Confirmed: 400,000 PS3s for US launch

[UPDATE 5] US Sony reps confirm scaled-down November 17 debut; Japan to get only 100,000 on November 11. Worldwide 2006 ship target now 2-2.4 million units--1-1.2 million of which will be for North America.

This morning in Tokyo, Sony Computer Entertainment president Ken Kutaragi announced that only 500,000 PlayStation 3s would be available in the US and Japan at launch, and that the console's European debut had been pushed back until 2007.

Of the 500,000 launch PS3s, 100,000 will go on sale in Japan on November 11, and 400,000 will hit store shelves in North America on November 17. "We decided to focus on the Japanese and US markets," Kutaragi told reporters at a Tokyo press conference before apologizing for the delay, according to the Associated Press. Reuters echoed the numbers and said that Kutaragi had lowered the worldwide 2006 PS3 shipment target from 4 million to 2 million.

When initially contacted by GameSpot about today's PS3 news, Sony reps said only that the company had "not announced specific ship numbers for Japan or North America." They also said that, despite the European delay and the reports of reduced shipment numbers, the previous estimates still stood. "[We] have announced that 2 million will be available in the world come November 11 and 17, and 4 million by the end of the calendar year," said a spokesperson.

However, later in the day, Dave Karraker, SCEA's newly appointed head of corporate communications, told GameSpot that the wire-service figures were correct. "400,000 is just the day-of-launch figure," said the executive. "1 to 1.2 million units [will be] available in North America by December 31." This afternoon, Karraker confirmed the reduced international numbers to The Rocky Mountain News. "Worldwide, there will be between 2 to 2.4 million units available in North America and Japan by the end of the year," he said.

Karraker also claimed that, while reduced, the US PS3 launch numbers bested those of another next-generation console. "By the end of the year, we will have...more than double what Microsoft sold through of Xbox 360 [in 2005]." He reiterated this sentiment to MTV News. "The supply we have at launch is comparable to what was available for the PlayStation 2, not Xbox 360," said Karraker. "The total allocation for units in North America...is just less than what we had for PS2 and more than Microsoft had for Xbox 360."

Both the PS2's October 2000 launch and the 360's November 2005 debut were plagued by widespread sellouts, long lines, and occasional scuffles at US retailers. Sony estimates it had around 500,000 PS2s available day of launch. By contrast, NPD reported that Microsoft sold around 326,000 units by the end of November 2005. However, the hard-to-find next-gen console moved just another 281,000 units during December, bringing the 2005 total to around 607,000 units--half the number of PS3s Sony believes it will sell this year in North America.

Speaking to MTV News, Karraker urged calm among prospective PS3 purchasers. "People shouldn't fixate on the day-one allocation number," Karraker he said. "They should instead be more interested in the overall units available through the holidays, which will be 1 million to 1.2 million, which are significant amounts that will provide retail supply week over week with no dips in available stock." This was likely a veiled reference to the fact that many 360 retailers did not have the console in stock for weeks--or months--after it went on sale.

Though the flurry of various launch figures was initially confusing, one thing has always been perfectly clear. Sony is officially sticking to its original PS3 sales estimates for its current fiscal year, which ends on March 31, 2007. "The previously announced PlayStation 3 shipment forecast of 6 million units globally within the fiscal year ending 2007 is not changed," the company said in a statement issued early this morning.

Karraker also offered an explanation for the PS3's European delay and US-Japanese supply problems. "The PlayStation 3 is a revolutionary, as well as evolutionary, product. If we were simply putting out PlayStation 2.1, it would be much easier to hit a worldwide launch," he said. "As it was, Ken Kutaragi set very ambitious goals for the PS3, based on what he felt we could achieve. The simple fact is that many of the components for the PS3, particularly the blue laser diode, had never been produced on a mass scale before."

