Crysis 3: Welcome to the (Urban) Jungle

One of Crysis 3's sci-fi superguns fires 500 rounds a second. That would be 30,000 rounds a minute, math fans, if you didn't have to reload after near enough every squeeze of the trigger. With each squeeze, the Typhoon assault weapon emits a low buzz and minces whatever is standing at the business end of the barrel--making it a sound and logical advance for futuristic weapon design, if not a great feat of imagination (why not 5,000 rounds a second, while you're at it).

That's a bit like the general approach for Crysis 3. Set in 2047, two decades after the end of Crysis 2, it closes out the Crysis shooter trilogy, says Crytek, setting aside stand-alone expansion Crysis Warhead. Where the first game was set on an island covered in tropical jungle and the second in the ruins of New York, Crysis 3 is set in the ruins of New York covered in tropical jungle. It's a neat and consistent kind of progression, if not a great feat of imagination.

The cybernetic alien Ceph and the human forces of corrupt private military outfit CELL return to be shot and stabbed by the nanosuited Prophet, who returns from the first game and from the dead (see Crysis 2) to exact vengeance on CELL for sealing New York under a dome in its quest for world domination. Prophet begins the game in a CELL facility, escapes, and ends up in New York's Liberty Dome, which was installed to capture Ceph and cleanse their presence with accelerated biological growth.

As a result of that growth, nature has reclaimed the city. Crytek says its city has undergone a full transformation, making it more of an "urban jungle" and less, say, like the New York of I Am Legend--a recognisable city overlaid with wilderness. The demo we're shown takes place at night in the remains of Chinatown, where Prophet arrives with Psycho (Brit protagonist of Crysis Warhead) nattering advice over his radio. The superpowered nanosuit's augmented visor display is familiar, tagging enemy fighters and the like.

As promised, there's more jungle than concrete to Chinatown. Swamps and leafy vegetation are more prominent than the occasional ruined buildings, though both look mighty pretty; the plentiful rays and detailed shadows come courtesy of an "enhanced" version of CryEngine 3. There, Prophet skulks around in the undergrowth with his Predator-like nanosuit cloak up, stealthing up to the bipedal Stalker Ceph and knifing them in the fleshy, unarmoured parts. His vengeful intentions manifest as post-kill quips addressed to no one in particular ("I'm going to kill you all one by one" and "We'll see who gets hunted").

Shooting from stealth is encouraged, too. Prophet's newest toy is the composite bow: a sleek, fold-out bow and a selection of arrow warheads not unlike Hawkeye-style trick arrows, with explosive, pointy, and electro arrowheads populating Prophet’s nanoquiver. With that bow, and from stealth mode, Prophet can silently skewer distant enemies, in keeping with Crytek's vision of Prophet as a hunter in the urban jungle.

Twang!
Twang!

Other weapons include those high-tech heavy weapons pinched from alien enemies, such as a heavy mortar called the highpoly. Other enemies include the Scorcher Ceph (small, crawling enemies that turn into flamethrower turrets when they halt and rear up) and Ceph aerial remotes (flying, seeking drones that strip off your stealth cloak). There's a new hacking mechanism, too, that lets you remotely reprogram enemy gun turrets, though don't expect a hacking minigame; the idea, says Crytek, is to add another battlefield element to strategise with, not to tack on a hacking puzzle system.

With our first look being a hands-off presentation, it's not possible yet to gauge how sandboxy the world and action of Crysis 3 will be, but at first blush it's flexible much in the same way as Crysis 2--far from free-roaming, but open to multiple plans of attack. Where and how much it does diverge from the last game, beyond the technobow and the New York jungle, we'll see as we go.

Crysis 2 did not impress me at all. I heard many crying Crysis 1 as far superior. Good luck with this game.

The bow looks badass. I know they might just be stretching out the same idea and drifting away from the original reason they started making this series. But the second was amazing in my opinion. It may have been a bit more linear in comparison to the first which was way more sandboxy. I have faith in this but if this turns to crap I think I will just start ignoring this series, despite how much I love it.

Maybe they should have stopped at Crysis 1. I really enjoyed that one, it was trully something new, both game mechanics, graphics and story. Crysis 2 bored me to death, it lost it's "sandbox" feel the first game had. The third part doesn't sound like something I'd buy either, unfortunatelly...

