Control Deluxe Edition Players Get Ultimate Edition Upgrade, Then Have It Removed

Players briefly had access to the version that would have allowed them to upgrade to next-gen for free, but it seems to have been a mistake.

Last month, Control publisher 505 Games confirmed that the game's Ultimate Edition version, which bundles the original title with two expansions, will be the only way to get a free upgrade to the PS5 and Xbox Series X/S versions without re-purchasing the game. At the time, 505 said this was an option it chose because it couldn't bring all current-gen players to next-gen platforms and framed it as avoiding "leaving any one group out." That's what makes the latest development in the story so confusing.

Users on the gaming forum ResetEra reported that despite owning the Deluxe Edition of the game, which is not the same as the Ultimate Edition, they found they had been upgraded to it anyway. A short time later, this was revoked, and they were reverted back to the previous version of the game. It looks like more than one group is getting left out.

505 Games' decision to not offer any sort of upgrade path for most Control players was controversial because it wasn't just the base game that would need to be transferred. It has received two substantial expansions, and with performance issues on current-gen systems sometimes affecting framerate, it's expected that the next-gen experience will be superior. Some of Remedy Entertainment's games this generation have also had issues with textures not loading properly, which is due to the game engine being used.

Several other game publishers have announced either discounted or completely free game upgrades to next-gen platforms. Ubisoft is doing this with nearly all its upcoming games, including Watch Dogs Legion and Far Cry 6, and despite releasing in 2015, The Witcher 3 will get a free upgrade, as well. Activision's Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War is priced at $70 on Xbox Series X/S and PS5, but this package also includes access to the last-gen version, effectively making the upgrade cost $10.

Wasn't it supposed to be impossible to give the upgrade for free?

What's next though? Every piece of DLC requires you to buy the main game again to get the patch? Shit, probably shouldn't give the suits any ideas... but who am I kidding, that's bush league avarice for this industry. They've already made plans to sell the idea to us... like 70 dollar games this upcoming gen and a blue skin for a fucking gun is worth 20-30 bucks this gen.

I was supposed to wait until next gen but i decided to buy the Deluxe edition right after I heard there will going to be a free upgrade. They changed it when they re packaged the game as Ultimate edition.

This company is greedy, I won’t buy their games anymore until they proved not.

Should this surprise anyone knowing they took Epic's exclusivity deal on PC, thus screwing over people who prefer Steam and GOG over EGS? Console gamers are now getting the same treatment PC gamers got when the game originally launched.

Its as easy as upgrading the digital licence to the newer version and just requiring you to keep the disk to have it open the same as BC titles work if your running a physical copy. Their excuse has been bullshit since they announced it and no one should be supporting it. I'd been holding off on grabbing it to play it on next gen to tide me over till some newer stuff comes out but now its just in the avoid pile of shit.

@deth420: The Epic Exclusivity deal should have served as a warning to everyone to not trust this developer. There's a group on Steam that's against the spoiled brat of PC gaming. If you want to keep track of it, here.

@deth420: to be fair its a pretty weak tie in. Its about as much of a crossover as if Ronald McDonald showed up for about 5 minutes just to hear Jesse say something like, "Wow, arent you the famous mascot of that super cool burger place?" Then goes off to do something tangentially related by fighting burgers, or a burger themed series of side quests.

@deth420: You realize that Remedy has no control (no pun intended) over this right? Not supporting a Dev because of something their publisher did is very idiotic.

@bananasnbullets:You need to vote with your wallet and unfortunately in a case like this the developer is just collateral damage. Besides, its not like you can prove who was responsible for the decision until someone comes out to clarify it, so best stance is simply to show both companies you won't support practices like this.
