Cyberpunk 2077 "Even More Ambitious" Than Originally Planned

"We need to create a game that will be even more successful."

While official details on Cyberpunk 2077 are being kept largely under wraps, CD Projekt Red joint CEO Adam Kicinski has now revealed the game is "even more ambitious" than what the developer originally had in mind.

No Caption Provided

"The project is even more ambitious than we first planned (...) we need to create a game that will be even more successful," he said on Polish TV station TVN24 BiS, as translated by Gamepressure. "We have a long way ahead of us to reach the biggest commercial successes in the world."

Kicinski went on to say that The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt was a big success with 6 million copies sold against an $81 million budget. The game was a "good investment," according to CD Projekt Red management, but at the same time, The Witcher 3 won't end up being a worldwide chart-topper for the full year.

"Sure, many people consider The Witcher 3 to be the best game in the world this year, but this is not a game that broke any sales record," he explained.

Cyberpunk 2077 was announced in October 2012. Details on the game have been scarce, although CD Projekt Red did say that it was not planning to discuss the game until 2017 at the earliest. According to visual effects artist Jose Teixeira, "Cyberpunk is far bigger than anything else that CD Projekt Red has done before... far, far bigger."

CD Projekt Red is "focusing" on Cyberpunk 2077, though the developer continues to support its award-winning Witcher 3 with new content. The game's second paid expansion, Blood and Wine, comes out next year.

First thing to do is to ditch at least X One, so the graphics could be on the bearable level. Would be great to make it PC only, but that's never going to happen, now that they've tasted the PS4 sales.

@Ripper_TV: you must be pretty dumb, try to think a little some time.

Witcher 3 looked the same on x one and ps4. Like all other multi platform games.

And it's all about optimization, look at the graphics in gta 5 on Xbox 360 and ps3 that was amazing on 10 year old consoles...

@Ripper_TV: So 30/40 million people can't enjoy a game just because you want it to look a little prettier for you? That's kind of selfish dude.. The game will still look amazing on PC and you know that.

They basically worked their asses off on the Witcher 3 to make a superior game, then gave it away with zero DRM. At 6 million sales they probably barely topped 30 million in profit for that project. All they are saying is they need to create a model where they can actually grow their company and presumably still please fans as opposed to tread water. Fun fact: Polish salaries are about 20% of US salaries. They are working at a huge disadvantage when it comes to being able to pay for international support. Anyone in the comments saying the Witcher was a "massive financial success" or that they are alarmed by "this change in mentality" has no grasp on reality, and should probably STFU regarding them wanting to increase revenue.

@Cataclysmic0001: Lets say for shiggles that up to half of the people who bought the game bought it on sale for half-off while half bought it at full price. So average value is $45. That's 6,000,000 x $45 = $270 million. $270 million - $81 million = $189 million. If you click the link above it says that that $81 million includes marketing costs as well as game development. You telling me that nearly $160 million dollars just went "poof"?

@Vambrotious: Firstly, $30 million profit means $111 million in revenue. So I'm saying $78 million off your figure went poof, yes. Do you really think they earn 100% of their revenue? Credit card processors, packaging, shipping, service fees by distribution platforms, taxes. Welcome to reality!

Turns out however that my estimate was clearly a bit pessimistic as it also says in that article "$62.5 million" was the net profit, not my estimated $30 million. That's not much at all for a title that got that much positive attention. Yes, they very much deserve to look for a better revenue model in my opinion.

EDIT: Oh, that $62.5 million figure... "most" of that came from Witcher 3. Not all of it.

That doesn't sound good. CD project image was always about customer careing not breaking records. Which translated into the massive success and praises the Witcher 3 had on both financially and publicity side. This change in mentality is very alarming.

@rayo_theking: Big games take big money to fund. It is a business after all and not some garage non-profit. You want investors, you show them the money otherwise they'll take their cash and invest elsewhere. That isn't to say those who have been hired aren't well intentioned customer focused employees.

@stlmemrie: they sold 6M copies. Which estimaltly means 300M $ income (lets say the game costs 50$ on average). The game developing costs 80M including marketing and that give 220M$ as a net profit. And in my humble opinion i can say that number is big. CDproject said we are after a csutomer trust businiess model and with all that profit and praises i think they are succeeding. Then why now they want to break records?! I think when you smell money you change after all.

@se007: Sorry for overreacting. :-)

I believe it is supposed to be Alt. She is a Netrunner (Hacker) who got her digital ghost trapped in the Net. I am sure probably got a body back by 2077. I could be wrong. The picture in the trailer, the billboard with the woman in kind of the pose as the woman being shot at, that is Alt in 2020.

Just makes me think they're gonna make a watered down game for mass appeal.

Good, looking forward to it.

And good games tend not to top any charts. Not that many take games seriously enough to enjoy something like Witcher 3. A lot of people like to just play something dumb like NHL or Call of Duty, it's familiar, easy and you can drop in/out at any time. Easy to pick up and leave whenever you wish. There's value in that, but I think it's games like Witcher 3 which really move the industry forward as a whole.

Too ambitious is not a good thing. Witcher 3 was really ambitious, but broken and full of bugs. It's like they tried to add as much content in the game as possible while rushing the game out of the door. The bugs really pissed me off.

@nurnberg: Witcher 3 is by far the least buggy open world game I have ever played. My first playthrough that clocked in at about 100 hours had not one quest bug out or any serious bugs happen. Still not had any quests bug out on me on later playthroughs. Perhaps I am lucky, but that is at least my experience.

Isn't 2077 an important year in Fallout 4 as well? Like, when all the bombs went off or something?

@Marsh87: Bioware games are trashy. Some of the characters are interesting, but it reminds me of playing a text based adventure game in the 80s or something. TEXT: (After a dark night searching the forbidden zone you wake up, having consumed half your rations) instead of actually playing it, you JUST READ it. No fun. The environments are always small and poorly designed, and the combat in their games is like half done. I think Dragon Age Inquisition was their best game and it still felt like a slogging collect-athon much of the time.

@megawalrus: They mostly use text in journals to give some backstory for those who are not familiar with the prequels or haven't read some of their books. But in Inquisition they did go over board a bit ;maybe they will have narration in future games.Inquisition has a significant of slogging but it does pay of in the end..but they could of limited the mmo aspects of the game and provided more meaningful things to do
