Confirmed: 400,000 PS3s for US launch

[UPDATE 5] US Sony reps confirm scaled-down November 17 debut; Japan to get only 100,000 on November 11. Worldwide 2006 ship target now 2-2.4 million units--1-1.2 million of which will be for North America.

This morning in Tokyo, Sony Computer Entertainment president Ken Kutaragi announced that only 500,000 PlayStation 3s would be available in the US and Japan at launch, and that the console's European debut had been pushed back until 2007.

Of the 500,000 launch PS3s, 100,000 will go on sale in Japan on November 11, and 400,000 will hit store shelves in North America on November 17. "We decided to focus on the Japanese and US markets," Kutaragi told reporters at a Tokyo press conference before apologizing for the delay, according to the Associated Press. Reuters echoed the numbers and said that Kutaragi had lowered the worldwide 2006 PS3 shipment target from 4 million to 2 million.

When initially contacted by GameSpot about today's PS3 news, Sony reps said only that the company had "not announced specific ship numbers for Japan or North America." They also said that, despite the European delay and the reports of reduced shipment numbers, the previous estimates still stood. "[We] have announced that 2 million will be available in the world come November 11 and 17, and 4 million by the end of the calendar year," said a spokesperson.

However, later in the day, Dave Karraker, SCEA's newly appointed head of corporate communications, told GameSpot that the wire-service figures were correct. "400,000 is just the day-of-launch figure," said the executive. "1 to 1.2 million units [will be] available in North America by December 31." This afternoon, Karraker confirmed the reduced international numbers to The Rocky Mountain News. "Worldwide, there will be between 2 to 2.4 million units available in North America and Japan by the end of the year," he said.

Karraker also claimed that, while reduced, the US PS3 launch numbers bested those of another next-generation console. "By the end of the year, we will have...more than double what Microsoft sold through of Xbox 360 [in 2005]." He reiterated this sentiment to MTV News. "The supply we have at launch is comparable to what was available for the PlayStation 2, not Xbox 360," said Karraker. "The total allocation for units in North America...is just less than what we had for PS2 and more than Microsoft had for Xbox 360."

Both the PS2's October 2000 launch and the 360's November 2005 debut were plagued by widespread sellouts, long lines, and occasional scuffles at US retailers. Sony estimates it had around 500,000 PS2s available day of launch. By contrast, NPD reported that Microsoft sold around 326,000 units by the end of November 2005. However, the hard-to-find next-gen console moved just another 281,000 units during December, bringing the 2005 total to around 607,000 units--half the number of PS3s Sony believes it will sell this year in North America.

Speaking to MTV News, Karraker urged calm among prospective PS3 purchasers. "People shouldn't fixate on the day-one allocation number," Karraker he said. "They should instead be more interested in the overall units available through the holidays, which will be 1 million to 1.2 million, which are significant amounts that will provide retail supply week over week with no dips in available stock." This was likely a veiled reference to the fact that many 360 retailers did not have the console in stock for weeks--or months--after it went on sale.

Though the flurry of various launch figures was initially confusing, one thing has always been perfectly clear. Sony is officially sticking to its original PS3 sales estimates for its current fiscal year, which ends on March 31, 2007. "The previously announced PlayStation 3 shipment forecast of 6 million units globally within the fiscal year ending 2007 is not changed," the company said in a statement issued early this morning.

Karraker also offered an explanation for the PS3's European delay and US-Japanese supply problems. "The PlayStation 3 is a revolutionary, as well as evolutionary, product. If we were simply putting out PlayStation 2.1, it would be much easier to hit a worldwide launch," he said. "As it was, Ken Kutaragi set very ambitious goals for the PS3, based on what he felt we could achieve. The simple fact is that many of the components for the PS3, particularly the blue laser diode, had never been produced on a mass scale before."

The blue laser diode is a critical component of the high-capacity Blu-ray Disc drive that is at the center of the PS3. Sony is pushing the cutting-edge format, which can hold up to 50GB on a single-layered disc, to be the high-definition successor to the DVD format. Microsoft is backing a rival format, HD-DVD, and will offer an external HD-DVD drive this fall.

But for all of Blu-ray's promise, manufacturing players for the format has proven more than a little problematic. In February, Sony hinted blue laser diode production problems could delay the PS3 from its then-scheduled Spring 2007 launch. The new November launch date was confirmed at Sony's Electronic Entertainment Expo press conference in May, the same month Sony announced the US launch of the Blu-ray format had been pushed back. Meanwhile, in July, several Taiwanese business newspapers, including the Commercial Times, reported that Sony was falling behind in production of blue laser diodes, although Sony would not confirm those reports.

