Confirmed: 400,000 PS3s for US launch

[UPDATE 5] US Sony reps confirm scaled-down November 17 debut; Japan to get only 100,000 on November 11. Worldwide 2006 ship target now 2-2.4 million units--1-1.2 million of which will be for North America.

This morning in Tokyo, Sony Computer Entertainment president Ken Kutaragi announced that only 500,000 PlayStation 3s would be available in the US and Japan at launch, and that the console's European debut had been pushed back until 2007.

Of the 500,000 launch PS3s, 100,000 will go on sale in Japan on November 11, and 400,000 will hit store shelves in North America on November 17. "We decided to focus on the Japanese and US markets," Kutaragi told reporters at a Tokyo press conference before apologizing for the delay, according to the Associated Press. Reuters echoed the numbers and said that Kutaragi had lowered the worldwide 2006 PS3 shipment target from 4 million to 2 million.

When initially contacted by GameSpot about today's PS3 news, Sony reps said only that the company had "not announced specific ship numbers for Japan or North America." They also said that, despite the European delay and the reports of reduced shipment numbers, the previous estimates still stood. "[We] have announced that 2 million will be available in the world come November 11 and 17, and 4 million by the end of the calendar year," said a spokesperson.

However, later in the day, Dave Karraker, SCEA's newly appointed head of corporate communications, told GameSpot that the wire-service figures were correct. "400,000 is just the day-of-launch figure," said the executive. "1 to 1.2 million units [will be] available in North America by December 31." This afternoon, Karraker confirmed the reduced international numbers to The Rocky Mountain News. "Worldwide, there will be between 2 to 2.4 million units available in North America and Japan by the end of the year," he said.

Karraker also claimed that, while reduced, the US PS3 launch numbers bested those of another next-generation console. "By the end of the year, we will have...more than double what Microsoft sold through of Xbox 360 [in 2005]." He reiterated this sentiment to MTV News. "The supply we have at launch is comparable to what was available for the PlayStation 2, not Xbox 360," said Karraker. "The total allocation for units in North America...is just less than what we had for PS2 and more than Microsoft had for Xbox 360."

Both the PS2's October 2000 launch and the 360's November 2005 debut were plagued by widespread sellouts, long lines, and occasional scuffles at US retailers. Sony estimates it had around 500,000 PS2s available day of launch. By contrast, NPD reported that Microsoft sold around 326,000 units by the end of November 2005. However, the hard-to-find next-gen console moved just another 281,000 units during December, bringing the 2005 total to around 607,000 units--half the number of PS3s Sony believes it will sell this year in North America.

Speaking to MTV News, Karraker urged calm among prospective PS3 purchasers. "People shouldn't fixate on the day-one allocation number," Karraker he said. "They should instead be more interested in the overall units available through the holidays, which will be 1 million to 1.2 million, which are significant amounts that will provide retail supply week over week with no dips in available stock." This was likely a veiled reference to the fact that many 360 retailers did not have the console in stock for weeks--or months--after it went on sale.

Though the flurry of various launch figures was initially confusing, one thing has always been perfectly clear. Sony is officially sticking to its original PS3 sales estimates for its current fiscal year, which ends on March 31, 2007. "The previously announced PlayStation 3 shipment forecast of 6 million units globally within the fiscal year ending 2007 is not changed," the company said in a statement issued early this morning.

Karraker also offered an explanation for the PS3's European delay and US-Japanese supply problems. "The PlayStation 3 is a revolutionary, as well as evolutionary, product. If we were simply putting out PlayStation 2.1, it would be much easier to hit a worldwide launch," he said. "As it was, Ken Kutaragi set very ambitious goals for the PS3, based on what he felt we could achieve. The simple fact is that many of the components for the PS3, particularly the blue laser diode, had never been produced on a mass scale before."

The blue laser diode is a critical component of the high-capacity Blu-ray Disc drive that is at the center of the PS3. Sony is pushing the cutting-edge format, which can hold up to 50GB on a single-layered disc, to be the high-definition successor to the DVD format. Microsoft is backing a rival format, HD-DVD, and will offer an external HD-DVD drive this fall.