The blue laser diode is a critical component of the high-capacity Blu-ray Disc drive that is at the center of the PS3. Sony is pushing the cutting-edge format, which can hold up to 50GB on a single-layered disc, to be the high-definition successor to the DVD format. Microsoft is backing a rival format, HD-DVD, and will offer an external HD-DVD drive this fall.

But for all of Blu-ray's promise, manufacturing players for the format has proven more than a little problematic. In February, Sony hinted blue laser diode production problems could delay the PS3 from its then-scheduled Spring 2007 launch. The new November launch date was confirmed at Sony's Electronic Entertainment Expo press conference in May, the same month Sony announced the US launch of the Blu-ray format had been pushed back. Meanwhile, in July, several Taiwanese business newspapers, including the Commercial Times, reported that Sony was falling behind in production of blue laser diodes, although Sony would not confirm those reports.

Analysts were swift in their response to the PS3 news. UBS's Michael Wallace predicted the delay could have an alarming ripple effect with third-party publishers. "We also think this delay could cause some of our companies to push some of their PS3 games out until March 2007 to take advantage of a larger installed base," he said in a statement. "We note that Activision (three launch titles), Electronic Arts (four to five launch titles), and Take-Two (three titles by January 2007) currently have the greatest exposure to the PS3 at launch, so they could be impacted the most by this delay."

Today's PS3 developments caused Wedbush Morgan Securities' Michael Pachter to lower his entire US annual software sales estimate--just issued yesterday--from three percent growth to two percent. He also tweaked his European annual game-sales estimate from one percent growth to a one percent loss. "Our prior forecast assumed that Sony would ship 2.3 million PS3s to the US and Europe in 2006," said Pachter. "Our revised forecast assumes shipments of 1.5 million to the US (unchanged) and zero to Europe (down from 800,000)."

Needless to say, the PS3's delay and any supply issues will be a boon to Sony's rivals, Nintendo and Microsoft. "There will undoubtedly be some 'substitution effect' from lower PS3 shipments, with a portion of the shortfall offset by higher sales of PlayStation 2, Xbox 360, and Wii hardware and software," Pachter said. "We have not adjusted our model to reflect this substitution...but we suspect that 25 to 50 percent of the shortfall in PS3 software sales (an estimated $124 million in Europe) will be offset by sales of software for the other platforms."

the only reason the ps2 is still going strong is because its fanboys and the casual gamers who own it still havent figured out it was made obsolete by the xbox several years ago.sony has been relying on its name[built with the original ps,a favorite of mine] since the ps2[utter disapointment] launched.people are finally starting to catch on to sony's crap, and realize that there are better choices out there, something the real hardcore figured out long ago.

"That's what I've been saying. It seems no one else is thinking about that. What happens when all of the early adopters that wanted the Premium get the Basic? I guess there won't be a big deal over HDMI cables anymore. " Add in the fact that without HDMI ports, the BluRay drive is basically useless for movies (Without HDMI and HDCP chips in your TV, BluRay will automatically downsample the video to that of DVD quality)... So you guys are waiting on Sony to finally hammer out the problems with the unneeded BluRay drives, that are increasing cost and delaying the PS3, increasing game cost, etc. And you wont even be able to use the best part of it, ever, since it doesnt come equipped with an HDMI port on the lesser model. Again makes one wonder why you would pay more for a console with BluRay that you cant even use (Cept for games, and even then its rather useless as everyone has been over the debate that more space doesnt make better games, they havent even hit the limits yet with DVDs and wont for quite some time).

