Confirmed: 400,000 PS3s for US launch

[UPDATE 5] US Sony reps confirm scaled-down November 17 debut; Japan to get only 100,000 on November 11. Worldwide 2006 ship target now 2-2.4 million units--1-1.2 million of which will be for North America.

This morning in Tokyo, Sony Computer Entertainment president Ken Kutaragi announced that only 500,000 PlayStation 3s would be available in the US and Japan at launch, and that the console's European debut had been pushed back until 2007.

Of the 500,000 launch PS3s, 100,000 will go on sale in Japan on November 11, and 400,000 will hit store shelves in North America on November 17. "We decided to focus on the Japanese and US markets," Kutaragi told reporters at a Tokyo press conference before apologizing for the delay, according to the Associated Press. Reuters echoed the numbers and said that Kutaragi had lowered the worldwide 2006 PS3 shipment target from 4 million to 2 million.

When initially contacted by GameSpot about today's PS3 news, Sony reps said only that the company had "not announced specific ship numbers for Japan or North America." They also said that, despite the European delay and the reports of reduced shipment numbers, the previous estimates still stood. "[We] have announced that 2 million will be available in the world come November 11 and 17, and 4 million by the end of the calendar year," said a spokesperson.

However, later in the day, Dave Karraker, SCEA's newly appointed head of corporate communications, told GameSpot that the wire-service figures were correct. "400,000 is just the day-of-launch figure," said the executive. "1 to 1.2 million units [will be] available in North America by December 31." This afternoon, Karraker confirmed the reduced international numbers to The Rocky Mountain News. "Worldwide, there will be between 2 to 2.4 million units available in North America and Japan by the end of the year," he said.

Karraker also claimed that, while reduced, the US PS3 launch numbers bested those of another next-generation console. "By the end of the year, we will have...more than double what Microsoft sold through of Xbox 360 [in 2005]." He reiterated this sentiment to MTV News. "The supply we have at launch is comparable to what was available for the PlayStation 2, not Xbox 360," said Karraker. "The total allocation for units in North America...is just less than what we had for PS2 and more than Microsoft had for Xbox 360."

Both the PS2's October 2000 launch and the 360's November 2005 debut were plagued by widespread sellouts, long lines, and occasional scuffles at US retailers. Sony estimates it had around 500,000 PS2s available day of launch. By contrast, NPD reported that Microsoft sold around 326,000 units by the end of November 2005. However, the hard-to-find next-gen console moved just another 281,000 units during December, bringing the 2005 total to around 607,000 units--half the number of PS3s Sony believes it will sell this year in North America.

Speaking to MTV News, Karraker urged calm among prospective PS3 purchasers. "People shouldn't fixate on the day-one allocation number," Karraker he said. "They should instead be more interested in the overall units available through the holidays, which will be 1 million to 1.2 million, which are significant amounts that will provide retail supply week over week with no dips in available stock." This was likely a veiled reference to the fact that many 360 retailers did not have the console in stock for weeks--or months--after it went on sale.

Though the flurry of various launch figures was initially confusing, one thing has always been perfectly clear. Sony is officially sticking to its original PS3 sales estimates for its current fiscal year, which ends on March 31, 2007. "The previously announced PlayStation 3 shipment forecast of 6 million units globally within the fiscal year ending 2007 is not changed," the company said in a statement issued early this morning.

Karraker also offered an explanation for the PS3's European delay and US-Japanese supply problems. "The PlayStation 3 is a revolutionary, as well as evolutionary, product. If we were simply putting out PlayStation 2.1, it would be much easier to hit a worldwide launch," he said. "As it was, Ken Kutaragi set very ambitious goals for the PS3, based on what he felt we could achieve. The simple fact is that many of the components for the PS3, particularly the blue laser diode, had never been produced on a mass scale before."

The blue laser diode is a critical component of the high-capacity Blu-ray Disc drive that is at the center of the PS3. Sony is pushing the cutting-edge format, which can hold up to 50GB on a single-layered disc, to be the high-definition successor to the DVD format. Microsoft is backing a rival format, HD-DVD, and will offer an external HD-DVD drive this fall.

