Chrono Trigger Director Wants to See "High-End" Remake

Takashi Tokita would also settle for a movie of the classic Square Enix RPG.

Chrono Trigger director Takashi Tokita has said he'd like to see Square Enix bring the critically acclaimed RPG back in some form.

Speaking to Game Informer, Tokita said Chrono Trigger, which is considered to be one of the best RPGs of all time, was special because it united two beloved franchises, Dragon Quest and Final Fantasy.

No Caption Provided

"It's probably considered sacred since the companies merged," he said. "It was essentially a dream mix between Final Fantasy and Dragon Quest; creating or exceeding what it was in its original form is a very difficult feat."

Reflecting on its development, Tokita said the development team reached "a couple hundred" people at the same time, including many developers that would go on to define the Final Fantasy franchise.

Other members of Chrono Trigger's all-star development team included Yoshinori Kitase, credited with directing many of the best Final Fantasy titles; Hironobu Sakaguchi, creator of Final Fantasy; Yuji Horii, creator of Dragon Quest; Dragon Ball Z creator and artist Akira Toriyama; and legendary Final Fantasy soundtrack composer Nobuo Uematsu.

"It was kind of like a grand festival--it was really fun. [Final Fantasy designer and artist Tetsuya] Nomura was actually creating the environment background pieces in Chrono Trigger--like the courthouse scene, that was created by him."

Tokida added that, ideally, he'd like to see a "high-quality, high-end" version of Chrono Trigger, a "movie production, or something of the sort."

Chrono Trigger was released for the Super Nintendo in 1995. It has been re-released for Nintendo DS, iOS, and Android. A spiritual successor for the first PlayStation called Chrono Cross was released in 1999.

Square Enix has confirmed Final Fantasy 15's release date as September 30. It is also re-making Final Fantasy 7, which will reportedly be delivered in multiple instalments.

I'd absolutely love to see Chrono Trigger remade, or at least a new game in the Chrono series! However, I don't want it to happen with Square Enix's current state whose brilliant ideas are to butcher everything by either turning it into mobile or episodic games...

@ixilion:you do know that FF7 isnt the normal "episodic game" like Hitman its more like the FF13 series were it will be fill games but i dont think you got any thing but hate and negative thought or understand you will never get the "Childhood Feel" from a game back

@Mokuba34: No hate or negative thoughts here...I just don't think a game that originally came as one should be split up and sold as full games all for the standard price each. As for the FFXIII trilogy, they weren't even one whole game to begin with. I like being able to enjoy my games instead of feeling ripped off b/c of a few bad business ideas, and this isn't even the first time Square has done something like this.

@ixilion: The FF7 remake is going to be a totally different game storywise anyway, so they're not really splitting anything up.

@ixilion: Made a larger comment about the "episode" topic below and really liked the 13 games and still say if it didn't have "Final Fantasy" in the title people wouldn't of complained soo much about it but i understand my taste in games never seem to match with the mass public which is cool

No company is perfect you can only hope they learn from the mistakes of the past but if that "Mistake" is making them loads of cash they probably wont change but i think anyone who has bought game from ubisoft gets the whole "feeling ripped of" quite well the past year :(

@Mokuba34: Can you explain that a little more? Is it going to be a new game all together? Each disk is one game? I dont see how it being episodic is a good move, unless they are creating something new from the ground up, just seems like a scheme unless they are 3 $10 parts that come out relatively quickly. Comparing it to FF13 might not help the case that its a good thing in my opinion (and alll the other ff13 haters)

@muppetbabymastr: It's a trilogy. 3 separate games in the same series. Not 1 game split into 3 parts.

@muppetbabymastr:instead of making one whole game and splitting it up like was done with Hitman they making whole whole games which really has me excited get more detail into the game as well as new story stuff and different battle system

I know everyone likes to hate on FF13 i really enjoyed the games and had a lot of fun with 13-2 still haven't played 13-3 bought the collectors edition haven't had the free time for it :( http://www.gamespot.com/articles/final-fantasy-7-remake-will-be-multiple-full-sized/1100-6438387/ but im just repeating what the FF7 director said

Yoshinori Kitase: "It will essentially be a full scale game for each part of the multi-part series. In XIII, each instalment told the story from a different angle. It was kind of like approaching an unknown territory in a sense."
"Whereas with Final Fantasy VII Remake, we already have a preexisting story, so it wouldn't really make sense if that isn't encompassed in a multi-part series... So if we're just looking at each of these parts, one part should be on par with the scale of one Final Fantasy XIII game." so you will get multiple full length titles for the FF7 remake.

I just wish they could of use used the "Episodic" word as it confused people into something like Hitman and the resident evil revelations 2 where you have 1 game split into smaller parts released over time while they did explain it in more detail later its kinda forgotten as you wont reach as many people as you did on the initial announcment

I always thought it would make a good anime. There probably already was one in Japan.

But I think they should just release a PC version and let the modders update it. It's just too perfect a game to mess with it too much. Look at FF7. All they had to do was update the character models. I was perfectly fine with the pre-rendered backgrounds. Now, if they did pre-rendered backgrounds for Chrono Trigger or even Resonance of Fate level graphics...that would change my mind. But they won't, at least not without changing everything like they're doing with FF7R.

@Barighm: There is a Chrono Trigger anime, and it's absolutely terrible. It's one (maybe two) episodes and is about monsters going to that carnival from Crono's time. As I recall it doesn't feature any of the game's main characters.

