City of Heroes 2 trademark filed

NCsoft makes filing with US Patent & Trademark Office to lock down naming rights for sequel to superhero MMORPG.

Fans of muscled protagonists in spandex may be in luck. It looks like the massively multiplayer superhero role-playing game City of Heroes is getting a full-fledged follow-up. Korean publisher NCSoft has filed for a trademark with the US Patent and Trademark Office for "City of Heroes 2" for use with "computer game software". The original City of Heroes sold over a half-million units in the US, and its semi-sequel City of Villains sold nearly a quarter of a million copies domestically, according to the NPD Group.

You are entitled to a sequel…maybe.
You are entitled to a sequel…maybe.

City of Heroes was developed by Cryptic Studios, which recently released Star Trek Online and Champions Online. However, since Cryptic was bought by France-based Atari in 2008, development duties for City of Heroes have been handled by Paragon Studios, the Silicon Valley based shop formerly known as NCsoft North. Founded in 2007, the studio has grown from an original roster of 20 employees to more than 50 people--a number that will presumably increase if City of Heroes 2 goes into full-fledged development.

Inspired by comic books, City of Heroes lets players assume the role of a superhero and fight a variety of villains in the fictional metropolis of Paragon City. Players can customize their heroes with a variety of costumes and items and hundreds of different superpowers, skills, and abilities. They can then form alliances with other characters, create secret headquarters, and fight evil to become the top superhero squad in the city.

And 5 years latter we now see what has happened to City of Heroes/City of Villains. NC Crap closes down CoH/CoV and gives it's servers to what should have been the successor of Guild Wars the highly hyped Guild Wars 2. They wanted the Guild Wars base to move over to Guild Wars 2, but after that core of players tried it they went back to Guild Wars highly disappointed in Guild Wars 2. So the core players that NC Crap was hoping would go to Guild Wars 2 never happened and they alienated all the people they could have had as customers with Guild Wars and City of Heroes/Villains. If they had only spent the money they should have in the first place by keeping both communities happy and only putting out Guild Wars 2 after they had made sure It was perfect. Now they have disappointed everyone and alienated thousands. Good Going NC Crap for showing the world what not to do.

City of Heroes back pre i5 was the best MMO around hands down. Than i5 and E.D hit and...it was never the same. I played GR all day today, not impressed at all. That was a waste of money, hope DC Universe Online gives me more of that new awesome feeling CoH used to, when CoH2 comes out I will definantly be there opening day buying it, but as for the original I just cancelled my account...for the last time.

It will be a breath of fresh air for CoH with Going Rouge, but CoH2 I hope will as wonderful as when CoH first came out.

Zyxe Cryptic was the nerf happy ones, this is Paragon Studios so who knows. I too was furious over the nerf to unlimited targeting. But I tell you what, I will give City of Heroes 2 a try if it's a complete restart/overhaul from the ground up. I think it can work better the 2nd time around now the pitfalls have been mapped.

it'll be great. you'll feel like an all-powerful hero. then, after about 2 issues, the nerfhammer will fall. then they'll give you another power class/power. then they'll nerf that. so, to make up for it, they'll give you a way to make customize stuff and make it fun again. but then it's too fun, and you're too powerful, so that has to be stopped. on and on and on.... seriously, though. i loved CoH, would love a second one that starts with the best of CoH and continues the legacy, but i just know it'll be just like all the other MMOs with the nerfhammer. hard to get excited about that.

Yet another subpar MMO that'll pollute our emails with invites to double-XP weekends.

@ Malhound the marvel mmo you speak was scraped a while ago and if I'm not very much mistaken the most of the parts that had been developed were striped of anything that looked marvel and was turned into champions online

Maybe it will be good now that Cryptic isn't handling it anymore. After all of Cryptic's failed attempts, I won't play anything they make. But it would be interesting to see how Paragon would handle a CoH 2.

AH another 7.5 overall game (max) that only the die hards will stick to. Most people will try just it hoping it can save their souls from WOW only to be let down, with incomplete missions, bugs, and be abandoned by producers within months of release. Tis the truth... now let's punish me for telling the truth.

Who will develop Marvel Universe Online? There is an online game featuring the DC Universe. What happened to Moto Assault anyway.

I thought that was supposed to be Champions Online.Oh, wait, that didn't do too well.Well, anyway, unless it's truly dramatically different, like EQ1 compared to 2, then it's just going to divide the user base and we will be left with two bad games instead of one pretty good one.

@chikhiro94 that depends entirely on what all needs to be actually done to make it. If they use an already made engine, similar design, etc. they could easily do it in a 2-3 years. Plus NCsoft has a bit of experience making them, so it will probably help. Now whether it will be a solid finished MMO is another question I can't answer. I am looking forward to see if it works. As others mentioned CO was a letdown and I played CoX off and on for 3 years, so been waiting for a good superhero mmo. There were a lot of problems with CoX for several years but maybe they can fix those now with CoH2.

Why do they have to trademark "City of Heroes 2" if they already own "City of Heroes"?

@warrner11 I've heard it takes 4-6 years to make a MMO, so if they started TODAY then it might come out in 2014 or so?

City of Heroes is amazing! After playing (for at least three months) at least two dozens of MMOs (including WoW, LotRO, D&D Online, EVE and Ultima) it was the best experience I had and quickly became my favourite MMO. I subscribed it for a bit more than two years, only then I got bored. Now may make a sequel? I so wish this comes true. Champion's Online was a huge letdown for me.

@colt_a COH will be getting an end-game system with Going Rogue (the expansion) and in i19. No real details other than they're called "Incarnate levels," will require Going Rogue, will start 1 in GR, and will add 9 more in i19. Hopefully more info will come soon - I've got two 50's I'd love to do more with :)

If they put in some end-game content, and make quests less repetitive, they could easily win back everyone who ever played CoH/CoV or Champion's Online. I look forward to seeing what they do.

The first one, I would play for awhile, love it, then get bored after around a month. They need to fix the formula for it. Maybe give more of a variety of moves in your setlist. Say the 2 powers you can get at level 10 do different things, but are on the same cool down timer.. so you can fight enemies differently depending on the situation. Something even as easy as that. Anyways, here is hoping this one works out. I really want to get into a good super hero MMO.

If you want saturated look at the fantasy genre. So far its looking like the hero genre can at least say that their games, mechanically, are significantly different from each other. There's no mistaking COH and CO's gameplay, whereas most fantasy games are very similar to each other.

I seem to see the Superhero MMO genre becoming more and more saturated. First City of Heroes, then Champions Online, next DC Universe Online, and Marvel Universe is now revived. That's of course without mentioning this name claim for CoH2. It's kinda why I'm looking forward to games like APB.
