COD4, Orange Box, BioShock, Rock Band D.I.C.E. up Interactive Achievement Awards

Activision's military shooter takes top prize, but 2K Games' undersea actioner, Valve's compilation, and MTV/Harmonix's rhythm game also get their props.

LAS VEGAS--What the Oscars and the Emmys are to film and television, the Interactive Achievement Awards wants to be to games. Its sponsor, the Academy of Interactive Arts and Sciences, not only takes its nomenclature cues from the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences and the Academy of Television Arts & Sciences, it also put on a glitzy affair for the 11th Annual Interactive Achievement Awards, which unfolded Thursday night in the largest ballroom in the Red Rock Casino and Resort in Las Vegas.

After an extended red carpet ceremony, the awards began fashionably late, with a group of sharply attired executives and cramped reporters rubbing elbows in front of the awards hall. After the obligatory hobnobbing and posing for cameras, the nearly 1,000-strong crowd gradually seated themselves and awaited the entrance of emcee Jay Mohr, who hosted the event for the third year running.

Unlike past events, this year's awards tried to enforce a strict "business attire" dress code on its nearly all-male audience. As evidenced by the flood of denim entering the hall, the upscale fashion edict didn't take. However, the skewed gender ratio of the audience did not go unnoticed by Jay. "It's like a hooker's fantasy in here," he proclaimed after taking the stage after several false starts.

Mohr then delivered some impromptu statistical analysis: "So 38 percent of gamers are women and older and 20 percent are over 50....that means 10 percent of gamers are cougars! Or as I like to call then, MILFs--moms I'd like to frag."

Following a round of applause, Mohr entered into a less typically NC-17-rated monologue than usual. "We’re streaming live on the Web right now," he said referring to GameSpot's live webcast, "so keep the profanity to a minimum." He then jokingly challenged a certain game designer: "I'm talking to you, Jaffe!" Appearing later on in the broadcast, the infamously outspoken game developer did not disappoint, letting forth a B-52's worth of F-bombs just to make his point.

Mohr's opening monologue also obliquely--and explicitly--referenced Web animator Zero Punctuation's recent review of Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare. The subtle cue was no accident. The critically acclaimed shooter from Activision and its Infinity Ward studio took home the evening's biggest prizes, including overall game of the year, console game of the year, action game of the year, and outstanding achievement in online game play.

Tying COD4 at the four-award mark was top-nominee-getter BioShock, which won outstanding achievement in sound design, outstanding achievement in original music composition, outstanding achievement in story development, and outstanding achievement in art direction. Another favorite, Harmonix and MTV Games' Electronic Arts-distributed rhythm game Rock Band, took home trophies for outstanding innovation in gaming, outstanding achievement in soundtrack, and family game of the year.

Another title scoring a trifecta wasn't exactly a newcomer. Valve Software's Orange Box, which compiles 2004's Half-Life 2 with its two episodic sequels, the online shooter Team Fortress, and the darkly comic puzzler Portal took computer game of the year, outstanding achievement in game play engineering, and outstanding character performance. Other notable winners of the evening include World of Warcraft: The Burning Crusade (massively multiplayer game of the year), Super Mario Galaxy (adventure game of the year), and Mass Effect (role-playing game of the year).

But perhaps the night's biggest winner was Ken Kutaragi, the former head of Sony Computer Entertainment and the so-called "Father of the PlayStation." Largely unseen since he retired from Sony last June, the executive looked relaxed, sporting a tailored leather jacket and semilong hair as he took the stage to receive a lifetime achievement honor. However, the once-famously-aloof executive delivered a heartfelt speech thanking his family, colleagues, and the industry for the chance to help turn games from a novelty activity into mainstream entertainment.

Found an awsome Easter Egg for Half Life 2! As soon as u get out of the train at the very beginning, use the NOCLIP cheat, and fly out of the train station. Then u should see another building just floating near The train station. Inside, you can see the portal test chamber that started it all.