Analysts were swift in their response to the PS3 news. UBS's Michael Wallace predicted the delay could have an alarming ripple effect with third-party publishers. "We also think this delay could cause some of our companies to push some of their PS3 games out until March 2007 to take advantage of a larger installed base," he said in a statement. "We note that Activision (three launch titles), Electronic Arts (four to five launch titles), and Take-Two (three titles by January 2007) currently have the greatest exposure to the PS3 at launch, so they could be impacted the most by this delay."

Today's PS3 developments caused Wedbush Morgan Securities' Michael Pachter to lower his entire US annual software sales estimate--just issued yesterday--from three percent growth to two percent. He also tweaked his European annual game-sales estimate from one percent growth to a one percent loss. "Our prior forecast assumed that Sony would ship 2.3 million PS3s to the US and Europe in 2006," said Pachter. "Our revised forecast assumes shipments of 1.5 million to the US (unchanged) and zero to Europe (down from 800,000)."

Needless to say, the PS3's delay and any supply issues will be a boon to Sony's rivals, Nintendo and Microsoft. "There will undoubtedly be some 'substitution effect' from lower PS3 shipments, with a portion of the shortfall offset by higher sales of PlayStation 2, Xbox 360, and Wii hardware and software," Pachter said. "We have not adjusted our model to reflect this substitution...but we suspect that 25 to 50 percent of the shortfall in PS3 software sales (an estimated $124 million in Europe) will be offset by sales of software for the other platforms."

I personally don`t really see this potential shortage as being that bad. I know everyone wants to jump on it as they think it marks the end of Sony, but I highly doubt that. They`ll probably lose some of the market, but they`ll still be around. I`m always reluctant to buy 1st generation new technology, as I prefer to wait until the 2nd generation so some of the bugs are worked out. The PS3 is launching with 2 new and somewhat unproven technologies as I see it, the Cell processor and Blu-ray. Do you really want to be the the person lining up 10 hours in the cold to buy one so it can crash out on you 5 hours later? I don`t, but I know there is a quite a few people who will. I`ll wait for all them to buy it, 'beta test' it for a couple months, then pick one up in spring next year when some of the initial bugs have been worked out and the shelves are stocked. Secondly, I don`t see the big deal about the price. 600$ is decent price for any piece of high tech AV equipment. Blu-ray players alone at launching at close to 1000$ A decent receiver will cost you at least 600$ Some people seem to think it`s a game console, so it should be given away free for all to enjoy. That`s a nice idea, but this is the real world, not magical fantasy gumdrop land. Anyways, just my opinion. I`m not a Sony fanboy, I own a 360 and I`ll pick up Wii on launch day. I just don`t see the shortage and the price to be the nails in the coffin everyone claims them to be.

Heh, I so saw this coming. I knew the "world wide launch" would not happen and knew there would be a massive shortage. If they take the Bluray drive out they could probably drop the price and make it equal to the 360... but who cares anyway. The only game on the PS3 I want to play is MGS4 and 600 USD would never happen. For those that say the 360 + Wii is less than PS3 I have one thing to say to you... the Xbox 360 is more expensive than you think. I priced it out last night and for me to get one it would cost 810 USD for what I wanted, not 400 and that is not even including a TV. Read my blog for more info.

You know i'm old enough to remember being shocked as hell when square brought final fantasy to ps1 instead of nintendo like it was yesterday. I think all the big franchises from the ps2 era could end up onthe 360 if sony falls as hard as they may.. it's damn possible.

that doesn't make sense. 0.1 mil for japan 1.2 for north america, why the hell not ~0.8 mil for europe, we wud be more likely to buy the consoles than anywhere else. Sony suck ****.

whether sony will launch on time or not does not matter. it will still be worth waiting for. if it needs time to fine tune the console to assure nothing less than a quality product on launch date, then so be it. this is better than releasing a half-baked product, then will sell $200.00 external peripherals and re-designed controllers afterwards. another reason why the PS3 is worth the wait is because one knows that really great games will be released for the console and not some st*p*d volleyball game with half-naked girls.