But for all of Blu-ray's promise, manufacturing players for the format has proven more than a little problematic. In February, Sony hinted blue laser diode production problems could delay the PS3 from its then-scheduled Spring 2007 launch. The new November launch date was confirmed at Sony's Electronic Entertainment Expo press conference in May, the same month Sony announced the US launch of the Blu-ray format had been pushed back. Meanwhile, in July, several Taiwanese business newspapers, including the Commercial Times, reported that Sony was falling behind in production of blue laser diodes, although Sony would not confirm those reports.

Analysts were swift in their response to the PS3 news. UBS's Michael Wallace predicted the delay could have an alarming ripple effect with third-party publishers. "We also think this delay could cause some of our companies to push some of their PS3 games out until March 2007 to take advantage of a larger installed base," he said in a statement. "We note that Activision (three launch titles), Electronic Arts (four to five launch titles), and Take-Two (three titles by January 2007) currently have the greatest exposure to the PS3 at launch, so they could be impacted the most by this delay."

Today's PS3 developments caused Wedbush Morgan Securities' Michael Pachter to lower his entire US annual software sales estimate--just issued yesterday--from three percent growth to two percent. He also tweaked his European annual game-sales estimate from one percent growth to a one percent loss. "Our prior forecast assumed that Sony would ship 2.3 million PS3s to the US and Europe in 2006," said Pachter. "Our revised forecast assumes shipments of 1.5 million to the US (unchanged) and zero to Europe (down from 800,000)."

Needless to say, the PS3's delay and any supply issues will be a boon to Sony's rivals, Nintendo and Microsoft. "There will undoubtedly be some 'substitution effect' from lower PS3 shipments, with a portion of the shortfall offset by higher sales of PlayStation 2, Xbox 360, and Wii hardware and software," Pachter said. "We have not adjusted our model to reflect this substitution...but we suspect that 25 to 50 percent of the shortfall in PS3 software sales (an estimated $124 million in Europe) will be offset by sales of software for the other platforms."

Honestly, I have always liked the 1st 2 generations of Playstation. I never planned on buying a PS3 at launch in the first place, but with every passing press release from the Sony camp I am finding myself less and less likely to buy a PS3 at all. It is lookng like that much $ is going to better spent towards a new PC once DX10 is released in the next year.

Sony are basicly decreasing the supply of PS3's inorder to increase its demand, its kinda expected as the launch price is pretty high in comparisson to other consoles (360 and the GC). I think Sony are trying to decrease the supply in order to compensate for the high price of a PS3 therefore increasing the demand. However it cld go horribly wrong like it did with the 360, where there was so little supply tht ppl decided not to buy 1, or brought one and it melted, or in1 case brought 1 and smashed it to hell mwhahaaha! But the fact that sony pushed back the europe release date cld proove to b a hudge mistake and could mean sony loose a hudge chunk of the market to Nintendo an MS, for example the GC was the last new gen console to b released and as a result came last in the console wars! In short this is extremly risky for Sony and theres a high chance of it going horribly wrong lol

it's funny how everytime Sony comes out with a major press release about the PS3, they find some way to slide in a comment or two about the opposition. Sony's constanly banging on the 360, starting with their Xbox 1.5 crap.... in all this time, i can't really think of anything purely negative that MS has had to say about sony, or anything that stands out as prominently as Sony's remarks have. Not only have they made bad business decisions over the past few years, (don't argue...you know it's true fanboys) their PR department seems to be staffed entirely by teenages hopped up on Red Bull. WTF. I'm not a Sony hater, but their neverending slams on MS make them look pathetic. When's that Katurgi guy gonna get fired anyway, other than the fact that Sony's really making a PS3, has he said a single thing that's actually panned out to be true, He should get canned and the guy that hasn't fired him yet should be walking out right next. For all you MS haters out there, c'mon..you gotta admit it...they're doin it right.

let's just look at sony's attempts at trying to push a new format onto consumers. Betamax, a failure. Minidisc, a failure. UMD, a failure. Blu-ray, hhhmmm, let me think!!!!

