Now Playing: Nioh - Alpha Demo Announcement Trailer

A demo for Nioh, the new Onimusha-meets-Dark Souls game from Team Ninja, arrives later this month, but only for a limited time.

The "alpha demo," as it's being called, is due out on PS4 on April 26. It'll be available only until May 5, at which time it'll disappear from the PlayStation Store.

Players who manage to clear the stage in the demo will be entitled to a DLC pack in the final game called The Mark of the Conqueror. There's no word on what this consists of; Team Ninja simply refers to in a PlayStation Blog post as "special DLC."

Following the demo's release, Team Ninja will solicit feedback through an online survey so it "can make [the game] even more fun."

The studio also announced the full game is due out at some point in 2016. Neither it nor publisher Koei Tecmo had offered a release window previously.

Nioh was announced for PS4 in December during PlayStation Experience. Prior to that, it had been intended to come to PS3--as a launch game, no less--but development issues resulted in it being shelved.

You can get a glimpse of the game in action in the demo trailer above, as well in previously released footage. As we've noted, the game seems to have a decidedly slower pace than the games Team Ninja is known for, like Ninja Gaiden, and appears to have taken more than a bit of inspiration from From Software's Souls series.

Gaiden souls confirmed

At least the demo seems to be a good way of letting gamers try the product after Team Ninjas fall of quality.

However a demo is just a demo and rarely reflects the final product, after NGZ Yaiba and NG3 I'll wait and see. TN at this moment doesn't deserve customer trust.

I hope this starts a new trend in having more demos for new games. It shows they have confidence in their work, and want people to experience it. I'm REALLY enjoying Fallout 4 right now, but I'll definitely stop for a few days to take this one for a spin. Also, everyone is right, that dude looks almost exactly like Geralt, ha!

What this game looks way faster then the Souls games and a lot better honestly those Souls games are too slow for my taste been wanting a true high speed hack and slash ala Ninja Gaiden or Devil May Cry and this looks to be it. Wonder why they're releasing a limited time demo that sux I liked it better when you could play a demo forever.

looks like ninja gaiden meets devil may cry meets dark souls meets the witcher (witcher mostly because of the way he dodges). i like all of those games so i'll definitely check it out. always cool to have new IPs instead of part 4 or 5 of something.

This game actually looks pretty sick, can't wait to try the demo out.

YUP... I fucking want this game. Good thing I bought a PS4! Although I wish I had the option for other platforms... Thanks Sony...

NOPE the glowing puppy and the colorful bird summons killed the atmosphere.

Avatar image for esqueejy

I was mildly intrigued and then...dude summoned a glowing poodle.

I'm excited about this game. Although the aping of Dark Souls' Prepare to Die tag line, seems a little shameless!

Looks fun.

Avatar image for malikmmm

the main character looks like Geralt of Rivia.

Avatar image for RaveNRolla

@malikmmm: the way he dodges does too.

Avatar image for IanNottinghamX

@malikmmm: The concept art looks like edward from Full Metal Alchemist.

So, in addition to getting a free alpha demo, if you manage to get to a certain point n the demo, you get free DLC as well.? Sweet, sign me up!

I think Playstation should make a policy that all games need to release a demo.

Avatar image for RSM-HQ

@dexda: Developers prefer to give out Beta and Alpha builds for testing. They prefer to research the products stages than giving free handouts with no valuable information in return. Plus Alphas and Betas have expiration dates so you can't rely on a freebie instead of investing in the future product.

Demos overall are seen as out dated, and tend to damage a games sales than benefit them.

Avatar image for deactivated-58183aaaa31d8

@RSM-HQ: If they made a good game it wouldn't damage them at all. If the demo is just a slice of a shit game they don't deserve sales anyway.

I'd rather a developer go bust than gamble/waste money on any more shit games. Demos allow us to sample a game's gameplay and mechanics before we buy. If they can't even sell their game to me after I've tried it then that is their problem.

Avatar image for RSM-HQ

@dexda: It's been studied that plenty of gamers stick with the demo over the games actual purchase model. Because why buy a game when the demo has the best bits?. . For free. Lost sales are lost sales. Gametrailers before its close had a long video discussion on the subject and overall just doesn't work very well from a financial perspective over Alphas and Betas, which still are technically demos, just not in name as they can be pulled and usually linked towards the games investment.

Wanting something for free in a buisness that publishers invest millions towards, is not beneficial to the men and women creating these games. I'm not talking about demos that make a game look bad, but the primitive form of demos in general. May not be your problem, however they have every right to consider their best interests.

Avatar image for deactivated-58183aaaa31d8

@RSM-HQ: Who said anything about giving the BEST bits? They don't need to give us spoilers just a cross section of the gameplay.

I'm sorry but if a DEMO is good enough that you don't need to buy the actual game then the game sucks. Also that sounds like a product of the past. Old school games were often all about the gameplay. If you've played one level of Mario for example you've pretty much played them all. In that case I can see where there might be a problem.

Now though in most cases the story, atmosphere and level design are so unique that every chapter offers something different.

Like if they had given us a demo of Witcher 3 which was a small section of White Orchard and had a couple of missions/mobs that wouldn't have told you ANYTHING about the story or the overall world. But it WOULD show you the combat and it would let you sample Geralt as a character.

I mean that is hardly ruining the entire game is it?

@dexda: This. One of my favorite features on Xbox live arcade for the 360 was that all games had demos. I often pass on games because I don't get to try it before hand, and to me it looks like your not confident in your game if you won't let people test it out first.

Avatar image for X-RS

And I thought demo's were ~"a waste of resources that could actually lead to a decline in sales"~ yet they back in 2016 :/

Avatar image for jcharp

Damn, that looks pretty darn good. Will definitely keep an eye out for the demo.

Avatar image for Ayato_Kamina_1

I hear the sequel to this will involve a lot of nickel hydroxide.

Avatar image for deactivated-58183aaaa31d8

@Ayato_Kamina_1: I like your style.

Avatar image for louixiii

I like the concept but I'm a bit on the fence when it comes to this game. I'll DL the demo but I'm not too hype for NiOh

Avatar image for huyi12

It looks good and i like the combat, they seem to be confident with their game by releasing a demo so i will give it a go when it comes out.

Avatar image for LPDisturbedHU

Definitely looks cool, I really hope it does well.

Avatar image for RogerioFM

I like Team Ninja.

Avatar image for wrestlemaniaw

more like inspired by witcher...

Avatar image for Pyrosa

Umm... Team Ninja + Dark Souls-style combat? F. YES.

Count me in.

Looooooong before there was Demon's Souls or Dark Souls, there was the brutal-yet-fair excellence of Ninja Gaiden. Hurt so good...

Avatar image for ixilion

I enjoyed Ninja Gaiden, Onimusha, and the Souls series so I'll definitely try this one out!

Avatar image for Kruiz_Bathory

A Shibe DOGE OMFG I'm so getting this DAY ONE!!!1!!11!! Plus Ancient Japan (not sure if feudal) setting= win in my eyes.

Avatar image for darthrevenx

I hope this is good and that it is a lot like Onimusha more than the dark Souls side cus frankly Onimusha is better than Dark Souls....

Avatar image for Marky360

Yea I can agree with that.

Avatar image for berserker66666

Damn.....it looks so cool.

Avatar image for camou504

Where do i pay?

Avatar image for brn-dn

Pretty cool way to introduce the game! I'll be checking this out now because of the demo.
