Daniel Craig's Knives Out Character Benoit Blanc Is "Obviously" Queer, Director Confirms

Rian Johnson has confirmed that Knives Out's master detective Benoit Blanc is queer.

While promoting his upcoming Netflix film Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery, Rian Johnson has confirmed that lead character Benoit Blanc, played by Daniel Craig, is queer. Blanc's partner makes a cameo appearance in the film, which is due out in November for a brief run in theaters, followed by its debut on Netflix.

As reported by Deadline, Johnson was speaking about the film following its showing at the London Film Festival over the weekend. In reference to a scene where Blanc was shown apparently living with another man, the director was asked if that meant that the Knives Out protagonist is queer.

"Yes, he obviously is," Johnson responded. Blanc's partner in the film is played as a cameo role by a well-known British actor, but both Johnson and Daniel Craig avoided saying the actor's name for the sake of audiences who won't see the film until November. Johnson added about the unnamed actor: "There’s nobody in the world I can imagine in bringing me more joy for Benoit Blanc to be with."

"No spoilers: Who wouldn’t want to live with that person?" Craig added later in the presser.

Glass Onion is the first of two Knives Out sequels Netflix has contracted with director Rian Johnson, with each of them following Craig's Benoit Blanc as he solves a new murder mystery. Reviews for the film have started trickling out since it premiered at Toronto International Film Festival, with critics so far agreeing that Glass Onion is a sequel worth watching.