Now children. Let's wait for the damned thing to come out before we start complaining about it. NO ONE HERE COULD POSSIBLY KNOW IF THE PS3 IS "BROKEN." I am not a fanboy or anything and this news is indeed grim, but I feel that the only people complaining about it are 360 owners in an attempt to justify their purchase.

like anything that deals with electronics the first couple will have some bugs so i think i will wait for a wile before getting a ps3(more time to save money for it so its not a problem :)) any way i don't think many people will get a ps3 right off the bat, but wait till some games come out for it (besides what good is a console if there are no worth wile games to play on it :P ) so 400k might not be a problem even tho it does sound like an extremely low number considering, but when the better games start coming out I'm sure that the sails will increase dramatically.

Please - the launch estimates almost always off when it comes launch date. Most of the time if they forecast a system to have "X" amount of units in play a couple of months after launch, they'll maybe have two-thirds of that number actually be in play at the projected date. There's simply too much that could go wrong by or after the launch date. If they are already saying that they are going to ship less than expected, trust me, it's going to be even worse come November / December. Betting on Blu-Ray, pricing the system at $600 and now acknowledging up front that the lauch is going to suck ass and there isn't going to be nearly enough systems to meet demand? Right as the Wii is debuting for less than $250 and the already impressive Xbox360 has a blockbuster software month (November - Gears of War, Call of Duty 3, FEAR, etc.)? Sony have lost their minds. WHERE'S THE GOOD NEWS?????!?!?!?!?!

This is not good for sony I think, as in the text above, the third parties gonna push back themselves and wait till they know what will happen to ps3, and that means, well, not much games, and everything else. I think sony is heading for selling all the consoles at the launch date, look at the crowd at the US and Japan, there is not 500,000 of people want the ps3? yes there is, so they gonna sell them all.... but 500,00 is nothing, NOTHING! I say it, This is not good news, NOT GOOD.

I am disappointed in Sony. First and foremost, I am waiting for the price to drop, for the bugs and foolishness to be fixed, and for the games to be released in the future. All launch date games for a system always suck. There are only a couple that are really worth playing. When things settle down and chaos turns to order, PS3 will most likely come out victorious for its full backwards compatibility and fan loved RPGs and action games exclusively for PlayStation. However, a Wii is looking good for a Fall/Winter season for me until Sony wakes up and smells the coffee . . .

For all those wondering about the skewed Japan/USA launches, it doesn't supprise me. I suspect it is directly tied to the fact that 360 is doing well in USA, while still facing challenges in Japan.... obviously, they are focusing on what they believe to be the most threatened market first.

Cerza The dreamcast was the easiest to develop for if i recall, which is why so many ports and crap games came out for it. And when that died and people got the ps2, then the devs had time to pour out the crap games. So yeah, you are right there :) forgot to mention that detail. But the original xbox was certainly not difficult to develop for, its basically pc parts and raw power. No limitations or anything. Sega just simply ported most of its games over to it. Because of the masses of people owning a ps2, devs decided to invest their money and time getting round the ps2 dev kits, and then once it was sussed, out come the games, and they came with real cheap and varied prices and quality aswell. Devs didnt choose xbox, not because ps2 was the easiest to develop for, but because ps2 was out a year already, and devs already got the ps2 sussed. And the ps2 price dropped too, so its easier for a dev to think "ah, i release my game to MORE people!! waahahah!". The xbox was more expensive then, and people didnt see a need for a hard drive. The xbox was a hard sell at the time. Because ps2 had things the xbox had, people loved the controllers, people liked the smaller lighter design, and it had more games.. Now.. its.. freaking backwards! ps3 is last generations xbox story all over again. Except now, nintendo arent "kidding" around.. But i cant see this happening for the ps3. The discs and game costs will be far more expensive in the long run. dev kits are more expensive, and i certainyl dont think it will be any easier than the already YEAR established 360, with its windows-esque dev kits, pc like hardware etc. PLUS, if the wii is easy to develop for aswell.. the race is on basically. i think, in the long run, the wii will have the most titles because of the simpler graphic structure (not that its going to be crappy graphics, but simpler than 360) smaller disc space to contend with (not like ps3, with the ability to fill up the space with more content = longer dev times = less games released). I think ps3 will have the fewest titles because of the amount of users compared to the competition would be smaller, much smaller, and the game prices would be higher and sony would be taking that extra cash to the bank, not the developers..

