Cyberpunk 2077 "Even More Ambitious" Than Originally Planned

"We need to create a game that will be even more successful."

While official details on Cyberpunk 2077 are being kept largely under wraps, CD Projekt Red joint CEO Adam Kicinski has now revealed the game is "even more ambitious" than what the developer originally had in mind.

No Caption Provided

"The project is even more ambitious than we first planned (...) we need to create a game that will be even more successful," he said on Polish TV station TVN24 BiS, as translated by Gamepressure. "We have a long way ahead of us to reach the biggest commercial successes in the world."

Kicinski went on to say that The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt was a big success with 6 million copies sold against an $81 million budget. The game was a "good investment," according to CD Projekt Red management, but at the same time, The Witcher 3 won't end up being a worldwide chart-topper for the full year.

"Sure, many people consider The Witcher 3 to be the best game in the world this year, but this is not a game that broke any sales record," he explained.

Cyberpunk 2077 was announced in October 2012. Details on the game have been scarce, although CD Projekt Red did say that it was not planning to discuss the game until 2017 at the earliest. According to visual effects artist Jose Teixeira, "Cyberpunk is far bigger than anything else that CD Projekt Red has done before... far, far bigger."

CD Projekt Red is "focusing" on Cyberpunk 2077, though the developer continues to support its award-winning Witcher 3 with new content. The game's second paid expansion, Blood and Wine, comes out next year.

When you set commercial success as the main target of the games you make, bad things will follow. Financially, difficult to say, but fans of CD Projekt Red, be wary.

Very surprised that this game, being easily the best and most notable of the generation so far, only has 6 million copies sold, especially with 30 million Sony consoles out there alone. Why do people buy consoles if not to play games? A PC does other things, but it's weird that you wouldn't buy the most interesting game if you have a console, when that's the only thing it does.

@megawalrus:

I think there are a few factors against it in this generation. Those factors are partially why I like it a lot.

There is a lot of sexism in the Witcher games. The women are often being portrayed as sex craving or weak. I think it's potentially realistic for the setting but doesn't vibe with everyone.

The characters are all white. This is likely because the development team is all white. I don't mind this, but again it may turn off some people who are not white.

You play as an old, grumpy, white, male. I personally love Geralt, but he is old school and doesn't mesh with many modern day people's idea of a hero. He is a bit sexist and womanizing even though he often helps women in a world where women are oppressed a lot.

I'd love to see more games like the Witcher personally, but I think these strikes against it are what keeps it from selling in large quantities. They can also say what they want about copy protection, but selling it with no copy protection hurts sales. Look at what happened to systems like the Wii which made pirating really easy. They couldn't sell any games.

@megawalrus: if witcher had a control squeme like shadows of mordor or god of war maybe it would sell better.... but RPGs like this wont appeal to the masses anyway.

Im tired of fantasy settings in rpg's, as pretty as the witchers nature environments were the world was kind of uninteresting to me and some of the missions were beyond boring which is why i stopped playing it somewhere around novigrad . The thoughts of future cyber city open world setting in an rpg is about as exciting an idea as anything for me since i love the sci fi genre in games second only to Sci - horror and as far as i know there hasnt ever been a future city open world setting in a game before at least not a true explorable open world. Maybe something like deus ex but thats far from open world or anything worth exploring. Id imagine it must be insanely hard to create an open world of any significant size that looks like something out of blade runner , nevermind having the power and memory available to render all that geometry it would take to build a world like that.

The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt is EASILY one of the very best gaming experiences ever created! Everyone looks at this game from the wrong perspective though. If you skip all the cutscenes and don't really care about the story or the characters themselves, then chances are you may just think the game is kinda good, BUT if you get drawn deep into the story and become so familiar with each one of the characters that you actually become emotionally attatched to them, be it in a good or bad way, THEN you're setting yourself up to experience a level of story driven entertainment like no other. The dialogue is beautifully written and the fact that you can change the outcome of the ending entirely based upon the decisions you make during your playthrough is brilliant! I have NEVER had a game literally make me cry, laugh, or be angry at a character before the way this game did. It's literally a Fantasy Action/Drama movie more than it is a game, and to me, that's its magic.

Unless I see something that really jumps out at me this won't be something I picked up. I bought The Witcher 3 on my PS4 and the frame rates tank hard in multiple spots and the combat is really dull and repetitive. Not to mention the open world is kind of... empty for lack of a better word. Idk, maybe its because I'm used to Bethesda games being packed full of tons of stuff but all in all I was disappointed. Not a terrible game but certainly not GOTY. I personally think the hype that exists for TW3 is because of the overall push against the big developers and DLC/micro transactions.

