Cyberpunk 2077 "Even More Ambitious" Than Originally Planned

"We need to create a game that will be even more successful."

While official details on Cyberpunk 2077 are being kept largely under wraps, CD Projekt Red joint CEO Adam Kicinski has now revealed the game is "even more ambitious" than what the developer originally had in mind.

No Caption Provided

"The project is even more ambitious than we first planned (...) we need to create a game that will be even more successful," he said on Polish TV station TVN24 BiS, as translated by Gamepressure. "We have a long way ahead of us to reach the biggest commercial successes in the world."

Kicinski went on to say that The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt was a big success with 6 million copies sold against an $81 million budget. The game was a "good investment," according to CD Projekt Red management, but at the same time, The Witcher 3 won't end up being a worldwide chart-topper for the full year.

"Sure, many people consider The Witcher 3 to be the best game in the world this year, but this is not a game that broke any sales record," he explained.

Cyberpunk 2077 was announced in October 2012. Details on the game have been scarce, although CD Projekt Red did say that it was not planning to discuss the game until 2017 at the earliest. According to visual effects artist Jose Teixeira, "Cyberpunk is far bigger than anything else that CD Projekt Red has done before... far, far bigger."

CD Projekt Red is "focusing" on Cyberpunk 2077, though the developer continues to support its award-winning Witcher 3 with new content. The game's second paid expansion, Blood and Wine, comes out next year.

The day Cyberpunk 2077 system requirements are announced is the day I upgrade my PC

@Moonco: Wrong. You should upgrade one month before release. Many people upgraded their PCs when CDPR announced hardware requirements of TW3. And guess what - those people still regret their hasty attitude, because few months later, graphics cards and CPUs were cheaper.

I fear CD Projekt Red will no longer be a strong independent game studio. They'll be gobbled up by a huge publisher like EA, Take Two, and Bethesda. The more ambitious and bigger projects they work on, the more cash and resources they shall need and being an independent game studio in today's time will not cut it.

@hypnotika25: CD Projekt Red was NEVER an indie dev. They are owned by CD Projekt, the public company that also owns GOG. They are less indie than Valve.

Should their shareholders demand it, the studio will always be forced to do whatever it takes for sales. If Witcher 3 is only a "good investment" in their eyes, I'm actually a little worried as to what they are willing to do for a "great investment". It may finally be time to cash out on their goodwill.

@hypnotika25: CD Project is already their publisher. They are a very successful one, so I doubt they will need to sell the studio any time soon.

@hypnotika25: With their success and acclaim, not to mention they own GoG which is also a big success, I don't see why they would need to look for a buyer. If they keep this up they might become or found their own publisher.

@Vojtass: Bethesda seems to be slowly casualizing their games over time. Sure they're not as bad as many others, but the signs are there.

@Keaze_: Well I agree the combat system isn't the best ever, it's still pretty good with all the different interactions between attacks, spells, potions, bombs and the variety of enemies to fight. On higher difficulties it can become more strategic, I hope they add more design styles of Armor and Weapons in the future, either way it's still my favorite game to date.

@alaannn: That would have been very odd, especially when considering how Witchers fight. They made the combat fit the lore quite well. Lot of pirouettes and dodges. Don't think that would translate well to a first person game. Rather they stick to third person with the Witcher series. When you can pick both, one of the perspectives often suffers as seen in the new Fallout 4 game where third person is crap compared to first person.

So keen for this. I hope it will fill the hole that the cancellation of Prey 2 left me lol. Getting a similar vibe from the 2 games personally

CD Proyect Red is the ONLY dev company that are allowed to use the word "ambitious" on interviews when refering to something they're developing. All others are tottaly hyping and blshtting when they do.

@alaannn: Can't agree with that. Fallout is pretty much a casual FPS now... it has lost almost all it's rpg elements that made the game great.

@rolento25: I love Fallout 2, 3 & games like STALKER and disagree about FO4 being a disappointment. I think the vocal minority come out in full force the more popular a game gets, the transition happened when Minecraft was less well known.

@cyborg100000: Yeah it has its issues, but it is a damn fine game. Very few RPGs are as free as bethesda games. Witcher 3 may be one, if not my all time favorite game, but it does not have nearly the same freedom as in Skyrim or Fallout 4. There are things you can do in Bethesda games that you just can't in many others.... And well, mods is a key component to bethesda games. The fact that they pretty much design their games to be fully moddable is fairly ambitious. Wish they did the same for Witcher 3, as it is has mod support, but not close to the level Bethesda games has.
