As promised, Valve has today released Counter-Strike version 1.6 via its Steam content-delivery application, which is available in beta form on Steampowered.com. The 1.6 download is currently only available directly from Valve's Steam servers. Unfortunately, Valve announced shortly after the initial release that its Steam content servers reached their bandwidth maximum, and that applications for the Steam 2.0 beta would be suspended until additional servers could be put online.

The free update to the popular multiplayer shooter includes two new weapons, a counterterrorist tactical shield, a new map called de_airstrip, and revamped versions of two old maps, de_inferno and de_aztec.