I consider myself an Xbox gamer but I don't want Sony to die. What first party am I going to hate on if Sony dies? I love Nintendo to much to hate them. Think about it Xbox and Nintendo Fanboys who are you going to annoy with annoying and pointless posts about how you hope Sony will lose and crash and burn if it dies. So think about that next time you bash Sony.

"00al2003 King_Dodongo mentioned that the PS2 is still selling better than Xbox because of fanboys?!?!? you could not be more wrong. Did you forget that maybe just maybe people want to play other games other than Ninja and the other handful of good xbox games (i agree those are good). Thats why thru gamers step into the blue zone, theyve got crabbings only Sony can satisfie." i think he was quoting me,unless we're talking about different post...so i'll respond. the only advantage the ps2 had over the xbox was name recognition and installed base.we would have all been better off with the superior system[xbox] as gamers imo if it wasnt for all of the casuals and fanboys scooping up the ps2[which gave it strong dev support].not just because it was more powerfull and was capable of better visuals[although thats nice]....how about the fact it was a better value all arround, with the built in hardrive, four controller ports, better surround sound and hd capabilities, easier to develop for,etc,etc,etc.... the ps2 became the top dog[as far as units sold]because of the popularity of the ps1[which i loved],not because it was a good system.so in a way you have a point...but the only advantage the ps2 had over the xbox was its head start and popularity[thus strong dev support] which was built on name recognition and not merit imo. atleast shadowweaver and king dodongo get it.

I'm not in the least bit surprised, or interested for that matter. SONY, I loved PS1 and PS2, but you lost me when you stated the ungodly price tag of this new mechanical abomination of yours at E3. The price tag is way to high, I can think of a lot more things to do with that much money, like buy a beater car for instance and fix it up for a derby, or dirt race, or something... And GrimBee, you brought up some goods points, but the reason so many people developed for the PS2 in the beginning is because it was the easiest of the three systems to develop for. As a result, the games just started pouring out like crazy, which had a major influence on the customer who was busy trying to decide which of the three systems to buy. Obviously most people went with the PS2 cause it had games coming out for it everyday, as opposed to the game cube which was like one a month, and Xbox which was like a couple a month.

gamefan.. wow. thanks for the vid news. Sheesh!! Someone should upload this video to gamespot for sure, see how many comments it gets LOL If the bbc broadcasted it.. it must be bad news. I didnt see any news like this when the ps2 was launching, especially not that negative. its amazing though, half the population believes that the ps3 is going to be cheap! I mentioned to many people about the wii or the 360 and their ps3 bias is uncanny. "nah mate, im getting a ps3 mate, its much better". then i say "you know how much its going to be right? ...425 quid.. xbox is already 199, and you could like get the wii ANd the 360 for that you know".. they just say, "oh, thats a bit steep.. but i still might get one for christmas though so im not worried". Ah, but now i have some more ammo for their biased minds. "its not coming out for christmas my friend"... they will be standing there, whilst everyone in the gaming world gets dead rising, gears of war, mario galaxy, zelda twilight, a ds with new super mario bros.. the list goes on. All other people can do is count their pennies to how much just the ps3 ALONE will cost, whilst the gamers of the world count their pennies and how many games they can get from their hard earned cash.