Why aren't you talking about The Orange Box? I mean for any of you who havn't played TF2 it is the best game if you like strategy and gameplay and dont want to be pissed off every time you die. And the Half-Life series!! I mean HOW CAN'T YOU LIKE THEM? They are brilliant and even though they may appear un-realistic you don't notice and you are sucked in and feel part of the world that VALVe have created. Now i get to Portal... WOW It may be small, you may only want to play it once. but if you have it you wan't to show it off and brag and brag about how great it is and how you beat it and how you aren't confused about the complexity of using the portalgun to pass the tasks. I personally recon that it is a master peice. And Ha! $50 (US) FFS its cheap... over all i rate the whole thing 9.5 out of 10 im great. =D If you read this... i say nw.

Wow, COD4 game of the year? That's so f-ed up. It's a military shooter that had a decent single player and great multiplayer. Don't get me wrong, I liked the hell out of the game, but GOTY? Really? I'm sorry, but you people have your priorities wrong. Bioshock is and will be one of the greatest games of all time because it's so unique and engaging.

To ----jamx97---- i got halo 3 and played online for about 2 weeks before it got boring, once you have got passed having fun on some features or going in some vehicles its really dull nothing makes you want to keep playing. Unlike COD4 there are weapon unlocks, custom weapons, custom weapon sets, EXP multiplyers and loads of unlocks to keep the game fresh as you play it. I judge a game by its game play not features.

i rented COD 4 and thought it was average. played it for a week and went back to HALO 3. COD 4 is just to slow and plain. i did not like the overall sound of the game, the people running around and the stupid bullets flying unrealistically all over the place. And the voice of those rag heads just annoyed me. As for H3, I thought should have won or at least been nominated for GOTY. I mean more things to do in H3 ie jumping, grenade placing, dual wielding, equipment use, strategically using various combination of weapons to win the game, THE BATTLE RIFLE, sniping, vehicles, jacking vehicles, jump portals. In addition, forge, theatre, file sharing etc.. so many features and different strategies to employ while playing. COD 4 is just plain avgerage and that is why more poeple on XBL play halo 3 than COD 4. Why anyone would think COD 4 is better is beyond me, it is without a shadow of a doubt way overrated.

I agree with this. I mean I always liked Cod series, yet I never loved playing it in multiplayer. I am more Counterstrike/UT/Quake fan. And this new CoD is a great game but it is too short in singleplayer especially for the money I gave for it.

Hi, A game can be good to play in single player mode but be boring or less good when playing multiplayer. Or this game don't have multiplayer mode. And in same way, a game can be good to play online but be boring or less good when playing singleplayer. Or this game don't have singleplayer mode. In same side a game can be good, but player need to pay money each month to play with it online. In this case it's not the same that to buy a game and be able to play this game online without need pay something by month. We must put things in perspective. We must compare similar products. Else we must say what is hide behind, like companies who ask pay fee by mounth to be able to play their games. So I find you must add categories in your award to represent the reality. So why not add FREE and PAY games in your awards. Free meaning player buy the game and no need pay money to play this game online. Pay meaning player must pay money to be able to play this game online. Why not to number your awards? Like that: 1- Overall Game of the Year 2- Console Game of the Year 3- Computer Game of the Year 4- Handheld Game of the Year 5- Massively Multiplayer Game of the Year 6- Action Game of the Year 7- Strategy/Simulation Game of the Year 8- Sports Game of the Year 9- Adventure Game of the Year 10- Outstanding Innovation in Gaming 11- Outstanding Achievement in Game Design 12- Racing Game of the Year 13- Role-Playing Game of the Year 14- Outstanding Achievement in Sound Design 15- Outstanding Achievement in Soundtrack 16- Outstanding Achievement in Original Music Composition 17- Downloadable Game of the Year 18- Outstanding Achievement in Online Game Play 19- Outstanding Achievement in Game Play Engineering 20- Outstanding Achievement in Story Development 21- Outstanding Character Performance 22- Outstanding Achievement in Visual Engineering 23- Outstanding Achievement in Art Direction 24- Outstanding Achievement in Animation 25- Family Game of the Year You have the following prize: 18- Outstanding Achievement in Online Game Play But why not add the following: Free to play online -------------------- Best Multiplayer Games Best LAN Games Best Popular Games Best Fisrt Person Shooter Game Best Real Time Strategy Game Pay money to play online ------------------------ Best Multiplayer Games Best LAN Games Best Popular Games Best Fisrt Person Shooter Game Best Real Time Strategy Game Where Multiplayer mean playable on Internet (online). Singleplayer (Offline) ---------------------- Best Fisrt Person Shooter Game Best Real Time Strategy Game Strategy games are not simulations games. Better to give each a award.

