Dark Souls Creator Planning to Launch "Several New Projects"

Hidetaka Miyazaki also discusses sci-fi Dark Souls.

Dark Souls 3 is the "turning point" in the franchise and will pave the way for something new, according to series creator Hidetaka Miyazaki.

Speaking in an interview with GameSpot, Miyazaki was asked if he has given any thought to expanding the Souls series beyond fantasy and into other genres such as sci-fi.

"Dark Souls is my life’s work," he replied. "Everything I came up with for Dark Souls 3 is based on my personal preferences. However, Dark Souls 3 is also actually the turning point for the franchise."

Pressed on whether he would explore the sci-fi or mech genres, perhaps by applying the Souls framework to them, Miyazaki said he "definitely wants to bring the Miyazaki Touch" to them.

Miyazaki, who previously served in directorial and design capacities on Demon's Souls, Dark Souls, and Bloodborne, was appointed president of developer From Software in May 2014.

As part of his remit as president, Miyazaki intends to launch "several new projects," but didn't specify what these would be.

"I do want to work on something new," he added. "I’m pleased to hear people are interested in seeing that."

Dark Souls 3 is scheduled to launch in early 2016 for Xbox One, PlayStation 4, and PC.

The Dark Souls franchise has now shipped around 8.5 million copies across its previous instalments. This figure does not include sales of From Software's other popular games, Demon's Souls and Bloodborne.

Maybe the LotF developer will beat him to the sci-fi Souls, because they're currently working on just that. It remains to be seen though, if they learned from their gameplay issues.

They already have a sci fi mech game, learn about the industry if you are getting paid to work in it.

@Rhys4Peace: Tons of people disagree with you. Ask people if demon's souls is horrible before dark souls happened and people would go "that sucks", what a stupid japanese game. Now that people actually have played dark souls, a lot of people actually think demon's souls is ettter.

It's a niche game but it's a solid game that has good gameplay and it's fun to play + epic.

@putaspongeon: The Armoured Core series is so boring. The mechs control alright, but the actual combat and stories are trash. On top of that, the graphics are shit as well. And everyone i know loved Demon Souls when it first came out, whereas nobody I know even knows about AC.

@Rhys4Peace: "is so boring"

People say that about dark souls, you're saying it's boring because 1) You've never played it, or 2) It's not your game, realize that demon's souls and dark souls started as niche too

The graphics aren't shit. "Everyone I know loved demon souls when it came out", no one of your friends knew waht the game was and it'snot "demon souls" anyway, you don't even know the actual name of the game.

@putaspongeon: I've played it. I am a huge fan of mechs, and as such will try anything with mechs in it. And Demon's Souls (fucking happy?) may have been niche, but Dark Souls sure fucking isn't.

And yes, the graphics are shit. Have you played armoured core V? It looks like trash.

Also, funnily enough, i know my friends a lot better than you do. All my friends that play games love JRPG's, and so when they heard about some new RPG coming out of Japan, they jumped right on it. And I must apologise for forgetting the plural in 'Demon's Souls'. Next time i won't forget, and that'll just leave you with even less of a point :)

@Rhys4Peace:

I know you're bullshit since you didn't even know the name of Demon's Souls.

Demon's Souls and Dark Souls is pretty damn ugly too.

You're literally just making shit up to argue your point, your friends didn't know what demon's souls is and you didn't until dark souls came out, get over it, you're a bullshitter.

@putaspongeon: I sorry, i missed a letter in the game title. Naturally I don't know shit about the game. You're right.

And yeah they are. You seen Demon's Souls lately. That game is ugly as shit.

Anyway, you can think what you want man.I know my life, I know my friends far better than you. Hope you have fun in your itsy bitsy bubble of denial.

As long as it's not an annual release, I'm good with that. As far as I'm aware (correct me if I'm wrong), there haven't been any annual AAA global releases out of Japan (Dynasty Warriors?), so I don't think I have to be too worried about that.

As for a “sci-fi Dark Souls”, I'm actually having trouble imagining how that wouldn't just be Dead Space.

Just don't make this series annual release. I personally have a bit of fatigue with the souls series(+bloodborne) after playing too much of it. Will be getting DS3 but probably not at week one.

How about an open world Dark Souls with random monster placements that go anywhere they like, so you never know what to expect.

@exedeath: Would have more jumpscare value, but with souls its actually kinda fun to ''plan'' how you're going to beat some enemies.

They can control the difficulty better also with the current way the monsters are.

I couldn't get into the Dark Souls games mostly because I've never been into fantasy/middle earth style games. Shit, I haven't even touched Skyrim! But if they plan on making a Dark Souls style game in a sci fi setting, I'm defiantly down for that!

They made some changes in DS2 I wasn't crazy about mainly pyromancy. Hopefully they have there own class again in DS3. Maybe speed the combat a bit too. I am sort of burned out on the souls series now I have logged like 500 hours between DS1 and DS2 and DS. Didn't get to play Bloodborne yet.

The gameplay framework of the Souls games is excellent; Miyazaki can paint anything around this framework and retain the edge we love in his games. When side-scrolling Mario turned into 3D Mario it's hardcore edge was lost (though something was gained as well). No need to go whole hog and change the gameplay formula. We thank him for bringing back the hardcore edge to the AAA gaming space.

I think it would be interesting if they made a hack-n-slash game, even more action based than Bloodborne. From's most critically acclaimed game before Souls was Otogi.

Whatever they do, From Soft needs to take the time. I absolutely loved DS 1 and 2 but the way DS 2 ended up left me worried about its flaws (a considerably easier main campaign, uninspired boss battles and a feel of "go from point A to point B" here and there to mention a few) and a little uneasy about the franchise's future.

Just like the last 4 times, seeing this game in screen shots and short clips makes me want it. Doesn't matter that I couldn't stand every previous Souls game after a couple hours; there's something about the idea of these games, at a fundamental level, that really appeals to me.

I'm sure I'll try this one and it'll have all the same features that turned me off the others so strongly (because none of it is anything they'd think was broken) but I'll probably be excited to play it all the way up to that point.

I don't think it could work with Sci Fi. Sci Fi almost assuredly implies guns or lasers, so how would the combat work, when souls relies heavily on melee weapons?

@divinejester: Surely you've seen Gundam and other mecha anime? They use melee weapons all the time in those shows and films. In fact I would say it is pretty rare to see a mecha show where the mechs don't use at the very least an energy sword of some sort, and in many they use a variety of melee weapons. They change things up depending on the situation. At range they might shoot an enemy but an opponent who is too quick or has countermeasures might require the use of a sword.

They could also do something of a mix between sci-fi and fantasy like Phantasy Star or the upcoming Xenoblade Chronicles: X where a high tech team of spacegoers lands on an underdeveloped (read fantasy) planet. That could mean very limited ammunition so guns could be used as a powerup of sorts and the player could be forced to use less advanced technology for the average encounter.

I loved Dark Souls and Bloodborne. And I love how DS3 is looking and that they're inovating and not just keeping it the same as DS1 or 2. I'd definitely love to see this team push out other games in other genres, but keep a similar formula. They should take over and make a Ninja Gaiden