Gamefan1980, you know nothing so I suggest you crawl back from the hole you crawled out off. ...xbox this... xbox that...blah...blah..blah all talk. How dare you call the PS3 an unproven technology and this and that!!!! And then you go on saying fanboy garbage (that you can obviously not backup) "Only reason PS2 is still improving is because it sucked so bad to begin with" sucked bad you say…..the only reason the PS2 is still improving is because it packs so much potential more than the xbox and developers are also using new and improved software/techniques and wat not to make new games, but anyways what would you know you probably don’t even own one. Oh also try to find a good RPG title on the xbox that does not share names with a PC game, yeah that’s what I thought….none (nothing but lame football games). I think the reason you come here and post your lame posts is because you own a X360 and you know oh yeah you know..the PS3 is going to be all over that but you already made mommy spend the money on it and thats why it burns you inside more n more every day as PS3 approaches. Just a heads up, talking about the Playstation 2/3 (the pimp daddy of all consoles) like that aint going to get you any friends around here…

I will admit I am a 360 owner, but I'm not a Microsoft fanboy. I'm a realist. And the realization needs to sink in with you Sony fanboys, like williamwu1985. First off you're like 21 and were twelve during one of the most heated console wars similiar to what we face today, and just like then the system with the most value will win again. Put things into perspective for you people. The 360 isnt the most impressive revolution in gaming, but it will provide the most value in gaming over any other console. What makes a system win a console war is hardware, mostly games. What you're missing in the bigger picture is developers for the 360 have more time working with a newer technology then developers have had with the ps3, hence no difference in the looks of a 360 game and a ps3 game. Most games don't run to the fullest potential of a system's capabilities until almost a year after its release, and the 360 has almost a year under its belt. Games will only get better for the 360, better then the ps3. I own a dvd player that plays dvds through hdmi, and I have an lcd big screen that can run in 1080p, the best resolution possible and I can't tell the difference between the dvds when I play them through hdmi or component cables. So it doesnt matter if you have a 360 with component or a ps3 through hdmi, you wont notice a difference. Unless developers use all 50 gigs of the dvd, which they wont. Oblivion only used 6 gigs of the 9 aval., so to say bluray games will be better isn't a proven fact. It all has to do with the developer and the time they put it in, and with developers making games for 6 different systems they are not putting the time in to utilize the next gen consoles. Ps3 may have a slightly faster processor and graphics card and processor but with the technology being so new will developers be able to utilize the upgrade. Probably not. THen when you throw in xbox live, the addition of the camera, xbox live anywhere, and shortly the xna available for download online, what advantage does sony have, none. Games will decide who will win, and gameplay. Right now gameplay advantages go to the Wii with the remote, and the 360 with xbox live and vision intergration. Money is also another big factor which everyone feels isn't. Unfortunately the truth of the matter is the largest portion of gamers are kids who rely on their parents for money to buy these gaming systems. Kids are stupid, but parents aren't. If mom and dad are at the store and see a ps3 for 600 bucks, but then see a 360 for 400 and a wii for 200, which option do they think they will take in time where our economy isnt the best its seen. Clearly SOny will sell systems, but they won't sell more then the 360 or Wii. There is no reason to buy a ps3, its an overpriced mini cpu with bluray technology. Value is where its at, you will get more for your money with a 360 or a Wii, and that will decide who wins this console war. Lets not forget that Microsoft will be bundling more with their premium edition with the release of the ps3 providing more value. Bill Gates didnt become the richest man in the world because he was stupid, he knows what he's doing, and you'll all be suprised when he makes it impossible to refuse buying a 360 this holiday season.

PS3 will be the best next-gen system out there. all of you who say otherwise are complaining about the price, or that "microsoft rulez". PS3 is offering amazing technology never seen in a console before. its also offering brand new games that kick a$$, not crappy remakes of old games. gamefan1980, your a complete moron, the ps3 is not going to sell out, did you even read this news post? they will keep shipping ps3s so that retailers wont run out of stock. Ps3 wont face the same thing xbox360 did at launch. the X360 got sold out, and stayed sold out for months at a time. that wont happen with the ps3, sony took care of that. Ps3 will blow xbox360 away, no doubt about it. Allthough i do think wii will sell like mad cus it looks like it will be extremely cheap. Also, for all of you who think so, i am not a "microsoft hater". i dont hate microsoft, i own an xbox. I can just tell that ps3 will be the very best of the next-gen consoles, i just hope that the release date wont get pushed back.

