Cyberpunk 2077 is a "true RPG," definitely not a multiplayer shooter

"Relax," CD Projekt Red CEO Marcin Iwinski says.

CD Projekt Red's upcoming title Cyberpunk 2077 is a "true RPG," and is "definitely" not a multiplayer shooter, studio CEO Marcin Iwinski has said. In a new interview, Iwinski explained that the developer is not going to deviate from its core strengths--storytelling and big game worlds--for Cyberpunk 2077. The game isn't expected to launch until 2015 or 2016.

"People have been asking me if Cyberpunk 2077 will have multiplayer or if it will be a straight-up shooter, and I tell them to relax, because it will be a true RPG game," Iwinski told IGN.

"We are known for storytelling, and big game worlds, and so we’re taking all what we've learnt from previous three Witcher games, as well as the open-world aspect, and applying it to Cyberpunk 2077," he added. "So yes, it is an all-out RPG game, but we're looking at having a lot of new gameplay elements that I cannot talk about yet. One thing I can say for sure is that it is definitely NOT a multiplayer shooter."

The game will have some form of multiplayer, CD Projekt Red confirmed in 2013, but no further details have been made available. The Polish studio is also currently working on The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt for release later this year across Xbox One, PlayStation 4, and PC.

Cyberpunk 2077 puts players into a "dark future" in 2077 where advanced technologies have become "both the salvation and the curse of humanity." The game promises a nonlinear story designed for "mature" players and is set in the metropolis of Night City. Cyberpunk 2077 will also featured unspecified sandbox elements.

As long as the game is DRM-free (the PC version) and content is not locked behind MP, I think it'll have a good reception when it's released.

The game world and theme looks more than gorgeous.

I hope there is a party and not just controllin one character.

Cd project's art is always mature and the vocals are mature as well and not gayishh and thats what makes their games kick as$

Imagine if witcher 3 had a party of lets say 1 or 2 more characters. It would have been insane

I hope the gameplay mechanics are more similar to Deus Ex Human Revolution than Mass Effect. Furthermore, I really hope this game comes to Xbox One. I know PC development is first and foremost on this game which is a good thing but I do hope it comes to consoles. I'm doing everything I can to scrape cash together for a $400 Xbox One. Buying a $500-$700 PC is out of the question for me.

Wasn't really worried that it would be, but it's nice to have reassurance nonetheless. The last thing this world needs is another great RPG developer to go down the toilet trying to cater to the morons who want every game to be a multiplayer shooter (sup, Mass Effect 3), or god forbid another MMO (we meet again, Bioware).

CD Projekt is the best developer around because they have a vision, the ability to pull it off, and the courage to refuse compromise. While other devs have been consumed by soulless publishers and caved to the pressure of cloning the dullest games around, these guys continue to make quality games and tell engaging stories with no heed for the worries of some heel executive or the insufferable moral panic fun police.

I think I need a good RPG...and I've yet to play one in this genre! Hope I get time to play it. I was always interested in cyberpunk/shadowrun rpg back in the 90's but never got a chance to get in a campaign

The world needs more true role-playing games. These half-assed RPGs are depressing me. Call it elitist if you will -- modern-day role-playing games have been very softcore. I'm ready for something new

Cyberpunk + CDPR... that's all I need to know. Day f-en one.

The only downside is I wish they hadn't announced it so early, since it feels like we have been waiting for forever already. Another year or two is going to be like torture.

Oh well, I'll have the amazing Witcher 3 game to keep me occupied. :-)

If you read into the actual lore of the Cyberpunk 2077 tabletop game then it sounds like this game is going to have a really badass setting and the overall vibe and rules of the world sound really , really cool! Seeing what CDPR did with The Witcher ip based on some books and short stories, I'm sure they have some awesomeness in store for this ip as well! So excited!

I can already hear the cries of Sexism from that trailer! Bad-ass trailer though!

Can't wait for this game, no doubt CDPR will not fail us.

<< LINK REMOVED >>I think most "cries" about sexism will be muted by the fact that they're building this game from an established RPG game from the 80s (Cyberpunk 2020) that had a hypersexualized art style to begin with. They could very easily say "Hey, we liked the old game and wanted to stay true to it, craziness and all", and shrug those complaints off. After all, sexism is something some people complain about, but gamers tend to love the idea of authenticity, and that would drown out the complaints of sexism quite easily, for what it's worth.

I think the real question would be whether it was important enough to stay true to that foundation given that it wasn't an RPG that was all that popular for all that long. Normally staying so true to the style is based on appealing to nostalgia...without that, what argument is there for not modifying the art style? Is the combat exaggerated and stylistic like, say, Bayonetta? Does the game's events/dialogue/voice acting parody itself? Etc. Etc.

We'll know more later on about the design decisions they made. It's far too early in the dev cycle to have any idea why they presented the game as they did in the trailer. I'm hoping the game will be good, either way. I like cyberpunk stuff.

Coincidence ?

Reverse CP and you get PC.

As I've grown older I've preferred my games shorter and shorter because I have less time to commit to a single game. As such, I have no interest in open world sandboxes like this or Elder sCrolls / Fallout.

I don't mind something semi linear semi open world like Mass Effect or Dragon Age. But when something is completely open world, the story usually suffers.

The story usually suffers, but bad stories and open worlds are not synonymous with each other.

Also, with most open world games these days, there is usually a save option accessible at any time, and the games can be completed in around 1-3 days if you rush through the main story.

Honestly though, I don't see why anyone would want a shorter game anyway, when you can always come back to the longer games later.

It's not like someone is forcing you to play through the game in one sitting of 20 minutes and then throwing the game into a compactor after the 20 minutes...at least I would hope not.

<< LINK REMOVED >><< LINK REMOVED >> I just find that open world RPGs have a disconnect between the urgency they try to sell you, and the actual leisure you have to do things in any order.

NPC: The galaxy is under threat! We must defend the earth from imminent destruction RIGHT NOW!

Player: Don't mind me, I'm just going to traipse around the galaxy running errands for people I overheard at a bar for the next 20 hours. I know Earth will still be there when I'm good and ready to go save it. Until then I'm going to take my time fetching things for people.

It's possible to just do the main story and skip all the side content, but the side content is what levels you up, and gets you good equipment that you will want for doing the harder parts of the game. And I always feel like I'm missing something if I skip it.

It's just my style of play. If I'm going to play a game, I want to see everything it has to offer. I don't want to intentionally skip anything. Which is why I prefer shorter games. I would rather play ten games that are 10 hours long each than one game that is 100 hours long. If I don't have 100 hours to put into something, let's say I only have 60 hours, that's enough time to get through 6 games, which is better than getting through 60% of one game and not completing it.

It would be nice to get a quality cyberpunk RPG where you get to create your own character, like in a lot of Bioware games. I don't know much about this game but I don't think anyone does.

It's not like in the Witcher, where there are established characters the lore is based around. This is a fresh start, and even a somewhat basic character customization would be alright in my books.