"cesare 00al2003 - Someone with a mind! Xbox and the 360 are more powerful machines but as "Hardcore Gamers", you Xbox fans must know it is more than visuals that make a good game? Why do you think it is we enjoy playing retro and classic games? Game play! Sony brought a lot of that to the industry and with so many various titles in was bound to succeed and might still, depending on what games are released in the next few years. " In the words of Dr evil.. "riiiiight". Sony didnt bring you those classic games. Third party developers did. If graphics didnt count, then why is ps3 boasting about having the best graphics? Sony didnt bring JACK to the industry. They just brought a platform, that everyone bought, and played games other developers made for us to buy. The argument at hand, people saying sony did themselves up the shtinker, is that because of the setbacks, price, and bad news from the ps3 (and complete lack of titles that are interesting to make you pay the freaking $600 for it) .. people are beginning to see sony for what they are. A company, trying to make money. It IS gameplay that makes a game. And i say, the person to win your point would be nintendo.Because they have their heads set right on the gameplay. You would be able to play ALL those games. ALL of them, on day one. And at a VERY awesome price. And the new controller just makes things more awesome. The 360, is trying its best as a next gen console. Its getting its price right, its getting the games down on the right path, and its on a path to get into everyones homes. Sony however, from day one, has not even attempted to achieve this. All consoles now, begin at around the $300 price mark, as Kevin and his great two cents mentions. And for ANY console to succeed, to get into everyones home, to get developers (which are the most important things here) to get the games to you, they are going to make a profit some how, and deliver their games to MILLIONS of people.. not 400,000. Developers who make these great games develop great games for consoles which everyone has. This is why they release the games for that platform in the first place. The more people, the more games. I mean, come on, you saw how the ps2 went. No matter what the graphics, company name, controller, disc space, load speeds, internet connectivity.. if more people own that console for some reason, the games are going to exist MOSTLY for that console. Ps2, inferior to BOTH the gamecube and the xbox in specs. However, because people liked the ps1, and because the ps2 had a great campaign (dvd player, BC with ps1 games, nice price with included dvd player) it sold like nobodys business. BUT, ps3 has in NO WAY generated the buzz like the ps2 had. Its not even going to be released for the same price. Ps3 is offering you things you dont need. ps2 offered dvd, as an alternative to video tapes. ps3 offers you blu ray, as an alternative to dvd.. and its also got to compete with hd dvd... Its just too much competition for sony to get any market hype, and not only that, its far too expensive to be competetive, and they dont even have enough units to sell But lets look at this. Sony WILL sell out their units. ANY console sells that much. The gamecube sold WAY more than 400,000 when released. And thats saying something given the competition right?? But by the time it gets to europe and the rest of the world. the rest of the world has had time to wake up and realise that the wii and the 360 is far more popular "my friends had one for christmas, and its only £199.. not like a ps3 which is £450.. please get me one!). Once the user base has broadened by the FAR cheaper competiton, its only safe to think that the ps3 will not get that amount of users for the ps3. Its not going to drop its price, its not coming out til march for the rest ofthe world. And even THEN there will be shortages all over the place. Once the user base is established with the wii and the 360, developers will make their games for those consoles.. Out comes halo 3, gta 4, out comes resident evil 5, out comes exclusive wii titles, and LOADS more announced for both consoles. People will start caring about all those games then. Just like they did with the ps2. The xbox lost out, because as soon as loads of people bought the ps2 and developers wanted to take advantage of that volume of people, people didnt care about whether resi was on gamecube, or xbox was 4 times more powerful. What matters is the games. And With the ps3, you wont get ANY games til march, you wont get to play ANY games unless you have $600. If you are a true gamer, and play games for the gameplay and experiences and wonderful graphics, get the consoles which arent giving you a bum deal. Get the consoles which will get the games to you in the cheapest, best possible way. And thus far, this is the wii and the 360 which are doing this. Sony are just making a pigs ear out of the gaming industry.

sarsel - if a 360 is 7 sep, then a ps3 is 11 sep. now if you are a gamer you like good games right? xbox 360 has many more games that are good. the reason why playstation 2 had alot of games was because it came out at the right time to get the people who make the games on their side. xbox 360 is in that exact same situation where they already have the people making games for their new system on their side. there will not be as many people with a ps3 as their was last time, so many people who make games will either make them for all consoles, or for the most popular, which is xbox 360, not only because i like xbox 360, but because of $$$.

come ON! what are they DOING?! am i the only one that saw this coming?? sony is just making fools of themselves by trying to rush out this system. the bottom line is that they dont have enough units, and not enough developers have games that are ready. what are they trying to do? they should just push the whole system release back. it's just ridiculous.