gamefan, I think you underestimate the power of hype. After TGS and once Sony starts their first big marketing campaign for PS3, everyone will be talking about it although there is a very viable competitor in 360 already out. It's just the nature of marketing and the "next big thing". It doesn't matter there is all this negative Sony/PS3 press swirling around the GAMING community right now. "All press is good press"

Nothing to complain about sony if you are not a europian. 2.4 million by end of year for japan and US, is not much different from orginal mensioned 4 million for 3 place. For US, we have 2.4/2= 1.2, instead of 4/3= 1.333, and it still almost doubled the number when 360 laungh. If you still complain about it, you are just a microsoft monopoly helper that support xbox 360 without a reason.

Your forgetting that even the simplest of gamers have no idea about any of this going on and will still run out there and grab a PS3 for themselves or a Kid. PS2 48 Million dollars 48 hours. MS needs to find a way to sway consumers to purchase the 360 (or wii) instead of holding out for the ps3. Sega faced a similar situation with the launch of the dreamcast. It is (still) a great system but due to the "holding out" for the ps2, the dc didnt sell well. There is something about the "what if" factor when it comes to sony systems. The ps2 sold well because it was new and had dvd and was a sony system with backward comp. The ps3 will still sell just as good no matter how much bad press it gets. Because it is new and has blue ray and backward comp and is a sony system. No matter how good or bad the other systems are around it, sony has this hold on the consumers who feel it is only best to buy by the name value of something. A chevy owner will tend to be more loyal to chevy no matter if ford or dodge came out with a better car with more features. That is just the way people think when it comes to brand loyalty. We are all guilty of it in some way or another. For myself I am a toshiba guy. I have my tv's and dvd players and vcr's all toshiba. It isn't anything special it is just I liked the brand and have had no problems with it. MS and nintendo have their hands full trying to convert the loyal. The only real way for either to truly win this war is if sony decided to give up making consoles due to too many production issues.

ps3 is gonna blow. too much money, not enough shipped out. xbox 360 is the best move i had ever made. old classic's i can play (street fighter etc.) music videos, trailers for games and movies for FREE, same with DEMOS ( very important) and best of all, xbox live. I went from a ps2 socom freak to a 360 gamer. its the best decision ever. Trust me. Go buy Wii, or 360. PS3 had its chance...... and blew it.

Delay for PS3 in Europe? NO WAY! Its not even going to be a worldwide release like Sony promised it would but hey they promised it would be out last winter that didn't happen, promised it would be out Spring of this year and yeah that didn't happen either. They promised it would be like what 3 times more powerful then the 360 and we have still yet to see that, they look exactly the same and the price is at least $200 between the 2 systems and thats the 360s expensive version. Come on now $600 for a videogame system? That ridiculous not to mention the games are probably gonna be more then $60 probably more around $80. So the total price will be what around $800-$900 just to get a game and the weaker version of the system (assuming stores have the lower cost version), honestly who would be willing to pay that, especially when you can get a 360 that gives you so much more IMHO. So please Sony heads go buy this thing you call a system (more like a PC if anything) waste hundreds of dollars for something that IMO could be very buggy just like Sony's last two systems they released were (PS2 & PSP). I'll bet you'll fill real good about once you fork out all that money and the Blu-Ray drive breaks then you have to wait for it to get fixed cause you had to return it directly to Sony cause there won't be any sytems left in stock to replace it. Oh by the way you might want to pick up that exteded warranty that will cost you an extra $100 caused its almost guaranteed to have bugs in it. I'll sit back laughing playing my 360 & Wii, laughing at all the people that thought Sony could make the PS3 a godly system like they claim it is.

I wonder how many of the poor saps who get "lucky" enough to purchase a PS3 this Xmas will get stuck with the non-upgradeable, cheapo version. On the bright side, the folks stuck with the cheapo PS3 won't have to worry about Sony not including HDMI cables...