Anyways, I'm not sure if Deus Ex is considered cyber punk or not (I think it is but, you know I could be wrong) but that's what I'll be sticking with and looking forward to for that genre mainly because the combat is fun... again unlike Witcher... where each 4th button press restarts the exact same animation... and the blue water monster things have big ol' blue dingers flailing about when they attack... and I eat uncooked wolf liver to heal over 5 seconds because... you know... you're a Witcher... with catish looking eyes... and reasons.

@Am_Shaegar:

I would disagree with that. I found the Witcher had so much to do that outside of the main mission that I didn't really want it. There are so many points of interest on the map you run into one every few steps. The side quests are far better done from a storytelling point of view. They all had well-done cinematics and music to add to the atmosphere. Bethesda games all have really bad combat even though I enjoyed Skyrim. The Witcher 3s combat is closer to Dark Souls, but a bit more arcadey. I personally enjoyed it a lot. I also enjoyed the side game Gwent.

@Am_Shaegar: Bethesda games are packed full of bad uninteresting stuff though.. About 30% of the shit in those games are decent. There are side missions in the witcher 3 that have a better plot than the main questline of Skyrim.

@garvielt: I get what you're saying, and I'm not saying that the story of Witcher is bad or whatever. The way its presented just feels repetitive to me. That and I find the combat to be a weird mix of like... Dark Souls and, hell any generic third person hack and slash lol.

I think TW3 was just ok at best. I see the potential for this game and it is grand in scope, at least it is in my imagination of what could be. I can not wait to get some info on this game.

The only thing that could make the Witcher 3 better is a dedicated construction set module like the Elder Scrolls games. Give modders more liberty with the environment and sales will go up significantly. Geralt with his steel and silver swords is a lot of fun, but Geralt with two lightsabers would be awesome...

CDPR deserve more sales of their games, but i don't like that statement of theirs, because it would mean they will try and make Cyberpunk more "consumer friendly" which would almost most certainly mean, dumbing it down and making it as generic as possible so it would attract more sales.

All i hope for is that they DON'T learn anything from EA's and Activision's playbooks.

@deathblow3: It DOES work though... that's the scary part. How many Call of Duty games are there? 10? 15? People actually buy that, even though it's basically the counter-strike mod from Half Life 1, re-released over and over. If you stretched the content in all those games out to Witcher 3's content/production level, how many games would you have? Maybe two thirds of one game? ...for collectively about $1000.

Yeah, somehow it works.

Imo these guys do deserve more sales. 6 milion for a game like witcher 3, it's not enough. And this should be alarming not to the company itself but to the consumers. Games like COD that don't have half the effort this game had sell more. Ofc you will see more games like COD, anually released, because it's what sells. People don't appreciate games like these anymore, that's why companys like EA do what they do. You guys only have to blame yourselves for not buying games like the witcher 3, if you like rpg of course.

@jesuscondom: u r real late to the party dude, STALKER was sold like 800.000 times ... major success ... CoD or even Witcher 3 are like a big mac ..., it cost near to nothing to make and will return its value by factor one Million ... cause of the 'market'

imagine what Kind of game witcher could be if a reasonable amount of that Profit would have been spend on creating the game itself ... but truth is companys like these have Marketing Budget wich is at least 3 times bigger then the Budget they have to hire and pay the saff, wich is working on the game ...

u dont really want to know how much these free to Play games are generating in reality, every month, every week, every day and hour ...

There are characters that don't appeal to me and I don't play the games. For instance, I'm not that interested in playing the female character in Horizon Zero Dawn or many other games. They look a bit bland to me despite the games high reviews.

@skyhighgam3r: don't worry. See this other gamespot article: http://www.gamespot.com/articles/cyberpunk-2077-is-a-true-rpg-definitely-not-a-multiplayer-shooter/1100-6417357/

Studio CEO Marcin Iwinski said, "We are known for storytelling, and big game worlds, and so we’re taking all what we've learnt from previous three Witcher games, as well as the open-world aspect, and applying it to Cyberpunk 2077,...So yes, it is an all-out RPG game, but we're looking at having a lot of new gameplay elements that I cannot talk about yet. One thing I can say for sure is that it is definitely NOT a multiplayer shooter.""

@skyhighgam3r: Not a single chance, there's no reason for CD projekt to do it, quite the opposite, The Witcher 3 show that people still interested in good SP experiences. If they want to at least replicate the same success, it make sense for them to do the same kind of game.

What might happen is that they might do a MP mode since they actually experimented with MP on the Witcher franchise (I don't recall if it was TW2 or 3) but it didn't pass prototype phase. So a MP mode isn't out of their radar but MP-centric experience is very, very unlikely.

Coming out and saying this is concerning to me. Whenever companies (i.e.: suits) start thinking they need world-wide appeal, something is usually sacrificed in the process... And it's usually creativity.