But for all of Blu-ray's promise, manufacturing players for the format has proven more than a little problematic. In February, Sony hinted blue laser diode production problems could delay the PS3 from its then-scheduled Spring 2007 launch. The new November launch date was confirmed at Sony's Electronic Entertainment Expo press conference in May, the same month Sony announced the US launch of the Blu-ray format had been pushed back. Meanwhile, in July, several Taiwanese business newspapers, including the Commercial Times, reported that Sony was falling behind in production of blue laser diodes, although Sony would not confirm those reports.

Analysts were swift in their response to the PS3 news. UBS's Michael Wallace predicted the delay could have an alarming ripple effect with third-party publishers. "We also think this delay could cause some of our companies to push some of their PS3 games out until March 2007 to take advantage of a larger installed base," he said in a statement. "We note that Activision (three launch titles), Electronic Arts (four to five launch titles), and Take-Two (three titles by January 2007) currently have the greatest exposure to the PS3 at launch, so they could be impacted the most by this delay."

Today's PS3 developments caused Wedbush Morgan Securities' Michael Pachter to lower his entire US annual software sales estimate--just issued yesterday--from three percent growth to two percent. He also tweaked his European annual game-sales estimate from one percent growth to a one percent loss. "Our prior forecast assumed that Sony would ship 2.3 million PS3s to the US and Europe in 2006," said Pachter. "Our revised forecast assumes shipments of 1.5 million to the US (unchanged) and zero to Europe (down from 800,000)."

Needless to say, the PS3's delay and any supply issues will be a boon to Sony's rivals, Nintendo and Microsoft. "There will undoubtedly be some 'substitution effect' from lower PS3 shipments, with a portion of the shortfall offset by higher sales of PlayStation 2, Xbox 360, and Wii hardware and software," Pachter said. "We have not adjusted our model to reflect this substitution...but we suspect that 25 to 50 percent of the shortfall in PS3 software sales (an estimated $124 million in Europe) will be offset by sales of software for the other platforms."

Well, I've cooled down a little, and while I do think it's very sad, it will just have to do. Shame since many of the launch games are actually very appealing to me this time around. Should have seen it coming, but at least I got more time to save up for plenty of games when it comes around here. But they better keep March, or else they're gonna get it.

I wonder, if one runs out of places to shoot oneself in the foot, if one would actually shoot themself in the head instead? p.s. I do not wish for anyone to intentionally harm themselves or others...unless it's on screen or on the field and the occasion calls.

TO: AcidTWister I never said it DIDNT happen with the 360. But just do the math... Premium Xbox bundle retail - $399 Ebay - $1,700 (probably a bundle or something by the way) So thats a markup of about $1,300 or 425% markup. PS3 premium bundle retail - $599....assuming the same markup of 425% that would mean ps3s are going for $2,600. Feel sorry for the fanboys who are gonna give me $2,600 of their "hard earned" money they have been saving.

The problems caused by the diodes in the BluRay drive do not explain the delay in Europe since they still plan to ship the same numbers World Wide by the end of the year. They are not telling us everything and trying to save face. This launch could be pretty bad in Europe. In the US there were only 500,000 PS2s when it launched so lets see if the price will keep this thing from selling out, probably not. But selling out is not hard to do when you have a small number.

EVERYBODY LISTEN!!! Shut up...just shut up. Honestly, why does it always boil down to favoritism? Don't you people remember when you wer 4-5 years old, and you didn't care if you were playing a NES, SNES, Genesis, whatever. If it was a video game, you were happy. What's happened? Who cares about the consoles, isn't it the games that make a console worth owning? I sure as hell din't buy a PS2 5 years ago so I could d*ick around in the system menu, I bought it for the games, same with the original Xbox. I have a 360, which I bought for a GAME, Dead Rising. So where's all this fanboy crap coming from. I'm a video game fanboy if anything. I'm getting a PS3, not right away, obviously, but eventually, for the games. Shortages happen. It's happened with practiaclly every console launch for the past 15 years, why is everybody making a big deal now? That's why retailers allow you to RESERVE these things so you can be among the first to own them. And seriously, for all you Xbox 360 "fanboys", why are you even wasting your time posting on these boards? Go play your Xbox 360. You shouldn't even be worrying about the PS3, the only reason I can imagine you being on here is that you feel threatened by the PS3, like it's going to wipe out the 360 or something. and btw, THE SAME GOES FOR SONY "FANBOYS"! I'm eventually going to own an Xbox 360, a Playstation 3, and a Wii, just think....that's three times the great games I'll be able to play.

