Cyberpunk 2077 Launch Issues Reportedly Cost Founders $1 Billion In Wealth

As CDPR's stock has tumbled following the release of Cyberpunk 2077, the founders' joint share has gone severely down in value as well.

The technical issues surrounding the launch of Cyberpunk 2077 have had an impact on CD Projekt Red's stock value, and that in turn is reportedly hitting its founders' net worth. Bloomberg reports that the company's founders have cut the value of their joint stake by $1 billion in only a matter of days.

The joint 34% stake in the Polish company is co-owned by three executives--Marcin Iwinski, Adam Kicinski, and Piotr Nielubowicz--along with a fourth owner, Michal Kicinski. Those four have become the among the wealthiest Poles in recent years as anticipation grew for Cyberpunk. But as the stock has been dropping, so has their wealth. Their stake was reportedly worth about $3 billion on Tuesday.

Perhaps more importantly, analysts say this launch has cost the studio significant credibility. Average analyst forecasts for 12-month sales dropped from 30 million copies before the release to 25.6 million copies now.

The PlayStation 4 and Xbox One versions appear to be one major cause of the stock and forecast drops. Those platforms are popular and widespread, and they're also significantly buggier and less graphically impressive than the PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X versions. Players seeking to avoid those versions, or holding out until they opt-in to the new generation, mean a smaller pool of potential consumers.

CD Projekt Red had issued an apology for the performance on last-gen systems, and recommended players who are dissatisfied seek refunds. But it also acknowledged that it had no special agreement for such refunds, and recently stopped recommending them on PlayStation.

Yeah, nice joke. Let's measure "wealth" through the perceived value of stock prices. It's not wealth until those founders decide to sell the company to cash in. But it's great to see Gamespot posting so many stock related articles on here now. More clickbait articles where the staff can talk about things they have no clue about.

Maybe they should’ve postponed it for a year? I bought it Day One, but not gonna play it any futher until at least the stuck-in-first-person car mode bug has been fixed.

If you can't expect these kind of problems with an ambitious RPG then you haven't been gaming in the past decade, or at least in the genre. You can complain about how standards lowered, but at least you get these kind of games instead of more GaS crap. Plus, there's a lot of factors with this release that just scream "problematic".

@santinegrete: "Ambitious RPG" Lmao. A big city and good graphics doesn't make your RPG ambitious. Role-playing elements do (choices, customization, world interactivity and reactivity), in which CP2077 SEVERELY lacks and underdelivers - be it in general if compared to other RPG's, or if compared to what the marketing campaign promised. Divinity OS II, Disco Elysium and Pathfinder: Kingmaker are actually ambitious RPG's, or the upcoming Baldur's Gate III, to name a few examples.

It's not even called an RPG by the devs anymore. CDPR changed the genre from RPG, to "open world action adventure story" in the last year of development, if you haven't noticed.

@Berserk8989: I noticed, I just find some tropes of RPG on it in a dev that did RPGs until they went to this direction.

Did Covid effect this?

Did people who worked at home not work as hard= deliver as much results?

I'm honestly asking..

Most gamers failed to get a PS5 console.

i tried twice on both the days.

and just gave up as the reality is I'm kinda happy with PS4.

Guess the bottom line is CDPR was aware and released it anyways..

*I was dead-wrong thinking they we're postponing the release date for whatever conspiracy reasons..

I haven't even played it yet as i was already waiting for next gen release but main reason is My backlog is full atm and i see no reasons to insert a game with technical issues ahead of polished other games..

@sippio: They showed the first trailer for this game in January 2013. This game was in development for over 7 years. It was designed for the XB1/PS4 and originally scheduled to release in April.

CDPR claimed that working from home introduced challenges that caused them to postpone the launch, and then go back on their word and institute mandatory "crunch time" for developers in May and June. But that's really all irrelevant. This game didn't release with relatively minor problems. It was virtually unplayable on the two consoles it was designed for. If anything, COVID gave CDPR a "reason" to push back the launch and improve it.

Given how bad they are now, just how bad were the XB1 and PS4 versions of this game back in April?

IMHO, no amount of bug and glitch fixes will fix the broken AI and the shallow world. I mean, come on, are these really the guys that developed Witcher 3? That game AI and world is more "interactive" than Night City. What the **** has happened? And, before anybody asks, yes I played the game for ~10 hours, and gave up. They should have made a linear experience instead.

@gns: I think it will. I put over 60 hours in. While I did love the game, well when it worked but I have a beefy PC so I am blessed, it pretty much was an unfinished game. There are signs everywhere of systems that are not finished.

1. Police - The current system feels very placeholder while the real one will come out later. Evidence is that Police that are spawned in world near a Patrol car, they will get in and pursue you. If you get far away though they lose all aggro. To me it's a sign of something not being done.

2. Roads. If you pay attention to sloped roads some of them are nice and smooth and others are jagged. Again, leads me to believe they aren't done with some of those either since the quality changes on certain ones.

3. Placeholder text on some signs

4. Endless on top of endless bugs.

5. Being a passenger in a car while an AI companion drives. You can tell it wasn't done. Especially a lot of the Action set pieces in the Panam storyline.

6. Audio not in some of the set pieces. Times where in a "cut scene" some audio is not there.

Probably a few more I can't think of. I don't blame anyone for giving up though. I had a few really bad sessions where I got off in frustration. They should not of released the game I can say that for sure. While it is fucked up right now I think they will get it where it should be. I can tell you the story to me was amazing. The only reason I kept playing.

