games.

My advice? Take a break. You can only make so many good games before you get burned out.

So, where did he say anything about sci-fi Dark Souls? You guys really suck at your job. See, I can do it to:

GS: So, tell me about the Disney version of Dark Souls?

Miyazaki: We think Disney is for little girls:

GS Headline: Dark Souls creator comments on the possibility of a Disney version of Dark Souls.

I'd love a return to classic Armored Core.....circa Silent Line.....not this ACV crap.....

IDK, Armored Core V wasn't utter crap, just not what I wanted out of the IP.....PS2 Armored Core was best.....

I'm not really a fan of the whole Souls line....too hard for me......

I would love a sci-fi rpg game with a large great story for mature people from this guy, i love his games but i always think what if he developed more his stories, gameplay is always great and characters are interesting altough you see them for a few moments, but i always feel i need to know more about the world the character you are playing with all that surrounds him.

Dark sci-fi sounds perfect for From. Very excited they're going away from the DS theme! I'll be watching.

Why not just make a new IP in a different genre? Why does it have to be Dark Souls sci fi?