The different between the XBox360 shortages and the PS3 shortages is there wasn't any other NEXT-GEN console on retail shelves to buy when there were no more XBox360's. Not when Sony sells all 400,000 PS3 on Nov 17th, gamers buy when they can't find a PS3 on Nov 18th? Or on Nov 24th for that matter? Yup.. they will buy a Wii or XBox360. The PS3's will be all gone when the biggest shopping day of the years comes. The other difference is that M$ had 300,000 XBox360 in U.K. and 200,000 in Japan on the launch day. Sony is only going to have 100,000 in Japan and ZERO in the U.K. That's a huge difference. People said M$ was stupid to launch the XBox360 so early. Actually that was the smartest move they could have done. Where as Sony plans on selling 2-2.5 million PS3 by the end of the year. M$ could easily sell 3-5 million between now and the end of the year. Even Nintendo's Wii has a gret chance to sell 3-4 million. I know a lot of people who plan on getting a Wii. I can't wait for Nov.

my city has several million people! Most of which are going to want a ps3. your best bet is to pre-order it as soon as the stores accept pre-orders because THERE WILL BE ABOUT 8 PLAYSTATION 3'S IN EACH STORE ON LAUNCH DATE, which of course, means chaos for gamers all around the country.

If we look back at the last generation with the PS2 and its competition, the huge installed base did not kick in for any of those systems until they hit the magic price of $199.99 and hit critical mass. That I believe is still the price point to hit to sell a system after the hard core and fan boys get theirs. If this is the case Nintendo once again may start out at this price offering and the 360 could be there by next Christmas, but I can't see the PS3 with all of its bells and whistles ever hitting that sweet spot for price. That is why Sony is screwed LONG TERM!

i don't think the delay bodes well for sony and the ps3. i was particularly turned off by the launch title players, due to lack of ps3 dev units being sent out to game developers. besides always being lackluster (regardless of the console system), launch titles have never had a lasting effect on gamers. 6-12 months later they're collecting dust or in the bargain bin at the local store. the games never win any awards, etc. sony sucks for picking blu-ray. what a shame, b/c i've always been a huge sony electronics fan (tvs clock radios, dvd players, receivers, ps2, psp ...)

Guys Calm the F**** down. I'm buying the PS3 because it is the best long term investment for my money. 360 will cap just like the original x-box did in jsut a few years. but the potential for the PS3 is much higher considering that developers are still making better graphics for the PS2. and Osinocavalli i am now crossing off UNI because obvously your english teacher was a retarded slug.

Even if I had the money to buy a PS3 (which I don't) I sure as hell wouldn't want that first run. Not for $600. All these issues with the Blu-Ray laser would make me nervous. As for the poster who asked about the launch numbers with the two different skus, that is what I was thinking about. Who will get what? And will a hardcore gamer settle for the crippled PS3 if he knows that there is no way to make the machine as good as the $600 PS3? At least with the 360 you had the ablity to do at least that. There is too much confusion, too close to launch. They need to make some kind of atomic sized splash at TGS. They better have Bin Laden up there onstage playing, something, anything to change the direction of the downward spiral they are in. Has anyone heard from the big publsihers yet? Just how pissed are EA right now? They sank a pretty penny into the Madden PS3 development I am sure.

ok, iv officially had enough of this, i have been sticking up for sony this entire time, but this is just too much. I was dissapointed with the lack of ruble feature and the other features that were stripped away from the e3 2005. The price didnt really bother me to much cause im from canada so im used to getting screwed by the console companies. But they are having problems and that is annoying and they said that their will be 6 million units by the end of the year, now its down to 400 000, Sony keep up the dissapointments like this even before its released and this will probably end up being your last console

Sony needs to announce the official launch games before I will even think about getting the PS3 this year. If Heavenly Sword isn't one of them, then I'll be waiting.