I agree with Riadon too...but Sony deserves bashing with all the haughty double talk. I own a PS2 and a Sony tv, but man...Sony Entertainment needs a swift kick in the nuts and a good talking to about not trying to act like this big ominous bully who can take over the world just because their name is Sony. They talk the big talk, and now they can't back it up...and I say GOOD! They deserve it!

i can't help but laugh and cry at the same time. i realy wanted to get the ps3 at launch. i even reserved one over a year ago, but with this news i think my chances of getting one is slim to none. i have the 360 and i love it but i was looking forward to getting the ps3. now i think i'll wait maybe well into 2007 or 2008 untill things get a little less crazy, and maybe a little price drop. this maybe the worst new sony can have at this time i addition to the high price.

Shortages...is anybody really surprised on this? It's one of the oldest marketing tactics in the book. Heh...this has been one amusing day for Sony today. It's a shame cause PS2 is still such a strong system w/great games. I said it before and I'll say it again...Sony is not ready, they rushed this new technology and they have now gently & firmly placed their foot in their mouth. God help everybody on Launch day... I know PS3 is gonna be a hot system...but, now isn't the time. Wii 9/14/06 I'm ready for Wii!!!! >)

If anyone's actually interested in the source article, here it is: "The production problem is causing about a one-month delay that will reduce the company's supply capacity by about a million machines from the original plan, he said." << LINK REMOVED >> They claim that they'll ship 2 million by the end of the calender year. So that's 1.5 million to go in December... kind of farfetched.

@ jchap127 yeah right like they'll go to the 360, if they do that 360 gets too powerful... and with too powerful i mean that there wouldn't be any competition anymore.. xcept for wii... but suppose the wii wouldn't exist, so that means that no competition, is microsoft gets bored and says: yo we gunna leave the console market, bye! and then another video game crash has started... meaning nintendo comes back and restarts the whole cycle again... seems like history does repeats itself...

Thisissami: No, blu-ray movies aren't region free, however, they're not nearly as controlled as today's DVD's. Do a quick google search on the words "Blu-ray region coding" and you'll see that there are only 3 regions this time, with the US, Japan, Latin America and the rest of East Asia (excluding China) all in one region. The other two regions consist of (2) Europe and Africa, and (3) China Russia, and any other country not in the first two regions. IaO-Matrix: Not like it's the first time something like that would happen. 360's were going for $1,750. << LINK REMOVED >> And worse, a 360 even sold for $10,600. << LINK REMOVED >> Guess "Sony fanboys" aren't the only ones willing to shell out the cash. As for the actual story; Heh, nice one AP. Good to see you jumped the shark on that one. How's the saying go? Assuming only makes...

I will have all 3 and be one of the most sane people in here. I think too many people are one-sided on the issue. If you are not getting a PS3 or dont care about then you have nothing to whine about! The PS2 didnt have its huge installed base until it was 199. What do you think is going to happen here? The PS3 will drop in price. People talk about exclusives. PS3 had more exclusives than anyone. Where else are going to play Final Fantasy 13, Metal Gear Solid 4, Naughty Dog games, Virtua Fighter 4, Tekken 6, and over 10 more I know exclusives. The people not getting it are people that cant afford it. I know there is a lot of people. I can barely. It makes me beg the question, should I get lots of more 360 games or only a couple and the PS3. Bottomline to me is its the only place I can play some of my favorite games. I have no choice so I will get it. It will succeed. Maybe not great but it will be a around a long time and I will make sure I get my moneys worth.

TO: mr_lalli Just because it has "new technology" inside it that makes it "worth" that $600 doesnt mean its NOT overpriced. What if someone wanted to put a coffee maker, microwave, game console, blow dryer together and charge $1500 for it. Just because it has some new/good technology doesnt mean its a good deal. The majority of the consumers dont need a coffee maker/microwave/gameconsole/ect together no matter how "good of a deal" it is. Just like sony and their blu-ray

"This morning, US Sony reps told GameSpot that, despite the European delay and the AP report of reduced shipment numbers, the previous estimates still stood. "[We] have announced that 2 million will be available in the world come November 11 and 17 and 4 million by the end of the calendar year," said a spokesperson." Unbelievable, if they aren't changing any numbers that they first decided on then watch delay europe launch date?

