Codemasters has today released new information on Colin McRae Rally 04, which it recently announced is in development for the PlayStation 2 and Xbox. Scheduled for release this winter, the game will allow you to compete in eight different rally championships from around the world, and, unlike in last year's edition, you'll be able to do so as any driver, rather than being limited to McRae (who, incidentally, is driving for Citroen rather than Ford this season).

Each national championship in the game will offer special two- and four-wheel-drive competitions in addition to the full rally, and for the first time players will be able to compete in the same season as rivals or as teammates. In the individual stages and rally modes the game will support both alternating play for up to four drivers and split-screen play for up to four on the Xbox or two on the PS2.

New to the series in Colin McRae Rally 04 are the parts-testing challenges, where, no matter which of the game's 20-plus vehicles you've chosen to drive, you'll be able to test and subsequently win new technologies for your car. By successfully completing a challenge, you might win a new engine, new tires, or improved suspension, which you'll then be able to put to good use during your current rally season.

Colin McRae Rally 04 is currently scheduled for release on the PS2 and Xbox toward the end of this year. For more information, check out our previous coverage of the game.