sony will either die or move to a darker less open place. u know with the freaking expensive console and the ungodly expensive games (its blu-ray u think they would be cheap) the point of a console is a cheeper gaming alternative to a PC. although its still alot less expensive alternitive to PC it might be just a bit too exoensive to sell like hot cakes. and besides. Sony lies!!!!!! just a tad bit more then Microsoft but w/e i might be wrong. there are alot of money wasting people out there. but when you can buy a WII and a 360 for about the price of a PS3. you cant really say no. ill keep my 360 (not like i can afford the ps3 anyway)

I have no intentions of buying a PS3 but have to say I dont want them to go under competition is good for business and for consumers, though you have to ask yourself especially here is Australia do I wait untill March for the PS3, will it be March maybe it will be delayed again, you sony die hards are missing a lot of quality gaming to be had right now on the 360, so by all means buy your PS3 when it comes out in March or April, but dont miss the likes of GEARS OF WAR FORZA 2 CALL OF DUTY 3 FEAR and SPLINTER CELL all out before the holidays buy a 360 if your not satisfied sell it and but a PS3 when it launches.

Just think though guys....since they get the delay...most likely they get the non glitchy systems with the special stuff that comes with it that we always wonder why we miss out on.

I would like to point out a few quotes from the time of the 360 release. "hahaha, microsuck have just given the next console war to sony LOLZ" "zomg sony is going to win again" "I am going to wait for the PS3 release, at least then I will be able to get one the day it comes out." In europe, that will be 18 months after the european release of the 360, and there will have been a 360 price drop by then, and consoles in every store for £100 less than the PS3...

for Cap_n_Crunch: In Europe the situation is the following: Nobody gives a crap! See, Cap_n_Crunch, we europeans only crave for one game, and one game only: PES. Since PES will be only available in europe, and before ps3 comes even out in japan, we dont care. I say 360 will sell strong after that date, At least in europe. Also, i know cause i always buy all the systems, i know for a fact that the first version of ps3 will have a LOT of problems. Do i wanna shell 600 euros to have a system that doesnt work after 6 months? No, thanx, i' rahter wait for a better product and a price reduction.

I actually just have a question. For those in Europe and Australia: Do you even have any desire to wait for the launch anymore? I live in Canada and already have a 360 but if I were in your shoes and was in Europe without a console I would deff not be waiting for the PS3 in mid 2007. I was just curious to find out what the people in these parts of the world think, since most of the rants on this page are likely from Americans or Canadians who, while still being shorthanded, will still have a chance at getting a PS3 in November. So whats the deal Europe and Aussies? Hold out or cave and get something now?

wow that kinda sucks but it doesnt really matter because I never get the consles right when they come out. In fact I didnt get my ps2 until a year and a half after its release and then I traded it for the "slimline" or whatever they are called which was a little better because I didnt want to buy a network adapter just to play online. Also I didnt get the gamecube untill like a year after it was out and at first I only got it because of the resident evil games :) but i also bought other games for it like paper mario (one of my favs). now I wish they made more games for the cube!!! cuz its a cool little system. its "humble" anyway Liek I was saying I problly wont get a ps3 for another year or two! or at least till the price goes down because I will not settle for just the "core" system either go big or go home. untill then I will probly be asking for a wii or 360 this xmas wish me luck!!! p.s. I hope they come out with more, better looking fishing games for the new consols, i loved reel fishing 2 and saltwater sportfishing for the ps1!

I mean seriously, you guys either rip apart sony, as if you knew what was really going on within the company, and you guys bash the ps3. Its not going to be released for another 2 months, and you guys think you know exactly whats going to happen because of what happened to the 360 at launch? you guys are so retarded, go outside and stop playing ur video games. s****t..." And what are you then? A bussiness analist? And you know all the ins and outs about what is going on within the company? correct me if im wrong but isnt the 360's graphics processor more powerfull than the ps3's?ive also heard something about the 360 having a better "shading architecture"?not sure what that means, but ive heard those two things combined with the fact the 360 is easier to develop for means its unlikely that the ps3 will ever surpass the 360 as far as graphics/visuals.i know ive yet to see anything for the ps3 than can compete witht he best looking 360 games.from what ive read the only real advantage the ps3 has that could dramatically effect visuals is the storage capacity on the blu-ray disc, which most are skeptical will even get utilized much....if at all.the cell processor in the ps3 is said to be very powerfull but tapping the power practically for games is also something ive seen alot of skepticism on from devs, most seem to prefer the 360's setup. it just seems as if the quality of games is going to be decided by the devs more so than the hardware, and if they havent even scratched the surface of what the 360 can do....why do i need something "more powerfull",if that extra power wont be seen for a long time to come,if ever? anyway,i already got the _60 i guess this Nov. i might have to pick up the WII_ ...[for the kids of'course ;) ].

