Crackdown 3 to Include "100 Percent Destructible Environments"

A breakable playground.

The upcoming Crackdown sequel will include a fully destructible cityscape, Microsoft announced at its Gamescom 2015 press conference today.

The sequel, which is actually being called Crackdown 3 now, will feature "100 percent destructible environments," Microsoft and developer ReAgent said. The demo showed the superhuman cyborg police-officers demolishing entire buildings, toppling them and setting off a domino effect with nearby skyscrapers.

Crackdown 3 will also feature transforming vehicles, ReAgent said. The footage shown was taken from a pre-alpha build, with the sequel still slated for a 2016 release.

Did anyone else hear this and think that the tech sounds cool and everything, but knocking down buildings isn't really what Crackdown should be about?

@deathstream: Couldn't you pick up and throw cars in the first game? Sounds like wanton destruction is EXACTLY what this game is about.

You were like a cyber cop who had zero arrests and seven thousand target kills with a massive variety of lethal weapons and your fists/feet.

I'd say go play something else if you want to be a real cop but I honestly can't think of a single one last gen.

@jyml8582: I'd agree the second was a little bit of a let down. Least this one has a bigger sandbox which may mean more orbs...have to admit being obsessed in finding those!

Looks awesome, as long as I can't just shoot a building with an assault rifle, and have the building fall apart as if I was shooting it with an automatic grenade launcher...

But I am really looking forward to this. This is just another example of why I am happy we went with 2 xbox ones, and gaming PCs, instead of Ps4.

@robertcain: Yeah there has to be some kind of rebuilding the game does, unless you only get to take down large buildings at certain points, like missions.

Looks interesting, I will have to know more about the game before jumping on the hype train.

Also even though I know this is just in Pre-Alpha the destruction sequence didn't look as good as I expected, it looked more like Jenga blocks!

I hope its more like the first Crackdown. Ive been waiting for a game that had as much destruction as Red Faction: Guerrilla did.

So I believe this is going to be the first game to implement cloud processing?

I know in the demo today they threw out the 20x Xbox One power comment. Presumably it will be compulsory online to play in that case? Be interesting to see how well it works.

@Dannystaples14: I'm still expecting the large scale destruction to be set off only at specific pre-determined moments in the game. Maybe those destructions will be calculated in real-time with the help of the cloud, but I have a hard time believing they can make it work smoothly if we're just running around taking down structures and the cloud is constantly doing the processing.

@hystavito: I'd agree with you IF the game looked like Witcher 3 or something. BUT it still looks quite stylised and cartoony overall. My guess is that was to keep with the comic book style aesthetic of the games and keep the amount of processing needed as small as possible.

Not to mention in the footage we've seen so far the damage is impressive but the fragments which form from the explosions seemed quite bare bones. When compared to something like the original Red Faction and the hardware that it would have been playing on at the time and then Crackdown 3 and the Xbox One power plus cloud I am confident that it will be random destruction.

In an open world game where you are basically in turf wars with gangsters and can do what you want when you want but can't blow up buildings how you want when you want......I don't think that makes sense. The whole point of open world is freedom. Do what you want, when you want.

Well cloud processing is only like streaming a game. Only you run some of the game locally and some of it externally. The only limiting factor is how fast you can get the information to and from the servers across the internet. How well it works I guess we'll see when it comes out.

@Dannystaples14: Many games so far uses cloud processing. Some developers just wanted it to use it for AI opponents in Titanfall or big data AI in Forza Horizon and Forza 5. Depends on the devs.

@jimmydonegood: Well yeah but they've never used it for actual world construction though. Actually using it to expand the world and making things like massive destruction possible is directly impacting you as a gamer on a second by second basis.

Using it on bullet fodder in Titanfall or making NPC cars slightly less dumb in Forza is a massive waste if you ask me. Especially if you HAVE to be online because of it.

There should be a mission mode similar to Crash on Burnout. You have 60 seconds to destroy as much stuff as possible and get the high score.

@comb5: I soooo want a new burnout, Crash junctions were fun they need to bring them back. Don't get me wrong Forza looks amazing but all I want to do with 450 or so cars is smash'em burnout style, waaay more fun!

@draign: No because it is XBox One exclusive. The ps4 has sold 25 million units and its killing the XB1 so no need for games beyond BO3 and Destiny Timed DLCs.

I mean, that's impressive and all, but right now it's just people shooting explosives at things. That's not really fun gameplay.

I can already blow stuff up in Just Cause (to a lesser extent, yes, but you're still making things explode), except there are different objectives and you also have a grappling hook, you can drive and ride on top of vehicles and you have parachutes and other cool stuff.

So what does Crackdown 3 have over Just Cause 2 or 3?

@Tiwill44: Well doesn't Crackdown have the ability to upgrade yourself for super jumps, fast movement, strength, etc? I'm pretty sure that separates it from Just Cause 2 and 3.

@Dannystaples14: lol i told people that when all the fuzz about Xbox one was announced ect about how it would use the "Cloud" to make games "Better" and if Crackdown 3 have a online requirement ( probably gold requirement to) just to play single player i think a lot of people will be very unhappy xD but the 100% Destruction is for Online Matches Only (death match ect) thats what they said in the Gameplay Trailer

@deathstream: You don't need PS+ to play Destiny online solo though. You can (or at least could the last time I tried) play patrol and story without PS+. Strikes, PvP and Raids were locked.

But you could run around on all of the maps for free.

Crackdown was a great game, it was one of the first to bring a great "super-hero" formula to games. Crackdown 2 was just more of the same and not really worth it, i am looking foward for this Crackdown, i like the destruction of buildings idea. i hope they gives us a great game.