Unfortunately crysis developers/bosses lost their path ... once they were so much in technology and enhancements but now look at them all they want is dream to make money like COD/BF series by focusing on the multiplayer so they can have their small little shares besides the giants COD/BF3 ... so much focusing on consoles and multiplayer that was shamelessly copycat from COD plus some st*pid NANO suite thingy and NOW they are exactly following COD style, short development without enhancement or any redesign, all they want is to make fast cash just like COD... they forgot who they really are, a company that once bring the state of the Cryengine with such graphics that blow anyone's mind, look at them now after 4 years, they weren't able to even amaze their audience for once more. SHAME,

You guys may have liked Prophet, but everyone likes Nomad and Psycho more, and only hearing Psycho isn't enough, your story still makes no sense, the ceph were wiped out the second game in NY.

So much that I enjoyed the original Crysis, Crysis 2 was a big let down for me. Heck I didn't even finish the game, left it half way through. So Crysis 3 doesn't attract me that much either. But Far Cry 3 somehow does. I guess its the whole forest setting and the horizontal gameplay that is more exciting to me than the vertical implemented in Crysis 2 and perhaps a big part of Crysis 3 as well (note that its still set in NYC).

@nomee_lover you mean same visuals and same gameplay? I can understand the setting "change," but if Crysis 2 was meant to push the limits of consoles - what the hell is Crysis 3 going to do differently?

we have seen incredible graphics and sci fi setting in the previous editions, so not expecting any huge improvement, if EA wants to lure fans back to crysis series, they have to work on characters and storyline.

@nickyparmar92 And the same for me I do not own a PS3, but Resistance 3 looks interesting well that whole series looks interesting., and I have played Killzone 1 for a bit and from what I have seen on the last 2 Killzone's have not been the same since the first Killzone.

@nickyparmar92 I believe Halo: Reach came out in 2010 and the Halo game I think you referring to might be the HD remake of Halo: Combat Evolved Anniversary Edition which came out in 2011 last year. But yes I have to agree with you of the shooters that came out last year that Crysis 2's story was far better then all the other shooter's that came out last year and I have yet to play Gears 3.

i agreewith nickypalmer, the single player campaign was pretty epic. It gave u the lovely choice of stealth or hardore violence. The visuals were stunning and the concept stood alone! Howver, the multiplayer did lack alot, i didnt feel the single player attributes translated well to multiplayer. Still this game SHOULD be awesome.................

Personally for me I thought that Crysis 2 had the best single player campaign of 2011 beating MW3, Battlefield 3, and Killzone 3 in the FPS sector. I have no 360 so Halo Reach is something I cannot comment on, but Crysis 2 was awesome even if it was linear, I mean which FPS isn't knower days. No worries here thinking Crysis 3 will be anything but awesome.

Bring back Crysis 1 and I will be happy. Give me Crysis 2 the CoD clone and I will be upset again. I still enjoyed Crysis 2, but I didn't fall in love with it the way I did playing Crysis 1. Also to anyone that only has played the games on consoles, know that Crysis 1 on console isn't the same as it is on PC. Not simply due to graphics but the core gameplay is also changed. On the 360 version of Crysis 1 they used all the systems from the second game, such as your suit defaulting to speed mode and not armor. It is basically Crysis 2 on the maps of the first game.

still going to be multiplatform?? MAN! this is not gonna be good as Crysis. All I think about Crysis is that we need a beast to run it but multiplatform will kill it - same like previous Crysis 2 which a lot of people complained about its graphic, let aside for its boring story and abilities. Cryengine dead with Crysis 2 being multiplatform. We all know nowadays consoles can't provide the required performance anymore. EA killed a game again?

@GamerOuTLaWz Oh, I see you've played the game already, I am glad Crytek gave you an early copy! Though I do agree that from the previews I have seen so far, this looks like a CoDish copy/paste with a new gimmick production. Another thing that irked me is that they're releasing a 'NEW' Crysis on 'OLD' consoles without waiting a year or two for the next generation. I feel like EA's greed has finally consumed Crytek.

a huge disapointment just like the second. shltty ass boring linear campaign where you kill the same fng cephs all over without ever seeing any progression. Boring dialogs with a retard named Ghouls and graphics that'll be nowhere as beautiful as BF3. from this trailer all I can see is the same boring rehashed crysis 2 shlt, add a bow and a 3 after Crysis and you have this game.

this is same as crysis 2, having same GUI, O_o only with newer weapon. I don't find any improvement. crysis 1 in jungle. crysis 2 in city. ... crysis 3 in herbs growing in your apartment. _ BRAVO.