And just to let you know, theres not going to be such a thing as "Exclusive Content" cuz of the development costs of this consoles are so high, theyll need to get the money back by selling on all the consoles. And if there is 1 game that comes to the PS3 that isnt coming out to the X360, either that game sucks ass and its boring to hell, or it'll come out later on on all 3 platforms. Perfect example is GTA4, not an exclusive anymore Uh?? And FF series sucks , so I dont care bout it. Gran Turismo is good, but is just a remake of GT3, with a higher resolution, WOW thats great, Is SO great buying the same BS all over again, for what?? Bigger textures, JAJAJA, thats funny. And yes , the PS3 and X360 are so close in performance, there is NOT going to be any noticeable diference. Rusty_1

It's less like fans, and more like fanboys. The people that ruin things like Halo2 because they hyped up the game to the point where anything less than a 60 dollar orgasm was terrible. Looks like you need to think about this, Gozyaj.

so???, like people are surprised at this, it was supposed to be released on Q2 2006, now Q1 2007, wouldnt surprise me AT ALL if they DONT ship 6million by march 2007. Sony sucks, live with it. If you want to buy a product from a company that LIES all the time to get money out of you, thats fine by me cuz their not getting MY money. Leeches If you want a good platform, get a pc, and save yourself $600 for a graphics card that is DX10, and runs 2-3 times faster than PS3 and X360.

newager, do some research..... please, just so you dont sound like an idiot in public. no offence to you personally, but im really tired of people making claims especially with respect to hardware capabilities of the sytems, without any sort of accuracy whatsoever. i just came form a popular reseller website that sells everything under the electronic sun, and i looked at the user reviews for the 360. not surprisingly enough, 86% (yep, i did the math) of the bad reviews focused on the 'BIG M' and hating microsoft and bill gates.. seriously...... come on. anyway, stop acting like kids picking ppl for a team and do the ********* research. buy what u want to buy, and like what u want to like, but lets keep the intelligence level of the message boards over the adolescent age group.. RESEARCH and FACTS denote intelligence and understanding.... sorry about the personal hit newager, i had no right.. andsorry for the language ppl...

I am Playstation fan, I will definetely wait until PS3 is out and stable. The reason why I buy PS3 is more because some games are exclussive to PS3 only I Was also considering to buy 360 however, 360 is owned by microsoft and microsoft means PC some of their games, well, mostly will appear on the PC I got a Pc why not play there? Let the PS3 handles the exclussives. And anyway 360's graphic compared to PS3 graphic is far behind. True that graphic doesn't mean a good thing rather it is the gameplay that plays a great role. But personally as a person who love to witness the aesthetics of art (like in paintings, etc) graphic helps me very much to confey the message, theme and soul of the game itself. This is what I am considering very much

Sony has been in very much financial trouble for some time because of the music cd spyware issue last year, and simply profit losses on too many overpriced electronic machines. The PSP was failure and the PS2 was the only aspect of their company besides the last two spiderman movies. Peter Parker's spidey sense won't save the company from collapse. PS3 will not sell in Europe. And very likely the system will not be launched on time for us or Japan. And if it is, it will break down immediately and everyone who was stupid enough to buy one will regret it. Nintendo on the other hand has done everything attention. They got attention whored by the weird name change. They made a whole new gameplay design that was really innovative. They have a hardware in the machine that will parallel to the other systems (minus the HD compatability; but any normal tv which 95% of the world owns, it will be about the same). Very unique and innovative games with an amazing amount of potentially excellent launch titles. I mean Microsoft could not get Halo 3 for launch and PS3 can't even get Solid Snake nor FF for launch. And I bet you my bottom dollar that Nintendo is just going do something nuts on the 14th of this month with th eWii that will just blow both Sony and Microsoft off their feet. Free wi-fi out of the box with a good safe internet browser. I think we have found this year's best christmas gift ever. So get the palmbearers out cuz Sony has ridden from the Hurse to the grave.

It's all hype, get up the demand with little supply, so everyone freaks out and really wants one... It's an OLD a** trick...it's all $$$, nothing else.... Doesn't anyone get it? This is coming straight from one of the BIGGEST corporate GIANTS on the PLANET.... THEY KNOW EXACTLY WHAT THEY'RE DOING....! Let's stick with someone who's at least trying to be innovative... Praise the Wii !!!!