I like to think D.I.C.E. awards aren't fixed. Of course, we all do. This is an informative update, but Tim Surette & Laura Swisher did a below-average job in the "AIAS Red Carpet" interviews in the video herein. The production was so poor & their questions so redundant that I had to stop watching fifteen minutes into what could have been a great video (interviews with big-wigs from Blizzard, 2K, Activision, etc.)

Looking at this list I am under the impression that Crysis didn't win the Computer Game of the Year award simply because it's not a multiplatform title.

CoD 4 was nominated in almost every catagory that it could be. I even think it was nominated for best score (musical score that is)! You could even tell just by looking at the nominations it was fixed that CoD 4 would be the winner. To be honest id say these rewards are more a popularity contest than anything else. Still CoD 4 is a good game, and mabye should have deserved the award, i myself would have chosen SMG, but thats just my opinion.

Just so you guys know, the Gamespot awards are actually more popular, at the very least SMG got the adventure award, I really think COD4 got way too much, I was really hoping it won't get GOTY, anything but COD4 and Halo3. However, the latter won sadly. A game that has too much propaganda is a no no in my book, despite all technical achievements, this is something many of you won't like, but at an international spectrum, many will understand my point.

Mass Effect could have been a great game, its bugs prevented it from getting higher achievements sadly. As for GOTY, my pick was COD 4 or Bioshock. COD 4 slightly because of a truely addictive multiplayer and breathtaking visuals at 60FPS. If only the Campaign was longer, than its a 10/10 for me.

Mass Effect should have got GOTY, but its a thinking game unlike the twitchy finger COD. Still COD had a decent SP(C130 mission rocked) and the multiplayer is the top notch for FPS's(just wish guns sounded like real guns in the game). Im so glad AC didnt get the same kind of pandering that the revier on GS gave it. That game is a POS so in my book I am pritty happy of the results. As far as nedo99 is concerned I would say play more games, AC was a derivative POS that had no heart and sole with a **** storyline and a repetative game mechanic. Hell I am playing Blue Dragon right now and find the random battle system to be far less repetative then the POS that Assasins Creed is. On a final note Dirt should have got best racer, because it truely is, the only reason why it didnt get it was because its a game not many people played. Its one of those games that I played the demo(not expecting to like it) and was just totaly blown away with the sense of speed that the and the amazing graphical experience that the game provides. Sure you cant upgrade your cars(hopefully you can in the next one), but you can fine tune them to your liking and they are the best looking cars in any racer out there. I suppose the other major downfall of the game was the lack of MP, which I suppose could take the racing title away from it because that is a nessesity of Racers these days.

What's BluRay for again? Putting 10 Gigs worth of music to fill up disk space. Would Bioshock play better if it was on BR disk or is there a difference with COD4 between 2 platforms?

