Cyberpunk 2077 Issues Hurt CD Projekt's Profit

The company says costs related to improving the game impacted profitability for the latest quarter.

CD Projekt has released its latest earnings results, and included amongst the numbers was some commentary around Cyberpunk 2077 and what's next for the studio.

Starting off, CD Projekt Red it remains "hard at work" on Cyberpunk 2077's new version for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S, noting that it remains on track to launch in the first quarter of 2022 (January-March). Additionally, a "major update" for Cyberpunk 2077 on all platforms will be released around this time, the Polish developer said.

Now Playing: Cyberpunk 2077 Review

The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt's PS5 and Xbox Series X|S edition remains in development, too. CD Projekt previously said it's on track to launch in Q2 2022 (April-June).

A Cyberpunk 2077 expansion pack is also in development, but CD Projekt did not say when it's scheduled to release. The company did, however, provide a graph that shows it continues to increase the size of the development team working on the expansion.

Even more developers are now working on Cyberpunk 2077's first expansion
Even more developers are now working on Cyberpunk 2077's first expansion

All of this is happening as CD Projekt attempts to "transform" its studio to become a company that makes more games simultaneously. To that end, CD Projekt recently acquired Digital Scapes and The Molasses Flood to become CD Projekt Vancouver and CD Projekt Boston, respectively. There is no word yet on what these teams are working on.

In terms of numbers, CD Projekt made 144 million PLN in revenue for its third quarter, which is up by more than 40% compared to the same period last year. Total profit, however, slid to 16 million PLN, down from 23.4 million PLN. The company said the downturn was attributable in part to expenses related to updating and improving Cyberpunk 2077 after its rocky launch, and costs covering "exploratory work" on new projects that are at the beginning of their development cycles.

Looking ahead, CD Projekt will face a tough comparison in the fourth quarter of 2021. CD Projekt saw a massive spike in revenue in Q4 2020 thanks to the launch of Cyberpunk 2077, which had one of the most commercially successful launches in the history of RPGs, despite the issues. The graph below shows just how big of an impact Cyberpunk 2077's launch had on CD Projekt's bottom line--no other product release in the company's history comes close.

Cyberpunk 2077's launch in December 2020 was a huge commercial success

Despite Cyberpunk 2077's issues, CD Projekt remains intent on improving upon and expanding the game so it can sell for years to come. The game is currently 50% off on Steam as part of the Autumn Sale.

Just started this game after getting a 3080. Impressed with what they made. Honestly surprised I wasn't seeing more issues because this was one ambitious project. Feel for those who got this day 1 and encountered breaking bugs, but this game is a blast

Nooooooooooooo really??

The sad thing is how much money they reported making by releasing a broken game. The drooling masses just ate it up.

@Thanatos2k: What did the drooling masses eat up? That it made money? Because it did make money, that's a fact, not anyone's opinion. Now they are amending that to say it made money, but they are spending that money to fix it. Or are you referring to the high praise that no one has given it?

Not touching Cyberpunk 2077 again until new content from an expansion is out. Just recently started playing Skyrim again with the AE edition. Some of these graphical mods have come a long way, definitely brings new life to the game. Especially for a game that came out in 2011. So refreshed.

cyberpunk on PS is still garbage! I got a refund when they offered, then gave them another chance and still garbage. you know I feel like an idiot! Maybe, just maybe, if the ever release a PS5 update, I'll give it one more chance, but I don't know. So disappointed in this game, and myself for buying it again! Gotta go, time to flog myself for this again.

Next to all problems it has(on consoles),the change from a 3rd person view rpg(The Witcher) to a 1st person view cyberpunk rpg turned me off,its totally not on my radar.

It hurts me personally coz i am a huge Bladerunner fan (i found both movies excellent).

Wished i had a pc lol coz i think there are 3rd person view-mods out there

Gotta say, the game is actually really good now on PC. Can't speak for the console versions though, (gave up on trying to play it on consoles a while ago).

What god awful fake news journalism. This headline is a complete contradiction to what is actually said by CD Project Red. The graph shows that cyperpunk's release was their most profitable quarter ever and we are provided a link that tells us that cyberpunk is one of the most succesful rpg's of all time. The other graph shows that support of cyberpunk is being scaled down, suggesting that less money is being spent on support, but more rescources are being spent on expansions and other products. There is no quote saying that cyberpunk's issues hurt profitablility. Mr. Eddie Makuch made that up himself to get clicks on the article. The reality is that the data supports releasing half-baked video games because people will buy them regardless. This is why nobody trusts the media anymore. There is no integrity. Everyone is just trying to get their ad sales.

@am_h8ter_ade: You seem to be confusing sales and profit. Their sales were up and it was hugely success but profit was down because of resources spent on fixing the mess they created. You might consider that just semantics but the title is still accurate. Know it’s easy to jump on Eddie but maybe save the little click bait rant for when it’s actually applicable my friend :)

BTW before crying “FAKE NEWS!!” you could have searched yourself and found this…. "This year-on-year reduction in net profit is mainly due to expenses related to updating Cyberpunk and exploratory work on new projects at an early stage of development," finance chief Piotr Nielubowicz said in a statement….👏🏼😂

@deactivated-61a5a8e35ab83: "This year-on-year reduction in net profit is mainly due to expenses related to updating Cyberpunk and exploratory work on new projects at an early stage of development," finance chief Piotr Nielubowicz….FINANCE CHIEF….he literally said it himself. After all that indignant blustering I’m glad to see you can read 🤣

From what I have been reading throughout the year, the endeavor would be better characterized as a stabilization effort than an improvement one.

Just here for the proof that once your got the gaming community butthurt, there's NEVER enough that can be done that will ever ever ever undo it. The tantrum, once begun, is self-perpetuating, inconsolable and forever.

@esqueejy: There wasn't much done to it though was there, Esqueejy? They have been focusing on the memory issues, decreasing the likelihood the game would glitch in curious ways, while simultaneously disabling graphical features to accommodate older platforms. From what I know, NPCs still can't chase after you on vehicles.

"noting that it remains on track to launch in the first quarter of 2022"

I'll believe it when I see it. The game itself was delayed multiple times and still a mess. The patch was originally supposed to be this year and now it's next. A "quarter" is a pretty big range too. I understand not promising exact dates but if they can't even nail it to a single month that tells me they don't actually know when they will be done.

Hopefully that gwent workforce is there to produce another singleplayer game, i had a great time playing thronebreaker, money well spent and it had some replayability. If there is a new one in development should bump the difficulty, you steamrolled every fight making the puzzles the hardest battles.

@s1taz4a3l: The "find parts on the map" addition was just... weird.

Could have just served as a level select and cutscene/choice trigger.

Well, that's just shocking, maybe next time they'll think twice before releasing a half-baked project to the masses.

@CrouchingWeasel: No, having their profits negatively impacted is what should happen when a publisher launches a video game that's a mess.

@mogan: Yeah, but never enough. There is literally nothing a dev in CDPR's shoes can do...EVER...that will be accepted as enough by these people. Never enough punishment. Never enough atonement. Never enough apologies. Never enough effort to fix. Never and nothing. The conniption fit takes on a life of its own and lives forever.

@esqueejy: They haven't really tried that hard tbh. I'll forgive them if they can pull off a NMS redemption arc. Doubt it though.

No shit, Sherlock.

They'd best hurry up with the PS5 and Xbox Series patch in order to make some sales and garner goodwill.