LoL!..dang! there's been nothing but bad news for Sonyfanboys. The HD cable not included, Numbers of PS3s available slashed, Assassin's Creed not an exclusive, and Euro gamers get denied 'till March '07. Euro gamers do yourself a favor and buy a 360 if you haven't yet, because you missing out on the great games it has and pluss you'll be paying a lot less to play games. Tell me would pay less to play Assassin' s Creed on a system that it will be just as good on?

While it certainly is bad news, these shipment forecast, at least they're not pushing back the launch date to 2007. However, it should be pointed out the this is just the latest in a long line a blows for Sony and its PS3 system. If you remember, the ps3 was supposed to come out the spring of 2006, then it was pushed back to the fall. Then the GTA being released for 360 and ps3 at the same time. Then the systems price tag, $600 (or $500 if you want the HDMI less version that wont do the systems purported 1080p resolution). There's the controller design which while a million times better than the prototype shown at E3 2005, still gives up the tried and true vibration function for a gimmicky Tilt and Roll function that will be rarely used. Then you have it losing exclusivity for titles like Assassins Creed, and eventually Mercenaries 2 and Unreal Tournament 2007, as well as losing some games all together, like Alan Wake. There is also the fact that Gears of War is coming out about the same time as the luanch date for the PS3 ( unless of course Sony Changes it again). Then you add the fact you will have to buy the HD cables separately for both versions. combine that with the purported price of the systems Blue-Ray based games of $60-$80 each and you add up to picture of doomsday for the system. I have no plans of getting one (ever since I heard the price, before that I was considering it) nor do any of my friends, 3 of them are getting a wii, two of them are getting a Xbox 360, heck, not even the biggest Sony fan boy I know is getting one, to think of all the times I had arguments with him in the XBOX vs. PS2, and before that the Dreamcast vs. PS2, even he has abandoned Sony, ( he plans on getting a Xbox 360 now) Bottom line, Sony is losing it, their fan base, their profit potential, their minds. Their arrogance in saying things like, people will buy what they make no matter how much it cost just because its Sony, and that they not only expect to maintain their market position (some 70% here in the us) but increase it as well. Sorry Sony, but the facts don't add up.

I can't wait until the PS3 launches so I can get one. But I can't help but wonder if it would be best if the PS3 was to launch all over the world at March. Gives the PS3 more time to be made. Gets to have new Hardware in it. Plus Launch games would look super awesome. So I think that would be the best move.

Its funny to hear so much hatred. The same hatred that was said when the PS2 was announced. Meh, people will see at the end who laughs... again.

Blu Ray movies are not region free..just the games thisissami. Sony is digging its own grave..nuff said. No good launch titles..and the ones worth buying the console dont even have a solid release date.

GrayWolf323 read the article before attacking others. Sony's two heads are talking and contradicting each other. It is hard to figure out which one to believe 500k or 2 million. When thinking about which is true, which is more likely to be true. When Sony starts to constantly say the same thing over and over again, what does that usually mean? A lie, a half truth, somethings not right

hey Schillinger, where did you get your information? The PS2 had the "highest bugged : working console ratio in history"? Who gave you that information? You and your buddies have a few broken PS2's between yourselves? I mean really now, you seem to be suffering from an extreme case of Know-It-All-ism. DEATH TO SONY FOR SUPPLYING US WITH ENTIRTAINMENT AT A COST WE MAY OR MAY NOT AGREE WITH THAT WE DONT HAVE TO BUY IF WE DONT WANT TO AND WILL NOT EFFECT OUR LIVES IN ANYWAY BUT WE WANT TO GET REALLY ANGRY SOUNDING ON THE INTERNET ABOUT!!!!!!! BOOO!!!!! you people are amazing.

Unless this is the same issue, you can expect this number to drop even more. I work at best buy and we have been having issues with sony's blu-ray dvd players and the laser getting stuck or giving a read error.
