Chrono Trigger Director Wants to See "High-End" Remake

Takashi Tokita would also settle for a movie of the classic Square Enix RPG.

Chrono Trigger director Takashi Tokita has said he'd like to see Square Enix bring the critically acclaimed RPG back in some form.

Speaking to Game Informer, Tokita said Chrono Trigger, which is considered to be one of the best RPGs of all time, was special because it united two beloved franchises, Dragon Quest and Final Fantasy.

No Caption Provided

"It's probably considered sacred since the companies merged," he said. "It was essentially a dream mix between Final Fantasy and Dragon Quest; creating or exceeding what it was in its original form is a very difficult feat."

Reflecting on its development, Tokita said the development team reached "a couple hundred" people at the same time, including many developers that would go on to define the Final Fantasy franchise.

Other members of Chrono Trigger's all-star development team included Yoshinori Kitase, credited with directing many of the best Final Fantasy titles; Hironobu Sakaguchi, creator of Final Fantasy; Yuji Horii, creator of Dragon Quest; Dragon Ball Z creator and artist Akira Toriyama; and legendary Final Fantasy soundtrack composer Nobuo Uematsu.

"It was kind of like a grand festival--it was really fun. [Final Fantasy designer and artist Tetsuya] Nomura was actually creating the environment background pieces in Chrono Trigger--like the courthouse scene, that was created by him."

Tokida added that, ideally, he'd like to see a "high-quality, high-end" version of Chrono Trigger, a "movie production, or something of the sort."

Chrono Trigger was released for the Super Nintendo in 1995. It has been re-released for Nintendo DS, iOS, and Android. A spiritual successor for the first PlayStation called Chrono Cross was released in 1999.

Square Enix has confirmed Final Fantasy 15's release date as September 30. It is also re-making Final Fantasy 7, which will reportedly be delivered in multiple instalments.

@lordshifu: You can still play the game on an emulator you know. Much better than waiting for the official version to come out, if it ever does.

I'd prefer if they didn't totally destroy its legacy like they have with all of their other series'.

Coincidentally, I've been playing through it for the 1st time and it's great. I've enjoyed it far more than any other JRPG I've tried (admittedly, I'm not really much of a JRPG fan) and it has genuinely surprised me. I'm at the last "quest", the run up to the end and should knock it out this weekend. I wasn't sure if the hype was real since I couldn't get into some of the other heavy hitter from the 16-bit era, but this one is a standout. Don't know if it needs a remake/remaster, but everyone should try it in some form.

@Hoogovens: This game, ladies and gents is nothing short of legen.... "wait for it" ...dary. It's legendary. dammit! I've been awaiting the fabled, "remaster" for some time now. FF VII: Remake's announcement at E3 2015 was huge news. Now if Square Enix earns enough from this nostalgic remake...Just imagine the reaction to a Chrono Trigger remake/sequel being announced!

Just don't lock it to one platform because all that does is prevent people from buying it.

Chrono Cross is a direct sequel, not a spiritual successor. Bioshock is a spiritual successor to System shock, the games don't exist in any related time line/alternative universe, etc, but they have the same feel. Darks Souls may either be a spirutual sucessor or a sleath sequel prequel to demons souls that can't be outright stated due to legal issues. Chrono Cross is just a straight up sequel.

Also I love both games, but some of the Trigger fans really need to shut up and stop being so obnoxious. Both critically and commercially Cross was at least on par with Trigger. So taking your whining and go somewhere else.

@divinejester: well put.. i too love trigger and cross. but to me i prefer cross slightly over trigger.. Both games are freaking awesome..

I would love for square for HD upgrade trigger & Cross even though i know its a very long shot. Oh heck i'll even try a sequel to cross.

Square just seem hell bent on pushing out FF after FF to console and launch new IP on handhelds..

Please don't let this suffer from the FFVII Syndrome. We have already had several re-releases of the game. Just make a new chapter. I could totally get behind an animated adaptation though.

Oh who am I kidding, I'd probably still buy this.

This has been on my mind recently, so this is the perfect time to say this.

I think Magus was cooler than Sephiroth. You get to spend more time with Magus, he appears much earlier and you don't have to wait forever to battle him, he doesn't hide behind Lavos, and you learn more about his backstory, which is both more interesting, relatable, and deep enough that you can postulate on it for years and still not quite get the picture. He actually joins the party without a need for a cheat, is good enough to be worth the effort yet makes you cringe at the idea of doing so, generally succeeds at what he is trying to do, and he has a wicked theme song to boot (I never really liked one-winged angel).

They really gotta stop remaking this game. It was great, but how many re-releases across different platforms do we really need. This game has gotten more re-releases then Final Fantasy.

How about make a brand new Chrono Trigger, here's an idea Chrono Trigger 2.

