Call Of Duty: Black Ops Cold War: Details On Multiplayer, Warzone, And Zombies

Here's what to expect from multiplayer and Zombies mode, including cross-gen support and Warzone integration.

Activision has officially announced Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War as part of a big reveal event. The details have primarily been focused on the single-player campaign, story, and character creation tools, but the debut trailer for the game did tease multiplayer at the end--and we've also separately learned a few details regarding Cold War's multiplayer, Zombies mode, and Warzone integration, too.

Zombies Mode Is In Call Of Duty: Black Ops Cold War

Treyarch's signature Zombies mode returns for Black Ops Cold War. Unfortunately, that's basically everything we know--the mode is included in some form, and it'll receive new content post-launch, just like multiplayer (as referenced below). Beyond that, we'll have to wait until more Zombies details are shared at a later date.

Call Of Duty: Black Ops Cold War Cross-Gen And Cross-Play

A huge part of Cold War's multiplayer component is that there will not only be cross-play support, but also cross-generation support. What this means is that, for example, someone on PS4 can play against someone on Xbox Series X, or any other variation between consoles and generations. Cold War is slated to release on PC, PS4, Xbox One, PS5, and Xbox Series X. However, it appears next-gen upgrades won't be free unless paying for the $70 version of the game or above.

Battle Royale Continues in Warzone

Another important thing to know is that Treyarch is not building a sequel to its own battle royale game, Blackout, but instead incorporating elements of Cold War into Warzone. Like Modern Warfare before it, Cold War will feature shared progression with Warzone. There will be "inventory items" that can be used in both games.

Activision also stressed that existing Warzone players will get to keep all of the content they earned or paid for in Modern Warfare, including Operators, weapon blueprints, and more. Activision will share further specifics about how Cold War and Warzone work together in the future.

Black Ops Cold War Multiplayer

Beyond Warzone, Cold War will have its own dedicated multiplayer element, but similarly, only a few details are available now. There will be a battle pass and a "steady stream" of post-launch DLC that covers multiplayer maps and modes, along with more "Zombies experiences" and in-game events.

The full details on Cold War's multiplayer modes will be announced on September 9, while additional Zombies details will be made public "in the coming weeks." Activision will host a Black Ops Cold War open beta prior to the game's launch. Pre-ordering a digital edition of the game will get you early access to the beta, with PS4 users getting in even earlier than those on other platforms.

Black Ops Cold War releases on November 13 for PS4, Xbox One, and PC. The game will also launch on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X later in the year when those consoles arrive.