To those whining about Orange Box winning the character award, you seem to cite only the Portal characters or Team Fortress characters. Has everyone forgotten about Episode 2? Episode 2 was fantastic, it had everything that made Half-Life 2 great, and hosted some of the most epic battles in an FPS game. You seem to forget Alyx was one of the characters, and a damn compelling one at that. (Still wonder why CoD4 won GOTY though. Great multiplayer, but that's all anyone talks about. Shouldn't the single-player be important too? And to be honest, while CoD4's singleplayer is fun, it doesn't compare to Orange Box or Bioshock.)

Super Mario Galaxy should've won more awards. It was easily GOTY.

@lamprey263- I totally agree with you that COD4 has an awesome multiplayer experience. I have always respected the level of entertainment Infinity ward was able to accomplish with their multiplayer maps and gameplay. I am merely stating that a game of the year should challenge and set a precedence for other games to come, as well as instilling an emotional aspect that many gamers will recollect for years to come. Unfortunately I didn't feel this with COD4 as it was much of the same old for me.

Wow no love for assassin's creed. Isnt this supposed to b awards for like technical achievements! I mean yeah i luv my COD4 and Orange Box, but cmon portal was cool and everything but it only lasted all of 3 hours even though im still laughing. Assassins creed was unlike anything iv ever played b4 and probably ever will unless its another Assassin's creed. I mean i really think ubisoft made something nobodys ever touched upon ( not to that scale at least). Ppl trash it for being repetitive, but remember this is the first of its kind and I thought that everything looked so smooth and crisp and awesome that i wouldnt mind seeing it again. Anyway i think it should have won character performence(i mean portal cmon u dont even see the character or know her name) and been nominated for story development, character performance and console GOTY(WTF Mass effect i havent heard one person i know that likes it. It seems like a game for role-playing trekkies who wanna have wierd fantasies with aliens.)

I think that these awards are flawed because if a game is GOTY it wil automatically win another award in it's genre (action rpg etc.) and if that game had multiplayer it would also win that award as well, so if a game is GOTY then it automatically wins three awards? Whatever genre the GOTY is in, that genre's award should be disabled I think. I'm really dissapointed with COD4 receiving GOTY all across the board when it tried nothing new with the gameplay. It's multiplayer is fun but god it gets boring after a while since the gametypes are so generic and there's no twists on any standard ones. When COD6 eventually comes out, I wouldn't be surprised if it hasn't changed that much from COD4 ((btw no.5 is set in ww2) and hopefully, it won't receive GOTY again...

@prophetng2 - well, I definately get a lot of replay out of Call of Duty 4 through the multiplayer, this is already after I exhausted playing the single player campaign. I think leveling up and completing challenges in multiplayer to get better equipment and perks are those thing that keeps people playing online... well, that and the fact that online multiplayer is a lot of fun, and CoD4 does it really well.

How COD4 can be given game of the year is beyond me as a gamer. I believe a game of the year title should challenge one's concepts of a game as well as establishing an emotional connection throughout the entire experience. How can COD4, with its same rehashed call of duty game play, get top billing with people? Have these people not played the old COD titles? Same run and shoot game play, same explosion filled environments, same limited story experience. The only thing different in this game was the better visuals and the modern setting. Although this game was fun in the COD setting it hardly evoked anything other than a rehashed, overdone style that will ultimately be forgotten over much more memorable games.

COD 4 is a great game!! I play it for my PS3 all the time. I also play Halo 3 a lot as well. Both games are fantastic but I feel COD 4 gets going faster online. Halo 3 I have to search for people to frag and by the time I find them, others have gained points because I am trekking across a map that is too large for a simple six player map. COD 4 has a radar that is more intuitive in my opinion. These are only my opinions and therefore are not set in stone. Halo 3 on the other hand has some HUGE multi-player maps that keeps the player always moving. Each has their strong points and weak. It's just a game. Enjoy it.

Only one award to Super Mario Galaxy? See, this is why I like GameSpot. They know good games. Generally.

Dang, God of War 2 didn't get an award, though at least it was nominated, but Persona 3 didn't even get a nomination for best RPG, and Eternal Sonata Rogue Galaxy did; wtf?!