i hope that all goes well with Nintendo's launch and that they release the Wii for a nice low affordable price so that the people who want a PS3 because it's the lattes thing out or for what ever ridiculous reason other than it's going to be the ultimate gaming machine out there. With good quality titles(exclusive or multi platform) go out and pick one up. This will leave enough PS3's for us to get one with out any problems. maybe later on when everybody see that the guys/ gals with the PS3s are having more fun then the will go out and buy one when there is more available. I predict Sony having a slow start and then gradually climbing back to the top of the gaming world. yeah the 360 's graphics may be on par with the PS3 (or so they say) but there is more to great games than just great graphics witch both systems have. but the ability to run great games with really good physics and all that good stuff including a good on line network witch Sony will lock down this time around i don't see why the ps3 will fail. MS,Sony and Nintendo can all do well because they cater to different audiences but to all gamers

@ LegionOSH If you check the prices for both Blu-ray and HD-DVD movies you will see that they are the same. Both are hovering around the $25 mark right now. The players are only expensive because this is still a new format. Just like all new formats when they are new, next year the prices for players and movies will come down to a reasonable level. Then the format war can really start. I think most people here are not reading into this article enough. 400,000 is the DAY ONE number of consoles that will be available. By Dec. 31, there will be 1 to 1.2 million PS3's shipped to the US alone. Thats plenty of units.

LegionOSH - man you are getting richer and richer with every post! :) I am with you hoping that HD-DVD wins against blu-ray because sony has been so hell bent on making those royalties its not even funny. I heard they even had a pre-UMD format they tried to release against VHS and lost. The thing is, they don't want to pay what it costs to get the licenses for the encoding that it takes for a new media format to be released (HD-DVD). They would rather scam kids into buying a half-a$$'d gaming machine/movie machine that uses their specific format for the media royalties. They should have just put the cost of PSP, and PS3 into the next gen media format as it is pretty clear that presenting a new media format is their primary goal. And I have also heard that the HD-DVD quality is alot better the blu-ray. Even without the extra space. Its pretty odd how blu-ray needs all that space and HD-DVD uses alot less with better graphics. Can't wait for my $100 HD-DVD addon for my 360! :)

Man, today was a double whammy for Sony fans. First the European delay and now this. Also, I wonder what Japan is thinking that one of their companies will allot significantly more systems to the "west" than for their own country...

00al2003 - Someone with a mind!

Sony is really opening the door for Nintendo and MS. Nintendo especially. Just imagine if Nintendo anounces that they will have 3 million ready on launch day with a $199 price tag.

rl_41 ***I sware it's been nothing but negative news for Sony since E3... they need to get something right, fast, or else they'll have to go back to their pre-playstation days... but then again, PS3 could become huge in a few years, especially if bluray succeeds... remember, launch isnt everything*** True launch is indeed not everything but recently is has been a decent idication of a console possible future sales. Still once the PS3 drops in price (though that could be a LONG time coming) people will feel far less stressed over buying the PS3. Like it or not to drop $600 for a console has yet to work in this market. That is by no means chump change. People can start blabbing off inflation numbers compared to years past till the cows come home, but the fact is the past few generations have launched around the $300 price point (even the 360 core was $300, and only lacked the hard drive for downloads and backwards compatibility, otherwise it IS AN XBOX 360. It will PLAY EVERY 360 GAME ON THE MARKET...) Blu-Ray may well succeed, but I am honestly hoping HD-DVD wins. The discs seem to cost less, the players cost less, the output quality (from current reviews on the web) is just AS good if NOT BETTER than Blu-Ray, not to mention the supposedly easily scratched discs, despite Sonys attempts and coating them to prevent that...what is not to like about HD-DVD except the disc don't hold quite as much as Blu-Ray? (15GB VS 25GB) Of course Sony is banking on Blu-Ray, they get royalties from EVERY Blu-Ray disc sold if I heard correctly. Why wouldn't they push it (I wasn't aware Blu-ray was aroudnin 2003, found an old PC mag that had a review of a Blu-Ray unit for Japan..suprised me)...they could stand to do very well from Blu-Ray sales.. ..it would just be nice if the discs weren't so darned expensive.. My 6.32 cents, Kevin legionosh@msn.com