Legion OSH- Finally, someone who has some common sense. Yes, $600 IS a lot of money. Do you think every Joe Gamer has $600 to spend on a video game console these days? We're talking about the same crowd that shops at walmart. And THEY drive the game market, not the hardcore gamer that gushes over news storys on a game forum. The fact of the matter is, Sony will likely stay in the videogame business, no doubt about it. But they seriously dropped the ball this generation and have given up their dominant position in the industry. If a $600 game system sells as much as the PS1 and PS2 did, then good for Sony on predicting that the market has put games on the top of their budget priorites and finds value in a half grand entertainment box. Because the hard truth is, there hasnt been a single successful system that has launched at a price over $400 (Saturn, 3DO, Neo Geo, PSX, and even the 360 as of today). Fanboys should get over their bias and think long and hard about what they want this generation.

I have to say LegionOsh is a very smart person. I make a great living, but I wouldn't pay 600 dollars for a gaming system. That's just stupid. You could buy a 25 inch LCD at Walmart for 600 dollars. Which brings up another point. To fully enjoy the PS3 you need an HD TV. You add that cost plus the system with games and accessories your looking at almost 2 grand to play video games. Thats most peoples living cost for a month. Over 60 percent of Americans make less then 45000 a year, which means they wont have that kind of money to throw around. Sony is acting with a big head thinking brand loyality is going to crush their competition and its not going to happen. Because if you look at the 360 the biggest reason for its shortage wasn't Xbox owners buying it, it was ps2 owners as well. There is not brand loyality in the gaming industry where most of the gaming public is just a casual gamer. IF you do something casually you dont spend almost a thousand dollars to enjoy it. The gamecube blew in the previous generation because for an extra 100 bucks you got a far better system for the money. This will happen again. Why spend 600 dollars for a PS3 when technically its not that much better? Use that extra 200 dollars you'd save buying a 360 on games and accessories and you're better off then you would buying a PS3. Sony will sell alot of systems to idiots but it won't win the next gen race. Bill Gates has said he has enough money that if the 360 failed he'd make another system until he crushed Sony. Microsoft can afford losing money dropping the price of the 360 to help crush sony. Also remember GTA is no longer exclusive but the next biggest franchise is, thats HALO, and HALO 3, GEARS OF WAR, on the 360 only and GTA4 hitting the 360 the same day as PS3 gives no real reason to buy a ps3 other then fan loyality. Sorry to say this to you childish fan boys but Sony is not in any position to win the race this time.

"cowmaster2k3 I wonder what the Premium/Core ratio will be" That's what I've been saying. It seems no one else is thinking about that. What happens when all of the early adopters that wanted the Premium get the Basic? I guess there won't be a big deal over HDMI cables anymore.

Only 400K for the US.. hmmm well looks like it'll be the 360 launch all over again. Sorry to say this Sony but you have just alienated a LOT of people. Not only with your high entry price tag but your backpeddling saying that prerendered graphics were really in game but weren't and now this. OH well looks like I'll be having fun with my 360 and Wii!

Sony has to say something to save face. In the end they will be counting on the ps2 (again) to be the seller until they can fully devote themselves to the ps3. I think they wil be their own competition. Nintendo felt it back in the nes/snes days. You promote a generation for so long you dont want to turn your back on and yet you watch as the competition sneaks past and gains the lead (sega genesis) only to play catch up. Sony wants to keep supporting the ps2 so what would really make a consumer want to get a ps3? Blue ray is their saving grace but right now there isn't that much difference between that, hd dvd and even an hdmi equipped dvd player. The games are the same as the 360. The only exclusive companies are starting to have second thoughts. To the point of toying with making 360 and wii versions of games just to see if they could. I can remember back in the nintendo exclusive days where game companies couldnt make games for other systems. And yet there were a few who did make some for the genesis just to see if they could. It ended up that they released them anyway despite nintendo preassure. I think Konami and Square have versions of mgs4 and ff13 they made for the 360 or wii but are keeping them under wraps.
