Commodore 64 knocking down Virtual Console door

Classic home computer to become the oldest offering on Nintendo's downloadable game service, but only in Europe.

Commodore 64 fans have been teased with the idea of the vintage gaming experiences of their younger years replicated on the Wii for a while now. In 2006, System 3 first confirmed its plans to remake Epyx Games classics like California Games and Impossible Mission for Nintendo's latest console.

While those projects haven't materialized on the Wii yet, the 1982 home computer is getting another crack at contemporary audiences as Nintendo today confirmed that original C64 titles will be debuting soon on the system's European Virtual Console downloadable game service.

Commodore 64 games will share the same prices as most Nintendo Entertainment System games on the Virtual Console, clocking in at 500 Wii points ($5). The first wave of titles to appear on the service will include Uridium and International Karate, and Commodore Gaming is promising that more titles from the legacy system's library of more than 4,000 games will be added to the Virtual Console on a regular basis.

Hmm, System 3... Now that company developed and published one of the best games and is one of my first/best game experiences ever... And that's the Last Ninja series...! The legendary first one... ('The Dungeons'-level OMG!) The mind-blowing second one... And the somewhat disappointing but still cool third one... The graphics and music of LN3 were/was the best i've seen/heard on the C64, but somehow the game didn't grip me as much as the first two... I seriously consider purchasing a Wii just to play these and a slew(4000+!) of other games again...

Man this blows!! I had a Commodore 128 for almost 10 years, and there were a LOT of good times playing the old Epyx titles. All the Winter Games, Summer Games, etc. Why the hell are they only releasing these in Europe?!?! Commodore owners were everywhere in the US in the 1980s. Where's our love?

I'd kill to see a version of MULE with online multiplayer. Jumpman and Impossible Mission are big favourites of mine too. And vintage RPG fans could get weeks of gameplay out of the original Ultima, Wizardry and Bard's Tale games.

Oh please. . . the games will never live up to the memories. It was my first computer but the Amiga is THE games machine that needs to be re-born on VC. If you're in your late 20's, there were only two computers that owned the game world (much like two consoles in the console world - SNES and Megadrive). They were the Atari and the Amiga. . . and as a smug ex-Amiga owner, I want SWOS, Kick Off 2 and Monkey Island (1 &2) back. . . heck just release the whole catalogue! Sorry to re-open the Atari vs Amiga debate but the Amiga was THE BEST!

Hmm. I don't like that they are charging the same price that they charge for NES games. The NES was definetly more powerful graphics wise and generally had longer games. However, I would love to see some old favorites like Jumpman and Beachhead on the Wii. Those are games I would definetly pay for.

Nice to see Nintendo doing this. I would like to see the ZX Spectrum though, on the VC, that had a silly amount of games on it and you could buy them for £1.99 at the local newsagent. ahhh those rose tinted glasses, nothing quite like them.

Wow, that's.... just awful. Instead of working on some nice vc releases for their own systems, they're pimping themselves and their time out to someone else's older games. I'm sure some of you are excited about this, but... I dunno.

I forgot about Archon! That was a great 2 player game. I had the perfect method to beat the computer opponent quickly every time. Online play for that one would be great for those who remembered the original.

Archon was one of my favorite games! I'm surprised it never was really redone like so many other classic games. Way of the Exploding Fists, Karateka, Bruce Lee, and World Karate Championship were also great fighting-style games! Airborne Ranger was a good military action game. Wizball and Skate or Die! were also favorites of mine! Hopefully they port some of these games to the Wii!

It's just an European debut not exclusivity. Just a few days or weeks to be made available for USA I'd wager. I'm looking forward to Myth.

@canitbe: Too young to remember the C64? My first system was an Intellivision, if you don't count the Magnavox Odyssey that was collecting mold in my basement. Very kind of you to think so, though!

Some of C64's games are worth $5. Others aren't worth having for free! I know because my uncle had C64 and Atari 2600 in the early '80s. Some 2600 games would be cool.

I used to own a c64 and think $5 is reasonable, but only for the best games, like dizzy, rainbow islands, bubble bobble, turrican, armalyte, creatures, rick dangerous, etc. However, there were others that were shockingly bad, that i wouldn't even download for free!!!

Reason most likely being they will be in PAL format first. Hopefully they can convert them to NTSC or 480P in the future. Looking forward to Karnov, Batman the Movie and Stunt Track Racer.

"Point 2: for the people complaining about the price. Go on ebay right now and look up commodore 64 games" That represents the worth of the games as collector's items, not the games themselves. Five dollars for Uridium and IK in digital form is kind of steep. For $20 you could buy a C64 Direct-to-TV game, which has both those games, plus many more. And you'd be playing it on original hardware.