@gns: I am hoping that since it appears the game was released before it should of been, the systems that are missing or that feel shallow will have been worked on the last year or so. Just not in the game.

They shouldn't be starting from scratch. Honestly picking up where they left off. Sadly who tf knows. I guess we will see in January.

At this point, I just add 6-8 months to any new release game before I plan on buying it. Most games seem to come out in a beta state now anyway.

Reminds me of the Batman Arkham Knight PC debacle, but the other way around I. E. Poorly running on consoles. I'm lucky to have a beefy PC (just upgraded to RTX 3080FE) and I can run the game with all the bells and whistles. I'm sad that the PS4 is suffering as I ordered that collector's edition (man the statue is a looker) to support the developer. I have patience and will wait to start the game when it's fixed.

@Oldgun: Yeah Batman Arkham Knight was a nightmare on PC..

*I cared more about Arkham Origins as i didn't play it at launch and wanted to ULTRA it..

The troubleshooting i went through was extreme... It was hard crashing my PC with Purple and black screen and i thought i had it solved only for my save to get corrupted...

I decided to wait for a remaster.. i was pretty pised when it wasn't in the Arkham collection due to Rocksteady arrogance... Whatevs..

I liked the story,,voice acting and esp the map of Arkham Origins..

It’s not that big of a deal. It sucks, yes, but it will get better. They weren’t actively trying to screw anyone over. They just couldn’t afford to push the game back yet again. Most of us don’t have new gen consoles yet and even fewer have highly capable PCs. By the time most of us upgrade, things will be fixed. They value their customers and don’t nickel and dime us to death. I trust them. I’ll just play something else while I wait.

@rawkstar007: They weren't actively trying to screw anyone over?!?!? LOL!! That's hilarious. They were absolutely trying to screw people over. CDPR didn't allow reviewers access to the XB1/PS4 versions of this game prior to launch. Every single review was based on the PC version. Why? Because the low review scores would have caused a waive of cancellations and they'd be in even worse financial shape than they justifiably are now.

The trailer for this game was released in January 2013, before the launch of the XB1 and PS4. It's been in varying stages of development for over seven years! This game was specifically designed to release on those two consoles, it's not a "next gen" game. In fact, one of CDPR's excuses is that they spent "too much time" on the Series X/PS5 versions.

I'm sorry, but one buggy release like this does not ruin their credibility with me, at least. Bethesda released every game in much worse condition than this one, and still managed to maintain goodwill with the general audience for a long time. Blizzard managed to keep goodwill for a long time despite Activision turning their production into garbage. Bioware only recently managed to kill off the last of their banked audience love with Andromeda and Anthem, even though the problems they were having were showing long before that.

I'm not happy with the state of Cyberpunk on release, but I have full confidence that CDPR will make repairs and the game will be just as good as the Witcher before all is said and done. This is one screw up set against their previous successes, and we should be putting it in that perspective.

That said, get it fixed, CDPR! Sooner the better.

@Royas: True. CDPR would need to make this a habit for them to lose stock in my book. hopefully, however, they'll reel back the ambition just a bit. They need to focus on making games that run well and can be released in a timely fashion.

@Newsboy: Fixers, for one. Their entire introductory segments are completely missing. You get the call to go see them and start getting missions from them. It straight up circumvents that in it's current state though, and you just start getting random dumps in your journal entry that are devoid of the context that interacting with the fixer was supposed to provide. Then, if you do go see them, they already have a rapport with you - because it skipped their introductory segment entirely.

The entire NCPD. 'nuff said on that one.

I'm also 40-ish hours into the game, and not a day goes by you don't run into something that isn't finished - not just buggy - but straight up unfinished.

This is No Man's Sky levels of "SURPRISE, this is early access!".

Have people even followed the past 2 and a half years of media coverage for this game? There is a TON of cut out content. A mere DLC wouldn't be enough to include even 10% of what was 'supposed' to get in this game and didn't. They would need to work on a very ambitious expansion pack that would take them 2 years at least to make if they wanted to actually bring their full vision as they originally wanted to do it. The current game we're playing only have two main systems finished, the Main Quests, and the City proper, that's it.

@rekonym: List should be interesting, but it amazes me that it's even necessary. Just spending time in the city and working the quests makes it evident how unfinished the game is.

#BuyNowFixLater does not work. You'd think they'd have learned from Bethesda, Ubisoft & BioWare.

Well done, in their rush to make money in the holiday season, it's gone horribly wrong.

again this is what happen when people that have no say in programing and how ready or not ready a game is, stick there nose in something and put unrelasitc goals on the dev, it also what happen when they dont listen to devs in the first place.

I want the game but i wont buy for at lest 6 months to year at which point things the will actual be ready to be digested

Wow! Whoever made the decision to release this game in the state it is in, full of bugs, must be burrying their heads so deep right now. Monumental mistake.

It is good that this is happening and happening to CDPR, the once beloved devs. That will teach devs in general that it is unacceptable to release a game in this state. Moving forward that will make them think five times before deciding to take advantage of peope like that.

CDPR is now a corrupt company, the days in which they were an example of the industry are long gone. They hid last gen console performance for a reason and soon will join the ranks of Bioware and Bethesda, what a sad story.

@Dilandau88: Assuming CDPR fixes the game up. It needs a lot, and not just performance improvements on the last gen consoles.

But if that happens, I imagine everybody will go ham for CDPR as soon as the first flashy trailer for their next big game comes out.