Please bring back the Toriiyama artwork, nobody cares for Chrono Trigger without the Toriiyama art.

@kazeswen: Er...no, it hasn't gotten that many re-releases, and no, we're talking about a remake, not a re-release. There are scant few games that are deserving of it. This is one of them.

I'd rather they make a new game in the franchise, but still, I would welcome this.

@Barighm: Its already on Android, DS, IPhone and PSX.

Honestly its charm was the Handdrawn Sprite art, you remove the sprite art you essentially lose half of what made Chrono, Chrono. This is why Chrono Cross was a failure, because nobody wanted a 3D polygon Chrono Game.

How would they remake it, aside from adding Polygon Celshaded graphics? Its pointless to do that.

My suggestion is make a brand new game, and try to emulate the original 2D handdrawn look as much as possible.

Also there is already a Chrono Trigger rip-off game that is being released soon that uses Polygons, doesn't look good.

@kazeswen: By the time Chrono Cross was released during the golden era of PSX, most games that featured 2D graphics or 2.5D were severely punished by critic reviews just for not being 3D, with a few exceptions (SOTN). So no, I don't think EVERYBODY back then wanted Toriyama sprite characters. And tbh, many people (especially from EU, like me) did not even know about the existence of CT until Chrono Cross came out, so I don't know what you are talking about. With that being said, I agree, CT wouldn't look good in 3D, like the fanmade remake. Some games look just better in 2D style. In my opinion, Wild Arms looked tenfold better than its remake Wild Arms Alter Code:F.

@Legend002: They released a sequel without the DBZ artwork, its called Chrono Cross. It was shit.

People like the DBZ art. It Single handily made the Dragon Quest franchise.

@kazeswen: Eh, Cross wasn't bad. It just wasn't Chrono Trigger. The characters were in the game, and there were more than a few references, but it wasn't simiar to Chrono Trigger at all. When you buy a sequel to a game, you're perfectly justified in expecting it to be similar in more than just name and a few references.

@justinc882: Sadly, you are more than likely correct. Of course, they could be intelligent and just give it a lower budget "makeover" type treatment instead of the AAA treatment that REQUIRES the game to sell ridiculous levels to justify its massive budget...but they won't. With Square, it's either mainstreamed AAA crud, or mobile crud. Or an Eidos game.

Sometimes I'd like to see what Eidos could do with the FF formula.

As you might be able to deduce, Chrono Trigger is flat out my favorite game of all time. I would die/kill to see a remake/remaster/rehash/sequel. I would even settle for seeing Chrono Cross released on mobile devices. I would pay any amount of money to see this happen in my lifetime. I honestly don't think I'm alone in this.

As much as Square Enix loves to exploit people like me with nostalgia for an insane amount of money, it is only a matter of time. Something's gotta give.

That would be amazing...if done right. Now that's the real challenge, with the current SquareEnix (all action) mind set i don't think they can do it justice.

Turn based or let it rest in peace SE.

Stop fucking with the classics and come up with some new ideas.

Seriously...who the hell would have even the slightest bit of faith in someone re-mastering Chrono Trigger without botching it?

I guarantee the FF VII remake turns out to be a massive letdown that fans will wish never happened.

@frank_castle: I'd have faith in the fans doing a remaster. True fans don't want to change a thing. They just want to spruce up the graphics, add a bit more content, and maybe improve the performance in a few areas.

#1 game of all time (the DS version due to the compendium storing endings to be seen any time and the arena offering early wallets for easier LLG challenges). Top 10 SNES version. OF COURSE this game DESERVES a remake, if full immersive 3-D glory!!! If you want to give us just the basic upgraded game, and then later do extra time periods/characters/storylines/etc and give them to us as a DLC, that's where you can make your extra profit. DON'T do episodic, or you may find you have no fans left, no profits to complete the final episode, and make Chrono Trigger a cursed name forever (a fate worse than Lavos!!!!).

Also, 100% TOTALLY up for a movie! This MUST be done! If not in the style of Advent Children, then I would be willing to wager a full scale live action would be dazzling, as long as the special effects are spot-on. The storyline is just too good to not make a movie.

@DeThAddR: I personally would not want them to make a movie for one SUPER HUGE reason. The game has WAY WAY too much content and stuff in it to cover in an average length movie, unless the movie is going to be a minimum of like 4 hours long or more. Do you HONESTLY believe they could ever make a good movie based on the game with how much is in the game it self? as for a remake well, that is something i would be interested in, yet i do not think they would pull it off all that well. I will reserve judgement on that until i see how they do with the FF7 remake.

Mind you FF7 is not near the game in ANY way that Chrono Trigger is, the game is legendary. FF7 is a good game but not near the quality that Chrono Trigger is.