@milk: Then it's not really a Chrono Trigger anime, is it? I'm talking an actual episodic cartoon series that follows the characters' adventures through time, not some one-off tie-in that barely has any connection to the series.

The fact that Square is unable to make another Chrono game is just proof of how messed up the company has become internally. They'll never be able to assemble a dream team like that again.

Fans already took a shot at developing a Chrono Trigger remake of sorts years ago. It was called Chrono Resurrection and Square halted any further development of it.

@Exceed20XX: Yes, I remember very clearly. No offense to those awesome developers/fans, but I really don't want a fan-made game, I want it to be don by Square Enix (well actually, I want it to be done by Squaresoft, but that will never happen). I just can't take the fan-made stuff seriously, be it mods or otherwise. Not belittling these talented people, but I just have more respect for people creating new contents than riding on the coat tail of something that is already established. Its why I was never so excited about Chronotrigger Resurrection coming out.

@The_Last_Paladi:

Considering the reception of SE of late, most fans don't seem to want them touching it again. As-is fan projects have seemingly done more to answer the call of other fans than some original creators themselves as of late. Look at Sonic (the S2HD alpha at least), Streets of Rage (Remake), Black Mesa (HL1), and Halo SPV3.

What fan projects tend to lack in resources/polish they tend to make up for with keeping a pulse on the community they're a part of and often a lot of attention to details. And I often wouldn't call it riding on the coat tails of something bigger. Most of those people just tend to have more passion for a creator's work than the creators themselves seem to as time goes on. Valve could've made Black Mesa entirely on their own but instead they just gave us a straight port of HL1 in the Source engine. Fans officially remade it and got it sanctioned.

A lot of them also use it as a starting point to learn and do their own thing eventually. The Chrono Resurrection folks said they wanted to try something original after their experience there at some point. Also, Freedom Planet was born entirely from a Sonic fan project.

@Exceed20XX: I got respect for what fan projects bring to other fans, but the main issue I have with them still remains, they're just fan projects, not the real portrayals. It is true that they do a great job with giving the fans exactly what they want with these sort of projects, but at the end of the day, they're just imitation of the real thing. I guess as someone who value creativity and is pretty creative myself, I just find it to be unappealing to me. I rather have the people involved with the original CC to create the game again (even if it isn't everyone), whether it is good or bad, it is their game, their portrayal of the game that I am most interested in, not that of the fans. I feel the same way about modding, fan-fiction, and any other related things that fall into the category of fandom taking over and adding their take on something. It is a great way for people to get into game design, I'll give you that. Hopefully they can use these new found skills to come up with something original though and not just mod existing IPs.

Chrono Trigger's music was primarily composed by Yasunori Mitsuda with a few tracks composed by Nobuo Uematsu.

@royanrannedos: Apples and oranges. It was the original creator, western developers are less anal about bringing back old things, and Disney probably didn't care all that much about the IP.

@xantufrog: It would probably look like Blue Dragon or the latter Dragon Quest games, since the characters were designed by Akira Toriyama. If you thought those games had charm, then you'd probably like the look of Chrono Trigger in 3D. I'd be more afraid of a bad sprite replacement like the iPhone version of Final Fantasy VI--the characters have little detail and appear flat and boring.

@The_Last_Paladi: If they did, they'd have to completely redesign the combat system, where every special move was dependent on enemy position on the 2d plane. It wouldn't be the same game without Falcon Slash swooping across the screen, or seeing a trio of startled Imps when you use Cyclone.

Sure, just pitch it to Square, they'll chop it up into 5 different games, then say they won't cut content but there WILL be content cut from the games and rely on nostalgia to sell you the product.

@lnception: Umm, no. I would say Secret of Mana needs a remake, preferably one that removes the bugs (the IOS port still has a few) and takes into account all of the elements cut out of the game because Nintendo nixed the CD-ROM add-on (at least 25% of the game was removed to fit on a cartridge, and the story had to be changed because of this). I'd prefer it wasn't done in the style of Adventures of Mana (the remake of the original game in the Mana series), but I'd take it. Chrono Trigger--what's to improve, other than the overworld map and your ridiculously tiny sprite? If they were to open up the world and give more locations, I would be in, but even the PSOne port on an HDTV still looks amazing, unlike games like, say, Vagrant Story or Xenogears--I could see remakes of those as well.

Chrono Cross has much less critical acclaim?

GameSpot gave it a 10/10, on Metacritic it holds a 94/10 and the Gamespot user score is 93/10

'Much less' is an overstatement...

@Thanatos2k: Only because it took the usual Square route of not making direct sequels. I'd actually be more up for a remake of Cross because most PSOne era polygonal games look terrible on modern televisions, unlike ChronoTrigger, which looks the same as it ever did.

@Thanatos2k: not a direct sequel in my view. Although the CC universe had some connection with Lavos' aftermath they only brought that up (and CT's main trio appearance + Glenn/Frog's family story) to retain some link between both games but cut that out and you've got a totally independent game. Still, can't help but love both.

@nadavkra: I don't see how anyone could argue it's not a direct sequel. It takes place in the same world, chronologically after, features returning cast from the first game, deals with direct consequences of the first game, and they even added more tying material to Cross in the DS re-release of Trigger.

YES PLEASE! One of my favorite games of all time. Just a brilliant RPG. The characters, the settings, the endings. Everything about it was perfect for me. Doubt they could recreate the magic but I would love it if they tried. Same with Chrono Cross.
